Hey, my name is Josh and I play bass in a German emo punk band called Burke and co-manage the label Whole Records. How are you?
Hej, nazywam się Josh i gram na basie w niemieckiej emo punkowej kapeli Burke. Jak się masz?
I’m fine, thank you very much! So about Burke…how did it all start? Where did the name come from?
Wszystko ok, dziękuje bardzo! Więc, jeśli chodzi o Burke…jak to się wszystko zaczęło? I skąd taka nazwa?
The first Burke song, entitled "The Nights We Won’t Forget", was written and recorded on one evening back in 2013 by the four other band members, Sebastian, Matze, Felix and Fabian. It was just for fun. By that time no one planned to release it. They sent it to me and I liked it. When the five of us were driving to a show one year later the song was playing on Sebastians iPod by coincidence and we then spontaneously decided to upload the song on YouTube and “start a band”. Still just for fun. The band name originates from our drummer who’s last name is Brück. We wanted something that sounds similar to his last name and Burke sounded good. And kind of funny. So we released the song and our friends, our parents and even people we didn’t know liked it. That’s why we took the next step and made Burke a “real” band. A band that writes more songs than just one and goes on tour, instead of only being a fun project that no one takes seriously. It’s still mainly about having fun of course.
Pierwsza piosenka Burke zatytułowana “The Night We Won’t Forget” została napisana i nagrana pewnego wieczora 2013 roku przez pozostałą czwórkę członków ( Sebastian, Matze, Felix and Fabian ). To była po prostu zabawa. Wtedy nikt nie planował tego nigdzie wypuszczać. Po prostu mi to podesłali, i spodobało mi się. Gdy nasza piątka jechała samochodem na jakiś koncert rok później, piosenka ta przypadkowo poleciała z iPoda Sebastiana i spontanicznie zdecydowaliśmy się na umieszczenie jej w internecie i założyć zespół. Wciąż dla zabawy. Nazwa zespołu wzięła się od nazwiska naszego perkusisty ( Brück ). Chcieliśmy czegoś, co brzmi podobnie i Burke wydawało się spoko. I dość zabawnie. Więc, wypuściliśmy ten numer i nasi znajomi, rodzice, a nawet nieznajome osoby go polubiły. Postanowiliśmy więc pójść krok dalej i zacząć grać, pisać kawałki i jeździć w traski, zajęliśmy się tym trochę poważniej. Ale to wciąż świetna zabawa.
How would you descibe your influences and your sound?
Jak opisałbyś Wasze inspiracje i brzmienie?
We just try to write catchy music that we also would listen to. People told us that we sound like bands such as Basement, Real Friends or Title Fight, so those might be an influence. What I can say regarding sound is that my dad has never liked any band I played in but he is really digging Burke.
Po prostu próbujemy pisać chwytliwą muzykę, której sami chcielibyśmy słuchać. Ludzie porównują nas do kapel takich jak Basement, Real Friends czy Title Fight, więc coś w tym musi być. Co do brzmienia powiem tylko, że mój ojciec nigdy nie lubił żadnej kapeli w której grałem, ale Burke bardzo mu się podoba.

Haha, I take that as a compliment! Whole Records is a label Sebastian and I “founded” in January 2015. The Burke/Two Minutes Union split 7" will be our first release on vinyl. We’re really stoked about that.
Haha, biorę to jako komplement! Whole Records to wytwórnia którą z Sebastianem założliśmy w styczniu 2015. Split Burke/Two Minutes Union będzie naszym pierwszym winylowym wydawnictwem, bardzo się jaramy!
Yeah man, I was actually about to ask - your first release was a acoustic EP right? Why did you decide to debut this way?
Tak, właśnie miałem zacząć ten temat - Waszym pierwszym wydawnictwem była akustyczna EPka, prawda? Dlaczego zdecydowaliście się zadebiutować w taki sposób?
Yeah, from Burke as well. We wanted to release something before our first show in February and that was the easiest and cheapest way.Hard work though.
Tak, zarówno pierwsze wydawnictwo Burke jak i Whole Rec. Chcieliśmy wydać coś przed naszym pierwszym koncertem w lutym, a to był najprostszy i najtańszy sposób. Wciąż jednak było przy tym dużo roboty.
Haha ok, so now about the split. Tell us about the recording/creative process? I heard that Mat Kerekes of Citizen mastered it?!
Haha ok, więc teraz o splicie. Opowiedz o procesie tworzenia i nagrywania. Słyszałem, że masterem zajął się Mat Kerekes z Citizena?
Our guitarist Felix recorded everything either in our rehearsal room, my parent’s basement or the local youth centre and mixed it afterwards. Apart from the deadline we set for ourselves we had exactly the freedom and space we needed. Mat then mastered the songs. I just wrote him an e-mail because I once read that he is offering recording, mixing and mastering services and he was really nice. We have never met though.
Nasz gitarzysta Felix nagrał wszystko na naszej salce, w piwnicy moich rodziców oraz lokalnym centrum młodzieżowym, później sam to zmixował. Oprócz limitu czasowego, który sami sobie narzuciliśmy, mieliśmy całkowitą wolność, której potrzebowaliśmy. Następnie Mat zmasterował piosenki. Po prostu napisałem do niego e-mail, bo kiedyś widziałem, że oferuje usługi nagrywania/mixu/masteru. Był bardzo miły. Niestety nigdy się nie spotkaliśmy.

Nieźle! Na koniec - opowiedz o teledysku do “Turtle Fight”!
We couldn’t find any Turtles that were willing to fight so we picked up some friends, glitter and soap bubbles and went to a forest. The video doesn’t have any proper meaning but we had lots of fun shooting it. We didn’t want it to be breathtaking or to have a deep meaning. We just hope that people google “Burke shows nearby” with a smile on their face after watching the video haha.
Nie mogliśmy znaleźć żadnych żółwi chętnych do walki, wzięliśmy więc kilku kolegów, brokat i mydlane bańki a następnie poszliśmy do lasu. Wideo nie niesie żadnego przesłania, ale przy kręceniu świetnie się bawiliśmy. Nie chcieliśmy niczego poruszającego lub głębokiego. Chcemy po prostu, by ludzie googlowali o naszych koncertach z uśmiechem na twarzy po obejrzeniu teledysku haha.
