Teach Your Children Well

I heard someone argue today that they were unfazed by someone's racism because that person was "under educated" and didn't know what they were saying. Racism has nothing to do with under education. You can have an Ivy League education and still hate people of color. What do you think they taught the white colonial children about the new worlds? A place of viscous beasts and uncharted terrain. A place where only the most savage of our species could thrive. The people there were beasts, just like the exotic creatures in the rainforests or the predators in the deserts. The literal birth place of systemic racism and xenophobia. Under-educated and racist are not synonyms.

My vote was for me... and so many more people like me, people different from me, different from you... As a gay man, I feel a need for protection that I've never felt before. It's weird; I don't feel unsafe physically... spiritually? Fundamentally?? My vote is for my grandmother who I miss dearly. She taught me to use my voice and to always stand up for those who can not stand for themselves. My vote is for my grandfather who taught me about integrity and humility and compassion. My vote is for mother who taught me to respect all people and that "silence is violence". My vote is for my father who taught me that I should always treat people the way I want to be treated. My vote is to support my brothers and my sisters because they ALWAYS support me. My vote is for my nieces and nephews who are just as lucky as I am to have been blessed with the "village" we call family but also for the children of our global village who are not as fortunate as we are. My vote is for you and it is for me but it is also for Susan b, Martin and Malcolm, Harriet, Rosa, Dante and Dontre, Trayvon and Tanisha. This land is your land and this land is my land. Before we are Americans we are all humans. Borders are invisible lines and justice is indivisible by all. Walls should only be in homes and every citizen should feel safe no matter their race, color, creed, sexuality, gender identity, or political affiliation. Women's rights are human rights and human rights are women's rights. My rights are your rights and your rights are my rights. EVERYONE deserves basic human decency.
