Japandroids - Celebration Rock
Albums I've Been Late On
So I would say my music blog is still sort of running in beta, I am posting this pretty late. On Tuesdays I want to alternate between, expanding my music library and albums I've been late on. The latter is going to be a feature where I listen to albums from that I wanted to listen to, but some how didn't.
I'm bummed I didn't listen to this earlier. When I saw Japandroids over SXSW I was super into the new songs and readily awaiting the album. However, it ended up coming out when I was getting over school and getting ready for tour so it just didn't click. As ridiculous as it sounds I think brogaze is a perfect way to describe Japandroids. What with the great distortion tone, lyrics about girls, and getting fucked up.
This LP is definitely more "rocknroll "than the last, but I don't think that is necessarily a problem. "Younger Us" is my favorite because it hits hard like their older songs. Overall compared to the first album I would say this one is more refined, but less memorable. I wish more songs were like "Younger Us" and "The House That Heaven Built", but I do enjoy the hell out the album. Maybe not album of the year like I've heard, but still awesome.
tl;dr Not as many memorable songs as Post-Nothing, but still really good
Grade: B-
Standouts
Way to go America. Solid Olympic performance.
Pants Yell!
Bands You Should Check Out
So this week I'm going to try to move my blog out of beta and actually post every day. I'm starting this week off with one my favorite bands. Easily top three. I like them so much I actually think I like their name. Pants Yell! is incredibly catchy and every album is great. Nicest people too. Literally sent me tabs in high school. I think I almost cried when I heard they were breaking up. They've been the soundtrack for every lonely night and every good time for me since I was sixteen. I have so much to say about this band that I almost have nothing to say. In the future when I review older albums of mine I will go in depth, but for the time being just know this band has so much heart.
We had the privilege of being on Flea Circus on 91.7 KVRX tonight! We got to pick jams to play, got interviewed, And just had an amazing time in general! Thanks so much to Tucker Whatley for having us on his show! Here is some pics of us hanging out and our playlist of the show!
Had a ton of fun on the radio tonight!
Here's more. We had such a good time.
My friend Tucker had 3/4 of my band, Diving, on his kvrx show. We talked, spun records, and stayed up entirely too late. We had a blast.
Heat Dust
Bands You Should Check Out
Seriously one of my favorite bands right now. It's really great when some of your really good friends make music at this caliber. Heat Dust is reminiscent of fuzzed out 90s bands such as Dinosaur Jr., but they still have a recognizable sound on their own. They're on tour right now and really loud. If you're lucky enough to live in one of these cities check them out! I hope they're still playing that mcluscky cover.

SIGHTINSOUND
Bandcamp Discovery
Since this is my first I will explain. On Wednesdays I pick three random albums from bandcamp and post my favorite. Pretty simple.
SIGHTINSOUND combines genres in the best way. Not in the way where it's like, "We're a ska band that combines the raw power of rap rock and trumpet. Also we do classic rock covers." I was super pumped to see they played their EP release show with my two favorite bands from New Orleans, Heat Dust and Glish"
Verdict: Download it!

Why - Oaklandazulasylum
Expanding My Music Library
Every other week I'm going to review an album I haven't heard from a random artist in my library. Anyways here I go. I have an odd relationship with Why?. I bought Elephant Eyelash the summer before Junior year of high school and had a really hard time getting into it. I then took a trip to Chicago that Thanksgiving and gave it another listen on the plane. Then it clicked and they became one of my favorite bands. Unfortunately, some friends at the time really burned them out on me, but they're still up there for me.
This album seemed like an experiment of sorts for Yoni. You can really hear the songs that work not only for the listener, but for him as well. This is apparent because some of the songs that fall flat do not really sound like anything off Elephant Eyelash or beyond. I like this album, but it doesn't have have a sense of consistency. The songs I like I really like, but the songs I don't are kind of annoying. I really enjoy the songs with organ and guitar. I love the tone of the organ on "Afterschool America" and "Early Whitney" reminds me of my favorite songs from Elephant Eyelash. Basically it's a really neat listen if you're into Why?.
Grade: C
Standouts
Afterschool America
Early Whitney
Seventeen
tl;dr: Cool album if you're into Why?
One of my favorite shows since forever
Father Figure
Bands You Should Check Out
When I first met Tommy he was playing drums in a band called ZWOUNDS and he blew me away. When I first met Parker and Miles their band Two Knights blew me away. Tommy, Parker, and Miles are Father Figure which continues to blow me away. Father Figure plays fast, loud, self deprecating emotional jams that break away from the standard octave chord style of other bands within the genre. They are some of my favorite people I have met playing music. You can stream/download their latest release via bandcamp at the bottom of the post. Dreams, Dad Libs, and Slideshow are must listens!
&amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;img id="__mce_tmp" /&amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;span id="mce_marker" data-mce-type="bookmark"&amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/span&amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;span id="__caret"&amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;_&amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/span&amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;a href="http://fatherfiguretx.bandcamp.com/album/-" data-mce-href="http://fatherfiguretx.bandcamp.com/album/-"&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;死の手 by father figure&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;
So I've decided to start a music blog. As an ex-journalism major I actually do miss writing about things I care about. Unfortunately, going to school for it left a bad taste in my mouth and for about two years I decided I was sick of writing anything. Things have changed and I've also realized I have not kept up with music lately. So here I am probably writing a music blog for myself and I'm perfectly fine with that. If you do end up reading it here is what the schedule will look like.
Monday: Bands You Should Check Out
Tuesday: Filling Out My Music Library/Albums I Missed Out On
Wednesday: Bandcamp Discovery
Thursday: Recommendations
Friday: New Music
Saturday: Songs I Shazam
Sunday: Review an Old Album
In between these posts there will definitely be posts related to things I think are funny, hockey, video games, movies, biology, history, other things pertaining to music, and other things I like in general.
