The Mandalorian. Oil on canvas board. 50cm x 40cm.
This was seven months of pretty painstaking work and I was relieved to finish it. By having the scene brightly lit, all the details of Mandoās armour and weaponry are on full display and so there were a lot of tricky straight lines and precise shapes to capture. My next painting will largely be shrouded in darkness and shadow⦠š„µ
This was my first time painting with metallic oil paints, which I primarily used for sections of the helmet, gun, bullets and armour dents. Iām not sure if the slight metallic sheen adds anything, but the pewter and silver tones helped me achieve shades of grey without the sometimes annoying blue or brownish tints which combining white and black tones can create.
I prefer this version of Mandoās outfit with the mismatched, battle damaged armour and I wanted to capture him in a scene which reflected that damage. A hero in a moment of crisis and perhaps almost beaten. I wanted the viewer to ponder what had happened to get to this point and to wonder what might happen next⦠š«
Iām currently planning my next big painting (which hopefully takes less time) and despite my painting fatigue, Iām very much looking forward to starting it. Hereās a hint⦠š”ļøš
