The Days Of Disco

“Love Is On The Way” by The Sweet Inspirations

This record means the world to me because of the memory attached to it! It was the Winter of 1979 and Alex Cuevas and I were the disco queens of The Lucero Ward in Salt Lake City Utah!

Although we were queer and did not fit in religiously, we were loved by many there! We were very well known for our classy disco record collections. Joselito and Alex were the ones to bring the music to almost all of our “Mormon Dances”! Everyone wanted to dance with us!

An outing of fun and Winter excitement had been planned for the youth and everyone was excited about the “Tubing” activity in the Utah mountains. I, being from Texas had never heard of such a thing but was very looking forward to it.

We piled into all the cars all bundled up, cozy and ready to go. Alex had a teal green old ford truck that was perfect for the trip into the mountains. He signaled for me to sit in the front seat with him. He pulls out a freshly made cassette, rattles it and whispers to me “ You’re gonna love it”!

As we make our way into the mountains the scenery was breathtaking! The winding road and the bare tree branches were covered with snow was as if we were driving through a Winter Wonderland!

Alex pulls out the cassette from his coat pocket and into the tape deck it goes. He makes sure the volume is up and in an instant it all comes together just like a movie! The intro instrumentation was unbelievable. As the road curved to the right the swells of the violins unfolded and we were well into our Disco Wonder Land Journey!

Then came the most beautiful vocals I had ever heard. “ You’re in distress, sending out an S.O.S., Oh... I’m just what you need, baby I'm the key to your happiness”! Alex made eye contact with me, smiling knowing that I would not only approve of his new record but that I would love it.

By the time the disco break and the bursting slow bubbles come in we are all dancing, snapping and laughing and shouting play it again!

LOVE IS ONE THE WAY...HOLD ON LOVE IS ONE THE...BABY THIS IS THE DAY THAT LOVE CARRIES US AWAY!

My friend Alex is still very precious to me. He is no longer with us but he is in my heart where I need him most!

The Pink Disco-Hussies and The Queer-Queen From San Francisco dropped in and jammed with Child In The City at Therapy last night! This picture is actually outside on the street! The wigs were flying and the queens not only twisted the night away, but they "Monster Mashed"!! Something about those rockin' oldies! As the night progressed we got into some serious disco grooves! There was no top 40 disco last night. The disco session of the night included The Stylistics, Sweet Inspirations, First Choice, Loleatta Holloway, The Salsoul Orchestra, and Taana Gardner. I'm pleased to make many new friends. The night is building and there's no stopping us now! ............................Child In The City! I need a sign posted above me. NO RHIANNA OR BEYONCE TONIGHT! Can someone make that for me?

Last night was amazing at The Therapy Lounge in Seattle. I played 45's and lp cuts for the soulful hearts! The haunting sounds of Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds"...echoed through the streets of Capitol Hill and lured those seeking more of that good stuff! Some beautiful man walked up to me and said..."YOU ARE PLAYING THE RADIO STATION OF MY HEART! I played my favorite new find "Love On A Two Way Street" by The Moments and I was shocked but something told me to play Freddy Fender's "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights! It rocked the house! As this night grows it gets better. There are those that only want to hear what they know and then there are those that are open to the beautiful sounds of good music period!.......Keep playing it and discovering it! dj Child In The City!

This record is Fabulous! I found it yesterday for .50 cents! I was in shock for about 3 minutes! I walked around the record store not believing my treasure! I knew this song by Stacey Lattisaw first in the early 80′s. She rocks it! Lezli Valentine sang it first and then these guys “The Moments” 1968 according to Wikipedia! I love it and can’ t wait to find all the versions!.........Disco Jody!

The Hunger For Real Music

People think I am stuck in old music! I actually love new music it just has to be good. It’s out there, I just have to keep searching. I’m spinning 45′s at in The Therapy Lounge in Seattle on Wednesday’s. This is what I'm noticing about my crowd of jammers! They are hungry for “Where It Came From”! It’s amazing to watch these young kids stop in the middle of a song and recognize the hook, riff or sample. They light up and smile at me and I smile back. Last night was magical. I threw in a jam at 90 beats per minute and you would think it would kill the floor but it did the opposite. They ate it up. As far as new music is concerned Flume’s “Never Be Like You” ft Kai is still my favorite!

This is one of those records you pop on the turntable, regardless of how many pops and scratches! Only to realize you know the words to every song!
