svengdao:
A wave of chilling cold trickled from the top of her head, down her spine. It wasn’t due to any spiritual influence, but rather the immense pain she felt just from the sight of him. Seeing his tears well up was the initial trigger. The sense of helplessness and regret that followed in both his words and body language saturated the feeling. Her need to leap over the board and pull him into a comforting embrace was all too strong. Yet, she knew her fingers needed to remain in place in order to ensure nothing went wrong throughout this process. Her teeth sunk down into her lower lip as she forced herself to remain seated. She thought, perhaps, another form of divination may have been better, given the way he was responding. As they were now, the spirit they were in contact with could only give limited answers when asked a question. “Taejoon…” she whispered carefully, as if afraid her words may cause him further harm. While she didn’t want to rush him, or force her friend to do anything he was not yet comfortable with, she felt it pertinent that she ensure he knew what exactly was happening. “I cant.. I can’t tell you what she’s saying. Not through this.” Sae began to frown, a disheartened expression settling onto her soft features. “Tae, is there anything you want to ask her?”
Chaotic was the only way to describe what was happening throughout his being, his mind swimming with all sorts of questions and commands while emotions ran rampant; from the sorrow towards the situation -- to the outright anger he pinned on himself. All the blame he took wholeheartedly due to believing he was indeed at fault, and the reason for her passing. Taejoon was becoming breathless as the seconds flew by, making it a lot harder for his cries to be heard, and slowly, but surely, they no longer were. “....I” He started in the midst of composing himself, now lifting a shoulder to slide his wet features against the fabric that clothed it, unable to control the series of sniffles that followed. “I don’t know if I can....” Words distanced themselves from him as the heavy fog began to diminish within his mind, finally giving him a chance to carefully dissect the happenings around him. More seconds passed. And the more calm he became.
As he glanced down at the board, catching the final moments of his hands trembling above the planchette, he took in a deep breath while his lids flitted to a close. “This is hard--” His voice had returned, the fatigue caused by his cries still noticeable, but his depth was now prominent once again. “Sorry you had to see that, ma’. It’s been a while since I cried in front of you, last time was probably when dad passed away, huh?” He coughed out a small, inaudible laugh, lifting his lashes to regain his vision. “Anyway, uhh....I only have one question, mum.” For some reason his gaze gravitated to the empty space beside him, brows furrowing as he rode out the silence a little longer. “When I talk to you at night, can you hear me?”

The smell of burnt sage still lingered in the stagnant air of her bedroom. On the floor, were two circles: one of salt, and one of symbols written in chalk for protection. Sae had done everything she could to ensure her friend that they would be safe during the reading. It wasn’t odd to her that he was so weary – if not terrified – of the thought of speaking to spirits. There was so much stigma that surrounded Ouija boards. She blamed Hollywood for demonizing the sleek black board that laid between them.
With everything having been set in place, the wiccan called upon a spirit in particular: Taejoon’s mother. She kept her eyes focused on their hands, one resting over top the edges of the planchette, lightly, in order to allow the small wooden disk to move across the board with as little friction as possible. It took a few moments, but she felt the tool shift, inching slowly towards the corner of the board marked with a cursive ‘Yes’. Her eyes shot up towards him, brows knitting together to try and maintain a stern expression as he fought back an excited smile. “Are you doing that?”
“It wasn’t me, I swear!”
Her lips pursed at his response, gaze drifting down to the planchette that was now directly over the confirmation of their first question. “Well…” Hiding her enthusiasm was growing difficult. She wanted so badly for him to get some sense of closure, an answer, anything to perhaps comfort him in some way in regards to losing his mother. Lowering her soft voice further, Sae nodded towards their hands. “She’s here. Ask what you need to.”
Despite the constant reassurance given by his friend, he just couldn’t seem to shake the tension latching onto his entirety. If there was ever something Taejoon swore he would never do? This was it. However, after the loss he suffered, he gradually sensed he was becoming less and less himself, and in turn, he grew more willing out of desperation.
Dark chocolate hues remained alert, watching everything before him play out step-by-step, often throwing the younger questioning glances, as if silently asking her if this was okay-- though that quickly slipped his mind at the movement performed against the tips of his digits, causing his gaze to burn into the board between them with an initial sense of disbelief. “....Mmmm-- don’t play with me, Sae.... Don’t-- ” His words struggled to fall away from his now trembling lips, trembling only as his vision blurred with tears threatening to spill; he could feel her. She was there. Whatever fear he had was now nonexistent, but that only allowed space for a wave of remorse to come crashing down on him. The male’s head fell forward and dangled, making him seem almost lifeless, however the stifled sobs that began to fill the room said otherwise. “I’m sorry--” He managed to get out between cries. “I’m sorry-- I couldn’t help you--I’m sorry--” Like a broken record.
