Lower Thirds Animation
Some lower thirds were needed so I quickly created some using a cloner and keyframing it stretching. To animate the text, I used the a plain effector with linear field and an alpha material to toggle the visibility of the letters. The transparency was done inside After Effects using the colour range tool so I wouldn’t need to rerender the animation each time.
Brand Launch Animation-Title Sequence Animation
After I was happy with the lighting settings, I kept refining it and this is the final result!
Brand Launch Animation-Title Sequence
This was the first time I actually really used lighting in Cinema4D, so I took my time playing around in each tab of the settings and kept referring back to the live-action footage which was a great reference. First I lowered the intensity and adjusted the shape of the spotlights so the lights diffused more softly into the background. I increased the radius and added a physically accurate falloff, I then got rid of that unnatural sharp tip of the light source by adding a near clip to add a dome to the top of the lights like it came from a real spotlight. Inside the visibility tab, I just experimented with the different settings, always referring back to the footage for reference until I got something similar. I noticed that in the lights there was dust floating, to recreate this in my lights I added some noise as soft turbulence, increased the scale and played around with the other settings.
Some other feedback I received was that the models didn’t look like they belonged in their environment. This was because I textured the graphic devices with the luminance channel that does not respond to lighting. To correct this, I added reflectance with two layers so it reflects the light in the scene.

The lights placement got the shadows the way I wanted but I got feedback that the spotlights themselves were not realistic and looked very ‘3D’ (fake) which I didn’t want. So next I played around with the light settings.

After the animation was approved, I got to work on the polished version, which was a huge challenge. Out of all the aspects of motion graphics, lighting is the area I struggle with the most. If you look at my style experiments, my style is very 2D and flat, I pretty much only use the luminance channel or area lighting with ambient illumination with minimal hard shading, so I am very inexperienced when it comes to realistic lighting. The client wanted the animation to have similar lighting and shadows to footage, so I ran a few tests on how to achieve the shadows first and where to place the lights to get the four shadows on the floor.

Initial draft Clients liked using spotlight idea so I put together a rough draft of the animation with the footage and logo animation (not created by me). I created a new graphic device animation to set up a transition to the titles and a background animation that opens up to the footage, I also created the text animation. Inside AfterEffects, I added the logo animation and masked off the graphic device animation so it did not show the logo underneath.
Brand Launch Animation-Title Sequence
I was tasked with coming up with a small title sequence for the brand launch video. I showed some early tests and created a new one using my graphic devices animation and spotlight.
Animation Assets Using the same technique I used before with the matrix, clonera and emitter, I created another particle animation. This time the particles followed a spline as a path and used the twist deformer to spin as they moved.
Animation Assets I used an earlier animation I made (Live Project cloud shockwave) to create this small animation for the brand’s promo.
Animation Assets- Speech Bubble
I created a speech bubble using a cloner with the Metaball with a random effector using noise that gently moves the bubble.
Animation Assets-Particle Animation
I needed to create an animation that moved like when you talk on a cold winter day. To create this, I combined a emitter, cloner and matrix together so that I could use the mograph tools as well as the dynamic forces. I used Plain effectors to have the particles grow in and shrink out, and Wind and Turbulence forces to have the particles blow about on the screen as if they are weightless.
