No matter how often you work and live near New York City, it’ll take more than a lifetime to find the not-so-famous gems. Library Way is a street that obviously leads the way, to the lion-flanked, New York Public Library. If you don’t look down, you’ll completely miss the literary stars and their wordy wisdoms that are quite literally at your feet. And, just in case that was you, here are a few treasures…
If you’re looking for a dash of soulful voices, open your ears to a choir this season. Any season, actually. And around these parts, folks are spoiled with nearby talent. Tonight, you’d think the singers were direct from a New York Broadway show. However, they are Yale University students. Amen to the New Canaan Library for hosting this event and tickling everyone’s auditory fibers with holiday spirit.🤗❤️
Hey Google, where is your doodle to celebrate Mark Twain’s birthday? This Humorist left us with such insight, and ones we still recite today. “The secret of getting ahead is starting today,” and “if you don’t read the newspaper, you’re uninformed. The Mark Twain museum and his home are a must-see, even if you’re not into literature. His musings are just universal and full of wit and wisdom for all to savor with a smirk. “Let us live so that when we come to die even the undertaker will be sorry," and "Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits," and lots more quotes adorn the walls in this Hartford, CT attraction. It's a bit outside downtown, so you'll avoid the traffic. And a lot easier to get to than the sleepy college town in upstate New York, Elmira, where his family’s burial plot is.

What a treat last night to listen to this famous author’s back story. And learn about her current fiction novel set in the Prohibition era, titled Hang the Moon. Her memoir and connection to celebrities tended to take center stage. Jeanette Walls grew up in a dysfunctional family and swam in the swamp of parental alcohol abuse and homelessness. Her memoir, The Glass Castle, was made into a movie starring Woody Harrelson in 2017, about 12 years after the book was published. Her understanding and empathy encompass both the hardships of experiencing extreme poverty and the juxtaposition of living richly as an adult. She literally turned her rags into riches and now lives as a multi-millionaire—a handsome reward for truth diggers who dare to share their childhood with Hollywood.
Bravo, New Canaan Library, for attracting such accomplished authors and talent to this wee town, a good hour's drive from New York City.

If you are a lover of cultural and enchanting art of all kinds, tons decorate the walls, floors, and a gallery inside the CT State's Housatonic campus in Bridgeport, CT. These visual yummies remain silent. Maybe to steer clear of the prying New York museum eyes, as that’s where most of this work belongs. Take a wander around all parts of the campus with a visitor's pass from the front desk. At least stay for two hours, maybe four, to see all. Here’s a tiny taste…

This place is certainly not off the beaten path, but its operatic use tonight is quite different from the rugged boxing, ice hockey, and wrestling it typically houses. Madison Square Garden is an unusual yet perfect place to listen to the Italian Tenor Andrea Bocelli. Incredible voices need a great place to resonate. And this location is fit for the Caesar of opera! New York City's 'Colosseum' accommodates the swarm of 15,000 fans, with space for over 5,000 more. Most were Italian, including my husband and his family, so it felt like I was the only Irish girl in Rome. But his voice danced to my seat way up in the gods!
Next time, I’ll tour the facility to fully appreciate its impressive size in such a dense place as Manhattan.
Wizardry at Work.
A sense of mysticism vibrates when you walk the halls where greatness is imagined, scouted, and shot. Christ Church University in Oxford, England, is definitely worth an inside tour to see the inspiration behind bits of J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter. The campus feels wizardry. Perhaps it cast a spell on the math lecturer, Lewis Carroll, who wrote the famous book, Alice in Wonderland.
Stroll the Oxford streets and other campuses for tons more literary magic. Magdalen College is where Oscar Wilde lived up to his name and, well, went wild. Another Irish writer, C.S. Lewis, taught math there. He wrote the Chronicles of Narnia. The fantasy spread into Exeter College, where J.R.R. Tolkien taught. This English-German wrote about elves, trolls, and goblins in his books: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Oxford is enchanting and worthy of a second visit to capture more of its literary wonders.

A cruise ship’s port time to really see a city is typically nonexistent. The destination is Victoria, Canada, and time is slim to pack in some authentic culture in this tourist-like section. The highlight is the Crystal Ballroom, made famous in 1919. When King Edward VII waltzed to the wee hours, seducing the Canadian citizens with the grace of the British monarchy. Would a commoner's waltz do the same? I had to try at least. And try I did. My dance buddy and I had no option but to crash the event. An advertising award show, funny enough. So, all eyes are fixed on shiny trophies and who's who in the ballroom. We started to waltz in the back in our tourist jeans and t-shirts, which were slightly out of place with dinner jackets and little black dresses. And quickly, the security folks directed our waltz through the doors to the outside halls. And so it appears, a baseball cap is too far removed from a royal crowd to enchant.
The fever of St. Patrick's Day 2020 never reached past 98.6°F throughout the green-chanting population. Even the rainbow kept its social distance, missing its deadline of delivering a pot of vaccine virus gold. Closing pubs and empty store shelves prompted me to well stock my home. I see that adult beverage priorities don’t exist outside the land of the green and its widespread folk in foreign lands…
I just listen to this uplifting and meditative piece composed by actor Sir Antony Hopkins. Wow, actor, composer, and a really good faux cannibal:)

Nightmare on Fort Sumter.
Dragged from your family and homestead into enslavement, abductees most likely saw this alien world first. Fort Sumter is a port city in Charleston, South Carolina. The visitor's center captures a handful of historical stories during this horrific time. The struggles, the injustice, and the triumphs to freedom will bring you to tears. But you may leave with a sense of justice that their voices are finally heard.

Converting the inside of a church into a pub must’ve set the hell fires a-light. But at least the local Palmetto Porter is heavenly chocolaty – so all might be forgiven:) It’s a neat joint to wander into if you’re visiting the touristy market area downtown in Charleston, South Carolina.

You'd pass this for just another historical grand building you can't get into. But this former town hall is open to the public. This exquisite law-chamber interior makes you feel like a British Barrister ready to put on their wig and gown. It's worth a pop in for a few minutes while on lunch if you're near the corner of Main Street and Atlantic Avenue, across from Dunkin Donuts in downtown Stamford, CT.
