Hi! I’m Kuba. I’m the bassist and vocalist of Stay Nowhere :)

Zadebiutowaliście demem w 2016 roku, trochę osób się zajarało ale nagle cisza...co się z Wami działo?

You debuted with your demo in 2016, lots of people dug it and all of a sudden there was no trace left of you… What happened to you guys?

Dobre pytanie. Wypuściliśmy demo do sieci i w tym samym okresie opuścił nas ówczesny perkusista - Przemek. Wyjechał na drugi koniec Polski. Od tego czasu spotykaliśmy się w miarę regularnie z Emilem - gitarzystą i robiliśmy materiał na LP w zasadzie jeszcze o tym  nie wiedząc. W między czasie rozglądaliśmy się za nowym perkusistą, ale w Krakowie niezwykle o to ciężko. Teraz jest z nami Hubert, który dołączył w styczniu 2017 i na razie nie zapowiadał żadnej ucieczki.

Good question. We uploaded the demo and at the same time Przemek – our previous drummer had left the band. He moved to the other end of Poland. I kept meeting regularly with Emil – the guitarist ever since and we kept working on the new album basically not knowing the songs will end up on an LP Album. In the meantime, we were looking for a drummer but it’s unimaginably hard to find one in Krakow. Currently Hubert is playing drums and so far so good he hasn’t announced any escape plans.

I think that not only in Krakow there’s a shortage of drummers :( Let’s move back in time and talk about the beginning of the band and what influenced you when writing your first songs.

Tak, często słyszę i to od ludzi z różnych regionów Polski. Gitarzystów zawsze nadwyżka. Stay Nowhere powstało gdzieś początkiem 2014 roku. Tuż po moim i Emila powrocie z zagranicy. Emil siedział jakiś czas w Dubline, ja w Szwajcarii i prowadziliśmy niekończące się rozmowy na skypie o tym jak chcemy grać, brzmieć o czym będą teksty itd. i tak mniej więcej w podobnym okresie wróciliśmy do Polski założyliśmy projekt - nieformalnie bo nie mieliśmy nazwy, ale pomysły nam się wysypywały jeden po drugim. Numery powstawały w zasadzie w takiej kolejności jakiej lecą od początku dema. Undefined był pierwszy. Tu ciekawostka: nie mieliśmy sali więc nagrywaliśmy wszystko w domu. Szczególnie trudno było nagrywać moje dość głośne ryczące wokale więc zawijałem się kołdrą, i wchodziłem do szafy z mikrofonem. Takie były początki. Tyle determinacji.

Yeah, I hear it very often from people in different parts of the country. In case of guitarists there’s always a surplus. Stay Nowhere was established early 2014 shortly after we came back from abroad. Emil was in Ireland, I was in Switzerland and we were having endless conversations on Skype, about how is the band going to sound, what the lyrics will be relating to and etc. This is how more or less we have started this project – informally at the time as we still didn’t have the name for it, but ideas were just pouring out one after another. The songs were basically made in the same order as on our Demo. Undefined was first. He’s an interesting thing: we didn’t have a practice room so we would record everything at home. It was particularly difficult to record my loud, roaring vocals, so I would wrap myself with a quilt and hide in a wardrobe with a microphone. That’s how we started. So determined.

Haha historia z kołdrą jest świetna! To co z tymi inspiracjami? Ja słyszę tu wczesne Superheaven i Basement plus kapele z lat 90tych jak Seaweed i trochę może Dinosaur Jr (to może być złudzenie wywołane Waszym pięknym Jazzmasterem!), ale bardziej ciekawi mnie czym wy się jaracie i co chcieliście przemycić do Waszego grania :)

Haha that story with the quilt is hilarious! What about the influences? I can hear early Superheaven, Basement plus some 90’ bands like Seaweed and somewhat Dinosaur Jr (this one may however, be caused by the presence of your beautiful Jazzmaster!) but moreover what interests me the most is what you guys are into and what did you want to smuggle to your music:)

Na pewno mam jeszcze wiele takich historii. Musiałbym sięgnąć pamięcią, ale nie wiem czy chciałbym do tego wracać. Mało komfortowe było nagrywanie w tamtym czasie. Teraz mamy swoją przestrzeń na obrzeżach Krakowa. Nagrywamy się praktycznie sami i kiedy chcemy. Ale mniejsza z tym. Dzięki za super odniesienia! Szczerze mówiąc najwięcej muzyki słuchałem w przerwach między zespołami stąd ciężko bezpośrednio określić jakie zespoły były dla nas największą inspiracją. Z pewnością lata 90. Seaweed, Jawbreaker, Dinosaur Jr, Archers of Loaf, Samiam, Knapsack, Mineral, Failure, Helmet, Quicksand, Starflyer 59, Swervedriver czy bardziej współczesne, ale wciąż nawiązujące do tamtych czasów Dilly Dally, Drug Church, Swain, Ringo Deathstarr, Narrow Head i wiele innych, które w tym momencie nie przychodzą mi do głowy! Jak zdążyłeś zapewne zauważyć, teksty są raczej emocjalne, także wpływ na to w jakim kierunku pójdzie kolejny tekst ma wiele czynników. Warto wspomnieć, że moim pierwszym “idolem” wokalnym był Scott Freeman z Shook Ones.

I definitely have a lot of similar stories to this one. I’d have to think back but I’m not sure if it’s something I’d want to get back to. Recording at that time was very uncomfortable. Nowadays, we have our own space in the outskirts of Krakow. We record new songs literally on our own whenever we want to. Anyways, thanks for these superb references! Honestly speaking, I used to listen to plenty of music in between bands therefore It’s hard to directly determine which bands influenced us the most. Most certainly the 90’. Seaweed, Jawbreaker, Forgetters, Dinosaur Jr, Archers of Loaf, Samiam, Failure, Helmet, Quicksand, Starflyer 59, Swervedriver also more contemporary but still relating to those times: Dilly Dally, Drug Church, Swain, Ringo Deathstarr, Narrow Head and many other which I don’t recall at the moment! As you may have already noticed, the lyrics are rather emotional so there’s multiple factors that decide where the next song will take us. It’s worth mentioning, that my first vocal “idol” was Scott Freeman from Shook ones. 

Da się zauważyć! Aż odpale sobie “So Grown Up”! Ok, to skoro mamy zarysowaną historie zespołu i porozmawialiśmy o inspiracjach, to teraz Wasze bardzo ciepło przyjęte LP! Dotarły do mnie jakieś plotki, że nawiązaliście współpracę wydawniczą z legendą naszej sceny - Anteną Krzyku! Parę słów o tym?

It’s noticeable! I’m going to turn on „so grown up” right now! Okay, as we discussed the bands history and we talked about your influences, let’s move to your warmly welcomed LP! I’ve been hearing that you’re working together with the legendary record label – Antena Krzyku. Say a few words on that.

Przede wszystkim nie spodziewałem się takiego obrotu sytuacji! Myślę, że Stay Nowhere zgodziliby się ze mną, że zdjęcie z nas części współczesnych obowiązków zespołów to ogromna ulga. To chyba jedna z naszych największych zmor, zajmowanie się czymkolwiek wykraczającym poza pisanie i nagrywanie numerów. Antena Krzyku to oczywiście legenda i osobiście czuję się zaszczycony należąc do rodziny tylu zasłużonych zespołów. Nasz LP w fizycznej formie pojawi się w Styczniu 2018, ale to jeszcze nie koniec. Korzystając z okazji, pozwolę sobie zdradzić, że mamy już w planie wypuścić jeszcze singla w najbliższym czasie.

First and foremost, I would have never expected things to go this way! Personally speaking (and I think that Stay Nowhere would agree with me on this), taking off a significant part of responsibilities of today’s bands is a great relief. It’s one of our greatest nightmare having to take on work that goes beyond writing and recording songs. Antena Krzyku is indeed a legendary record label and I personally feel privileged to belong to this family of many outstanding bands. Our LP will be available in January 2018 on vinyl but that’s not all. I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you that we’re planning to release a 2-track single early next year.

Po pierwsze - gratuluje! Muza na zagranicznym poziomie dostaje iście zagraniczne wydanie haha! Powiesz coś więcej o tym singlu? Też fizycznie? Skoro lata 90te, to wracamy też do singli 7” ?

First of all, congratulations! Your music is reminiscent of bands from abroad and deserves the same level of promotion, so maybe a 7″ ? 

Taaaak. Zdecydowanie 7”. Szczegółów jeszcze nie omawialiśmy. Nagrywanie zaczniemy pewnie z początkiem kolejnego roku. Na 7” wrzucimy dwa delikatnie kontrastujące ze sobą numery. Oba w podobnym nurcie, ale zawsze staram się nagrać coś nowego (przynajmniej wokalnie) czego wcześniej jeszcze nie było.

Yesssssss, definitely 7”. We haven’t discussed the details yet. Most probably we will start recording early next year. The 7” will include 2 songs slightly contrasting with one another. Both will have the same vibe with something new that wasn’t there before (at least vocally).

Czekam z niecierpliwością! To jakie Stay Nowhere ma teraz plany (oprócz wspomnianego singla)? LP już jest, to trasa by się przydała!

I’m looking forward to it! What are the plans for Stay Nowhere in the nearest future? (apart from the release of the 7” single) LP is on its way, time for a tour!

Zgadzam się z Tobą! Niestety więcej niż 3 dniowa trasa nie wchodzi w grę ze względu na typowo życiowe obowiązki. Z koncertami ruszymy na przełomie Listopada i Grudnia. Na chwile obecna oficjalnie gramy z Astrid Lindgren i Bulbulators w Warszawie 2 grudnia! W między czasie Emil wyprowadza się do Warszawy także odpadną nam próby do czasu aż się chłopak ogarnie.

I agree! Sadly, a tour for more than 3 days is not an option at the moment due to typical life/family responsibilities. We will kick off with shows at around the end of November, beginning of December. For the time being, we are officially playing a gig in Warsaw on December 2. In the meantime Emil is moving to Warsaw so we’ll have a little shortage of band practices until he gets his act together.

Mam nadzieje, że uda się wspólnie coś zagrać! Tymczasem na koniec mam jeszcze jedno pytanie - dlaczego “only silence is real”?

I hope one day we’ll have the chance to gig together! Meanwhile, I’d like to sum it up with one more question. Why “only silence is real”?

[ENG] Hi Nick, how's the reception of your new single "Jet" so far? I personally love it!

[PL] Cześć Nick, jak z odbiorem Waszego nowego singla “Jet”? Osobiście bardzo mi się podoba!

Thanks! It's been really great and overwhelmingly positive. That was absolutely the song we wanted people to hear first after such a dark LP having come before it.

Dzięki! Odbiór jak na razie jest niesamowicie pozytywny. To był zdecydowanie numer, który chcieliśmy pokazać ludziom jako pierwszy po tak mrocznym poprzednim albumie.

You're coming to Europe for a short tour in early October, why did you decide to play here exactly on the day of release of the new album?

Przyjeżdżacie do Europy na kilka koncertów na początku października, dlaczego zdecydowaliście się na granie tutaj w dniu premiery nadchodzącej płyty?

I wish there was some sort of intention behind it, but honestly it just so worked out that way and we thought it was cool. I like the idea of celebrating the release in another country. I'm hoping we can think of something cool to do on release day.

Chciałbym móc powiedzieć, że stoi za tym jakiś plan, ale szczerze mówiąc - po prostu tak wyszło i pomyśleliśmy, że to fajny pomysł. Podoba mi się myśl o świętowaniu wydania nowej płyty za granicą. Mam nadzieję, że uda się zrobić coś fajnego w dzień premiery.

The tour poster you’ve made is awesome, is there any particular reason you went for George Harrison apart from him being part of The Beatles?

Plakat trasy który wykonałeś jest świetny, czy jest jakiś szczególny powód, dla którego zdecydowałeś się na Georga Harrisona oprócz tego, że należał do The Beatles?

Yes! George is the best Beatle with the best solo record of them all. I just wanted to pay some sort of tribute to him. I've been doing a bit of a series of different visual interpretations of important figures to me. George Harrison, Gil Scott Heron, Martin Margiela and Mina just to name a few.

Tak! George to najlepszy Beatles i z całego zespołu nagrał najlepszą płytę solową. Chciałem po prostu złożyć mu hołd. Pracowałem nad serią interpretacji wizualnych ważnych dla mnie osób. George Harrison, Gil Scott Heron, Martin Margiela i Mina to kilka z nich.

Can you tell us about the process of writing/recording "As You Please"? Was it any different from working on your previous records?

Czy mógłbyś opowiedzieć o procesie pisania/nagrywania “As You Please”? Czy w jakiś sposób różnił się on od poprzednich?

It was mostly the same. We started with demos and brought them to their full fruition with Will Yip. The biggest difference this time is that we were more prepared than usual and I think you can hear that.

Z grubsza było tak samo. Zaczęliśmy od dem nad rozwinięciem których pracowaliśmy z Willem Yipem. Największą różnicą jest to, że tym razem byliśmy o wiele bardziej przygotowani niż w przeszłości, i chyba to słychać.

What’s your favorite song off the new record?

Która z nowych piosenek jest Twoją ulubioną?

Discrete Routine is perhaps the best Citizen song yet! Hope people like it.

INTERVIEW: Przemysław Głowacki ( Marksman )

Hej! Dla formalności - przedstaw się i opowiedz kilka słów o Marksmanie!

Już się przedstawiałem u Ciebie! Zasadniczo jestem Przemek, gram na bębnach w zespole Marksman, który swoje początki datuje na rok 2011. Przez ten czas nagraliśmy dwie demówki, LP “Awaken”, które ukazało się na winylu, a w tym momencie dokładnie jesteśmy dzień przed premierą nowego EP zatytułowanego “Hawok”.

Nasza ostatnia rozmowa miała miejsce tuż przed premierą “Awaken”, prawda? Pomimo, że podczas wywiadu Marcin był już na pokładzie, to jednak “Hawok” jest jego nagrywkowym debiutem, jak ta zmiana wpłynęła na brzmienie Marksmana?

Dokładnie. Marcin dołączył do nas latem 2014 roku chwilę przed premierą płyty na winylu, stąd we wkładce widnieje jako członek zespołu już, mimo, że nie nagrywał płyty de facto. Na koncertach z Marcinem przez pewien okres graliśmy jedną nową piosenkę, ale ostatecznie nie znalazła się ona na EP, stąd tak - Hawok to generalnie debiut z Marcinem. Praca z nim to zupełnie nowa jakość dla zespołu, wniósł wszystko to czego temu zespołowi brakowało. Daliśmy sobie bardzo dużo czasu wszyscy na zrobienie tego materiału i nigdzie się nie spieszyliśmy. Doszło do tego, że w 2016 roku nie zagraliśmy żadnego koncertu tylko siedzieliśmy w sali i spotykając się co tydzień robiliśmy numery. W międzyczasie zrobiliśmy nawet trzymiesięczną przerwę. Ciężko mi powiedzieć obiektywnie jak ta zmiana wpłynęła na zespół, ale jeśli chodzi o mnie to zaproszenie Marcina to była najlepsza rzecz jaka mogła nam się wtedy przydarzyć pod każdym względem.

Pozdrawiamy Marcina! Chodzą słuchy Przemek, że założyłeś label, żeby wydać Marksmana na winylu, a potem wystartowałeś z działalnością studyjną, żeby Marksmana nagrać haha a tak serio, opowiedz o nagrywaniu, jak proces powstawania tej EP różnił się od “Awaken” od strony techniczno/nagrywkowej?

Z tym założeniem labela to taki żart trochę, bo tak naprawdę miałem wydawcę (pozdrawiam Filip), który wtedy mógł wejść tylko w połowę nakładu jeśli chodzi o koszta wydania LP. Problem był ze znalezieniem drugiego. Zniechęcony brakiem postępów wyłożyłem własne pieniądze na pokrycie kosztów, a skoro już to zrobiłem to uznałem, że zasłużyłem sobie na wymyślenie fikcyjnej wytwórni, tak powstało Tylko Jeden Winyl Records. Nie wiążę swojej przyszłości z branżą wydawniczą. To był “tylko jeden winyl”, choć nie ukrywam, że jest to myśl za jakiś czas. Ze studiem było trochę inaczej, ponieważ ten plan z kolei ma kilka lat i po miesiącach walki udało mi się uruchomić własne mobilne studio nagraniowe w zeszłym roku, głównie z myślą o Marksmanie i innych punkowych zespołach. Przez kilka lat kształciłem się na własną rękę w tym kierunku zdobywając doświadczenie przy różnych realizacjach, w pewnym momencie zdarzeniem losu udało się to marzenie zrealizować założeniem Tylko Jeden Winyl Studio.

Pierwsza rzecz różniąca te dwie sesje to nieograniczony czas tym razem - zanim zacząłem nagrywać bębny w naszej sali prób sprawdzałem różne warianty - ustawienie, wybór instrumentu, mikrofony itd. Niestety tego przy Awaken zabrakło, nie mieliśmy może ściśle wytyczonego czasu, ale istniała presja - duże studio na bębny było dostępne jeden dzień w którym musiałem się zmieścić z nagraniem wszystkiego na płytę, resztę trzeba było zrobić w niecałe trzy kolejne. Nie myślałem te 3 lata temu o tym “może spróbować czegoś innego na werblu? może inny mikrofon?” - po prostu postawiłem bębny, sprawdziliśmy czy fajnie i zacząłem wbijać. Zaufaliśmy wtedy Piotrowi, który realizował Awaken w studiu Maq Records w Wojkowicach i zdaliśmy się renomę studia i instynkt, co dziś niestety przekłada się na to, że brzmienie tej płyty to nie jest coś co by mną powalało, choć generalnie brzmi dobrze. Absolutnie nie winię za to Piotra, który również mixował i masterował nam tę EP i nie wyobrażam sobie by robił to ktokolwiek inny - winię trochę siebie, ale nie traktuję się z tego powodu jakoś surowo, bo tak po prostu wtedy było. Nie było żadnej wizji, którą dysponowałem teraz. Przy “Hawok” omówiliśmy wszystko szczegółowo na próbach - gdzie gra jaka gitara, w jaki sposób będą grały piece, jakie piece, jakich użyjemy mikrofonów itd. Już nie na żywioł, a na wyższym poziomie świadomości. Właściwie to z jakąkolwiek świadomością. Sam proces nagrywania bębnów trwał trzy dni, gitary i basy zrobiliśmy w jeden weekend, wokale w dwa kolejne dni. Ja zająłem się całą realizacją i przygotowaniem tracków, które przekazałem do Piotrka z Satanic Audio celem zmixowania. Wszystko poszło dość sprawnie bo w dwa miesiące od pierwszego werbla do otrzymania mastera.

Co do wokali - jak to się stało, że cała EPa po polsku?!

Podtrzymaliśmy pomysł z “Awaken” by jeden numer był po polsku, bo to jednak zagrało przy “Granicach”. Kuba na którejś próbie przekomarzał się, że “może całą?”. Do ostatniej chwili nie wiedzieliśmy jakie będą teksty - jeśli chodzi o wokale Kuba ma pełne zaufanie ze strony zespołu do tego jakie będą i o czym będą teksty. Dzień przed nagraniem wokali po prostu dowiedzieliśmy się, że całość jest w języku ojczystym i totalnie się na to zgrzaliśmy.

Wracając do Przemkowej wytwórni - czy nowa płyta wyjdzie fizycznie?

Na pewno wyjdzie, w jakiej formie i kiedy - to się okażę wkrótce.

Ok, na koniec chciałbym pogratulować Wam świetnego materiału i zapytać, gdzie w najbliższym czasie będzie można posłuchać Was na żywo? :)

Bardzo dziękujemy. Najbliższy koncert gramy w Warszawie 6 kwietnia z Viva Belgrado, We watch clouds oraz Escapism. To w sumie jedyny zaplanowany koncert o którym możemy powiedzieć teraz, zagramy z kolei na nim całe nowe EP i jeden stary numer.

Review: World View “Waking Up”

I always thought of the Australian scene as of a really up-to-date thing. It seems to reflect what’s going on in the States really well, but still in its own way and on a very high level. It’s no surprise then, that one of the bands I've recently been into the most is from Australia.

World View (facebook) released “Waking Up” in August via Last Ride records, but it could have been 20 years ago as well. The record has a very nostalgic feel and sound, that on one hand reminds me of 80s/90s bands like Fugazi, Rite of Spring, Turning Point or even Swervedriver, but also of modern bands like Praise, Turnstile or Title Fight (those 3 were all working with Will Yip, who also mixed&mastered “Waking Up”, so...:) )

The record consists of 5 tracks. “Neurosis” opens the record with energetic, heavy drum beat joined by a nice, groovy hardcore riff. After first few lines the song slows down a bit with some spatious notes. And here you get to notice one of the things I really appreciate on this record - a variety of sounds. The band delivers really interesting parts, there are some energetic oldschool-hardcore-like ones (some parts of “No Fool”), very melodic ones (”I wish”) and some dreamy ones with lots of chorus (check out the intro to “Haunt”!), and the best thing about it, is that pretty much every song has a little bit of everything in it.

World View managed to make some old stuff sound fresh again, and it has become a pretty rare thing recently. The amount of catchy riffs and parts that force you to sing-along on this EP is incredible, and that sums up the whole thing. I think everyone will be able to find something interesting in it. So go ahead and listen to the record, and maybe even buy a 7″ here -> Last Ride Records bigcartel.

Hello, I’m Tsutomu and I sing and play bass in And Protector. Also I do the merch design and artwork.

こんにちは！And Protectorでベースボーカルをやっているツトムです。APでは作詞作曲、あとアートワークやマーチデザインも担当しています。

Could you tell us what motivated you to start And Protector? What's the story behind the bands name? Do you play in any other bands as well?

And Protectorを始めた理由は？名前の由来は？AP以外に他のバンドはやってるの？

I used to play in a metalcore band but after we broke up, I wanted to do something new with my local friends and that ended up being the start of And Protector. We started off thinking “Wouldn’t it be interesting if we had a Title Fight-like beat with Japanese lyrics?” The band name doesn’t mean much, it’s taken from a Saints Never Surrender song called “Protector”.I play in another band called LIFEFOCUS. It’s a hardcore band and I sing. It’s got a similar sound to Cold World, Leeway and Outburst. The lyrics are all in Japanese. Also, I used to play bass in an old-school hardcore band called Potato Destroyer but we broke up. Shoutout to THE POTATO CREW!

APを始める前はメタルコアバンドをやっていたんだけどそのバンドが解散してしまって、新しくバンドを始めたいなと思って地元の友達に声を掛けて結成したのがAnd Protectorです。初期Title Fightみたいなリズムに日本人特有の世界観が乗ったら面白いかなーと思ってそれをテーマに始めました。バンド名の意味は特に無くて、たまたまBGMで流れていたSaints Never SurrenderのProtectorという曲名から引っ張ってきました。AP以外にはLIFEFOCUSというハードコアバンドでボーカルをやっています。バンドサウンドはCold WorldとかLeewayとかOutburstに影響を受けた感じ。それに日本語詞で歌乗せしてます。あとは解散してしまったけどPotato Destroyerというオールドスクールハードコアでベースを弾いていました！THE POTATO CREW！

I noticed that a lot of bands in Japan try to sing in english and despite that you sing in japanese. Why did you choose to make music in your native language?

日本のパンクバンドは英詞が多いけど、なぜ日本語で歌おうと思ったの？

It’s the most comfortable language for me. I feel that singing in a language other than your mother tongue could really set limitations to expressing your feelings. “I can’t speak English so why sing in it?” Is my stance.

一番使い慣れてる言語だから。母国語でなければ出来ない表現があるし、歌ってる時に自分の気持ちが言葉に乗るからかな。何より俺は英語が話せないからね（笑） You have a new record out called "Cold". Could you tell us a little bit about it? What's it about?

新作"Cold"が発表されたね！この作品について少し教えて！どんな内容？

We were able to find the And Protector sound with our last record “Lime Green”. So this time we explored that sound even more. The lyrics are the same as before and I sing about daily occurrences. Sound-wise, the guitars are loud as shit. (haha)

前作の"Lime Green"からAnd Protectorらしさを見出してきたんだけど、それを更に突き詰めれた作品かな。歌詞は相変わらず日常生活で思った事やボヤキを綴っていて、サウンド的にはとりあえずギターがうるさい！笑

The record seems to be very diverse, like I hear some really melodic hardcore influenced stuff as well as stuff like Dinosaur Jr. What are your biggest influences as a band?

APの音楽は色んなタイプの音楽が混ざっていると思う。メロディックでありながら、時にはDinosaur Jr.も匂わせる！APが一番影響されているバンドたちは？

Asian Kung-fu Generation, Number Girl, eastern youth are the biggest influences. If we’re talking about foreign bands, Title Fight, Dinosaur Jr., Nirvana, Pentimento, and Gnarwolves are some of the big ones.

かなり影響を受けてるのはASIAN KANG-FU GENERATION、Number Girl、eastern youthです！海外だったらTitle Fight全作品、Dinosaur Jr.、Nirvana、Pentimento、Gnarwolvesがかなり刺激を受けてる！

You had some personal changes in the band some time ago, right? Was it before or after writing "Cold"?

バンド編成が変わったって聞いたんだけど、それは"Cold"の前？

After the first EP, one of the guitarists quit, and after the release of “Lime Green” another guitarist left. For this new record, we added two new guitarists and I have to say they ripped pretty hard.

一番最初の"And Protector EP"をリリースしてからしばらくしてギターが一人抜けて、前作の"Lime Green"をリリースした直後にもう一人のギターが抜けてしまったんだよね。今回の作品から新しいギター2人を加えてレコーディングしたよ！轟音ギターが炸裂してる！

In a recent interview in "Down Time With Ken" you said that you wouldn't like to play in a band full time and that you'd rather have a regular job and let music be your hobby. I feel like such attitude is pretty rare and interesting, could you say something about that?

Down Time With Kenで 「フルタイムで音楽はやりたくない」って言ってたけど、面白い視点だと思う。それについて詳しく聞かせて！

One of the reasons why is because umm.. well we don’t want to play that many shows (haha). Not because we don’t like playing them, but because we don’t want music/shows to take over our lives. If we let it take over, I feel like someday I’ll hate playing shows.Second, I need to live a “normal” life away from music to write my songs. The inspiration for the lyrics come from daily observations and I don’t want to force anything out because of a deadline. This is the most natural way for us and we intend  to keep it that way.

それについては色々と理由があるんだけど、まず一つ目はあまり沢山ライブをやりたくないって事（笑）日常生活の少しの隙間に音楽がある事が俺の中の幸せだから、あんまり沢山やると嫌になりそう。二つ目は普通の生活をしてないと曲が書けないって事。作曲のインスピレーションは日常に潜んでいて、無理矢理捻り出すものじゃない。歌詞に関してもそう。自然体で音楽をやるには今のペースが一番良いと思ってます。

So you take care of the visual aspect of the band, so you’re interested in graphics. When and how did it start? Did you make the cover art for "Cold"? It's amazing!

アートワークも手がけているツトムだけど、美術学校に通ってたの？　マーチやデザインは全部ツトムがやるの？ Coldのアートワークは相当イカしてるけど、あれもツトム？

I didn’t go to an art school but I majored in design in college. I started to get serious about it once I started making merch for the band. Yes, I did the artwork for “Cold” and I’m really thankful that you said that cause I get mixed opinions about it (haha).

美術学校ではないんだけど、大学ではデザイン専攻で色々と学んでいました。本格的にやり始めたのはこのバンドがスタートしてからだけど。マーチもジャケットデザインも全部俺がやってます。Coldのアートワークを褒めてもらえるのはすごく嬉しい！あれは賛否両論だったから（笑） Thank you for your time, I wish you good luck with the band and in personal lives! I hope to see you in Europe some day!

INTERVIEW: In Between

Hey there! How are you? Can you introduce yourself?

My name's Mike and I play guitar in In Between. I'm doing pretty well, I'm currently answering these questions on my commute to school. I hope to be as candid with my responses as possible because fuck it.

You are about to release your new record "Locustvale" via No Sleep. The title song was released along with a cool music video 2 years ago. Can you tell us about the record and why did it take so long to finish it?

This record was started two years ago to the week. I remember because I took late start classes at community college to make time for it. The song "Locustvale" was recorded at a different session, a year before the LP. We tracked that song with my dream producer Brian Mcternan with the intention to maintain output as we took time off to write. Ironically, the plan backfired in an unprecedented way. During the recording of "Locustvale" (the song), we lost our drummer... Or rather, he kicked himself out. Brian agreed to produce the LP but due to personal reasons he decided to take a mental health break from making records. In the summer of 2014, we completed a financially fruitless/van vanquishing US tour then went directly into recording with Paul Leavitt, resenting each other every minute of tracking. We got our friends Dan and Brendan from Turnstile to record drums. They learned the songs in the studio, and all instrumental tracking was finished in three or so days. Recording was going smoothly until scheduling vocals began pushing the date back more and more. Events outside our control made things bleak once the LP was finished. Honestly, it was only last week where I was still thinking it would never be released. We can point fingers all day on why it happened, but it comes down to us being an unknown band that tried to move too fast and made all the wrong decisions 100% of the time. I really do appreciate @nosleeprecords for being flexible with us, which is undeserved.

Was there anything special/different about the writing process this time that you'd like to share?

Recording the drums was an inspiring moment. We would be in the studio and go through the songs once or twice so Dan or Brendan could learn them, then Paul would just hit record and it'd be done. I wrote a lot of the drum parts myself but they added a new dimension of nuance to the songs. This record would be nothing without their drumming. As for the writing process, I was bummed that we de-emphasized our hardcore roots on our last two EPs so I was adamant on including fast songs (one song I had written back when the demo was released). On the aforementioned shit tour, we argued endlessly about distinctions between "melodic hardcore" and "pop punk." I think we remain split on the inclusion of these songs. In general, the music on Locustvale is conceptually complex but actually simpler than Still because everyone thought I did too much. Which is true. Looking back on the LP, I still think I did too much and honestly, I no longer relate to that way of approaching music.

Why did you choose to name the record "Locustvale"? What's the story behind the title?

I can't speak for Grant [vocalist]. One, because I wouldn't want to out his message. Two, because I have no fucking idea what any of his lyrics mean; he studies too much Dan Higgs and reads too many spiritual books. I do know that "Locustvale" is a real thing somewhere.

The new single called “Northwick Park Station” is quite a change compared to your demo, but seems to be a natural development of what you've done on "Still". What were your influences when you started the band and how did it change?

Despite what I may have implied above, our influences have never changed. Someone I consider a mentor once described to me a method of song writing where you had a triangle of influences and you explore various degrees of those influences, like a spectrum. I believe that's how niche hardcore bands like us operate. "Northwick" may not sound like Lifetime, but it's modeled after a similar band like Split Lip who has mid-tempo songs with 16th note feels. My guitar style is me failing to be as virtuosic as J. Robbins in Burning Airlines. We just try to explore all corners of our sub-sub-sub genre.

Some of you play in other bands as well, right?

Anthony plays in Praise and a sick new band called Nerve Endings. Ian and I started a hardcore/punk band called Soft Grip, with an EP coming soon. I'm also in a pop punk band called DPC. My label [Photobooth Records] partner and I hope to have at least 5 bands going in 2017 to make up for our lollygagging.

I really dig your sound, especially guitars. Could you tell a little bit about the gear you use? (optional, if one of the guitarists would like to answer and maybe take a pic of guitar/pedalboard)

Growing up I wasn't even allowed to play an electric guitar unplugged in my house. I'm so new to gear I don't know where to start, or know what I'm talking about. Anthony [guitarist] is really into gear. I just made my way to Barnes and Noble to charge my phone so I don't got a picture of anything, but here's a picture of his text message:

Explore the scene: Japan (Part 1)

Some time ago I wrote a list of Australian bands I recommend. it went pretty smooth and turned out to be a cool idea so I decided to continue it and I picked a country I’m most interested with. It turned out to be really hard this time, cause people in Japan seem to use other social media and I don’t get their language AT ALL. Anyway I managed to find some bands for you, so here we go with the first part of the list! Oh, and I wanted to thank my friend Hirokazu Itou for helping me out a bit :)

Definitely my favourite band off the list. I’d compare their sound to those modern poppunk/melodic hardcore bands that really got interested in 90s alternative/emo scene, so if you like bands like Title Fight, Basement, Turnover or maybe even Knuckle Puck or Real Friends you should definitely check them out. Their new record ‘Cold’ is about to drop soon and it’s awesome! (I’ll post a review soon!)

A emopunk band from Kyoto formed in 2009. The most 90s emo (or maybe even a bit screamo) sounding band on the list - really raw and fast and ultimately melodic. They´ve got 2 records out - ‘zero’ from 2013 and ‘old youngster’ from 2015. Look at those cover arts...don’t you think about 90s emo/screamo immediately?

Another really melodic and emotional band. Formed (most likely) in 2013 remind me of bands like Braid or even Hey Mercedes mixed with Title Fight. Their single ‘ Write out a foul’ really stuck in my head for a long time!

The band I found by an accident and fell for immediately. The band started in 2008 and is from Tochigi. They sound like a extremaly good mix of Snowing and Tiny Moving Parts. Like really, wow.

Recenzja: Núkk - s/t EP

Nukk to czteroosobowy, neocrustowy skład z Wrocławia, stworzony przez kolesi z takich składów jak Dead Dingo, don’t fuck my brain czy Emfazis. Po serii koncertów i demku grupa w końcu uraczyła nas konkretną nagrywką. Na EPkę “Nukk” składa się 5 wręcz przeładowanych emocjami numerów. Numerów, które swym klimatem wryły mnie w fotel, ale o tym za chwilę.

Jestem pod sporym wrażeniem brzmienia tej płyty. Zrealizowane w Satanic Audio piosenki przywodzą na myśl zapierające dech w piersiach lodowcowe krajobrazy malowane głównie za pomocą bardzo przestrzennych gitar uzupełnianych przez świetnie brzmiący bas.

Płytę otwierają sprzęgi i niemalże ambientowe dźwięki “Glaciers”. Po chwili dochodzi świetny wokal, będący według mnie jedną z głównych zalet materiału. Piosenka w pewnym momencie mocno przyspiesza, aby znów wprowadzić rozmyte, smutne krajobrazy z desperackim krzykiem w tle. W “Morr” zahipnotyzowała mnie sekcja rytmiczna, do której później dochodzi momentami wręcz noisowa gitara. I ten tekst... “Dagger” w ciekawy sposób otwiera niepokojący, wydobywający się z oddali riff. Po krótkiej “petardzie” utwór zwalnia, aby w końcu dojść do kluczowego momentu, czyli świetnej melodii. Tylko gitara (o dziwo mało rozmyta :) )  i wokal - pięknie. Reszta zespołu po chwili powraca, by w umiarkowanym tempie poprowadzić utwór do końca. Przedostatni “1706″ to chyba mój faworyt. Naparzanka od początku. Melodia wokalna w momencie “Oh I know there's always something you want to say” to mistrzowstwo, od razu zapada w pamięć. Osobiście pociągnąłbym ten motyw jeszcze chwilę. W połowie utwór zwalnia przechodząc w płynące, “smutno-piękne” ambientowe dźwięki (polecam zwrócić uwagę na bas w tym momencie, bardzo miłe melodyjki!) z wykrzykiwanym “in my nothing you were everything to me”. Końcówka utworu bardzo płynnie przechodzi w zamykający płytę, ambientowy instrumental “Aubrite”. Bardzo przyjemny i ciekawy sposób na domknięcie tematu, fajnie to współgra z całością.

Podsumowując, “Nukk” to świetna i wyjątkowa pozycja. Strasznie podobają mi się wokal i teksty.  Brzmienie basu i partie gitarowe to jakieś pieprzone mistrzostwo. Chciałbym jednak przyczepić się trochę do perkusji, która mogłaby być momentami ciekawsza. W sensie, mam wrażenie, że wokalista i gitarzyści wypruwali sobie żyły, by wyrzucić z siebie całe emocje i dostarczyć przejmującą opowieść, a perkusista po prostu “zrobił swoje”. Nie zrozumcie mnie źle - zrobił to bardzo dobrze, tylko dał chyba troszkę mniej “siebie” niż reszta. Ale może to tylko moje wrażenie :)

INTERVIEW: Jaded

Hi guys, could you introduce yourselves shortly?

I’m Hugh i sing and play guitar, and I’m Felix and i play bass in Jaded.

So when and how did you start the band and how would you describe your stuff?

Felix: Me and Hugh have known eachother for quite some time now, in 2013 we decided to start a band together. Hugh had writen some songs and we drafted Perry in to play drums. We recorded our demo in November of that year and shortly after, Alex joined on Lead Guitar.

Hugh: We’d describe ourselves as an Alternative/Emo band, we draw influence from bands such as Title Fight, Jimmy Eat World and Reuben.

Felix: We’re loud, melancholic punk.

Oh ok! I personally would compare you to Balance and Composure because of that spatious sound :) Anyway, would you mind telling me a bit about your guitar gear? :)

Felix: we’re perhaps the most ill equipped band in the scene right now if I’m honest!

Hugh plays a LTD EC 256 through a pedal our friend Jamie in Homeschooled gave us which is a weird Fuzz/Overdrive pedal. He uses a Vox combo amp and that’s all he really needs.

Alex plays a Fender Strat from the 1990’s which doesn’t have the same twang as a normal Strat. He uses a Small Clone chorus pedal which adds a great texture to our heavier parts of our sound.  he also uses a Laney PL100 Reverb.

Ok then, not “huge” sets! What do you think of the “big pedalboards” trend that’s on recently?

Felix: I think alot of bands used a massive pedalboard as a crutch to prop themselves up. just because you have more pedals doesn’t make you a better guitar player/writer.

Hugh: i like it when bands keep it simple, and use effects when needed. as opposed to using alot of pedals at once which can make you sound very muddy.

Ok, I see! Recently you’ve put out a new single called “Valerian”, would you like to tell us something about the song and writing/recording? Is it like a teaser of a record or just a single?

We wrote the song a year ago and added it to our live set. Since then we’ve developed the song rewritten the lyrics as we went. its a teaser to the new record which we are currently writing and recording. We’re recording the record with Sam Bloor who totally gets our sound and the vibe that we’re going for. basically were trying to develop the sound we established on our last eps, but we’ve taken a lot more time on it so we’re hoping it’ll sound much more mature  and that the songs live up to their potential. we’re going in to finish recording the record in August so we’re hoping to release it in October.

Ok, any tours/shows planned in the meantime?

Next week we’re playing a weekender with deadlines (you should definately check them out, they sound like Jawbreaker), who are a great band from Cardiff, Wales. We’re playing Exeter, Bristol and a house show in Cardiff with Pipedream (possibly the best band on the planet right now). Hoping we’re also going to do a full UK tour in October to support the release of the record.

Dana-vocals/guitar Pat- guitar Shane-bass/vocals Jonah-drums We're all out of our minds. We are a band from Kingston, Hamburg, and blakely. We practice in Kingston so I guess Westpoint is from Kingston.

Dana-wokal/gitara Pat- gitara Shane-bas/wokal Jonah-perkusja   Wszyscy jesteśmy troche powaleni.  Dana-vocals/guitar Jesteśmy zespołem z Kingston i Hamburga (Pensylwania, USA). Próby mamy w Kingston, więc w sumie można powiedzieć, że Westpoint jest z Kingston.

What are origins of Westpoint? What other bands do you guys play or played in? Jak doszło do założenia Westpoint? I gdzie jeszcze gracie/graliście?

The origin of Westpoint is I started a band with people I go to shows with, because we all share a similar interest in loud crazy music. Dana sang in a band called United youth, Jonah plays Drums in life of Reilly, and Shane sang in a band called shorthand. Pat is his own entity.

Początki Westpoint są takie, że po prostu założyłem zespół z ziomkami, z którymi chodzę na koncerty, bo wszyscy lubimy głośną muzykę. Dana był wokalistą United Youth, Jonah gra na perkusji w Life of Reilly a Shane śpiewał w zespole Shortland. Pat jest cały swój.

Could you list some bands you consider influential?

Czy byłbyś w stanie wymienić kilka zespołów, które uważacie za inspirujące?

Cold World, Concrete Reality, not too death, dead end path, Title Fight, Stick Together, Bad Seed, and the almighty War Hungry. In 2015 you released your debut EP called “Dive”, and now you have a new single out with a cool music video, what was the concept behind the video and what’s the song about?

W 2015 wydaliście debiutancką EP “Dive”, a ostatnio wrzuciliście nowego singla z fajnym teledyskiem. Jaki pomysł stoi za klipem i o czym jest ten kawałek?

Feel October is about all of my childhood friends leaving Kingston and moving to different parts of the country/ world. It's bitter sweet to see my friends leave but I'm happy they're not home doing the same sitting around I am. The video is basically about my friend Carl having night terrors + random ideas we all wanted to animate. (it's relevant because Carl actually does have night terrors).

Feel October jest o tym, że większość moich znajomych z dzieciństwa opuszcza Kingston by zamieszkać w innych częściach kraju czy świata. To słodko/gorzkie widzieć jak odchodzą, ale z drugiej strony cieszę się, że nie siedzą tutaj i nie marnują czasu jak ja. Teledysk opowiada o moim kumplu Carlu miewającym lęki nocne + do tego różne losowe pomysły które chcieliśmy przedstawić. (I Carl serio ma lęki nocne).

In the last couple of years there has been growing interest in hardcore/punk scene to start more diverse bands, especially 80s/90s alternative rock influenced; how do you think, where does it come from?

Na przestrzeni ostatnich kilku lat można zaobserwować na scenie hc/punk większe zainteresowanie zakładaniem zespołów o szerszych inspiracjach, m.in. alternatywą z lat 80/90, jak myślisz, czym jest to spowodowane?

I think the older people get the more bands they hear about from friends, and the Internet. there's an endless amount of influences packed into Westpoints songs and it's boring to draw influence from just  one genre.

Myślę, że po prostu ludzie z wiekiem poszerzają swoje horyzonty muzyczne, znają więcej kapel które polecili im znajomi. Jest niezliczona ilość rzeczy które wpływają na nas w Westpoint, to nudne czerpać tylko z jednego źródła.

PREMIERE: lost your name - Pleasures

So today I have a pleasure to introduce a new band to you. lost your name are from Frankfurt, Germany and have some sweet 90s influenced space/post rock sound to offer. Here’s a few words from the band:

"lost your name" might be described best with the indie-sound of the 90s. Founded in 2015 they started writing songs - hidden from the world - which they now are to present. While grunge-orientated Rhythmriffs team up with post-rock lead guitarsounds, you'll be surprised by multiple speedchanges and a constant atmospheric sound. Supported by intensive drums, the melancholic lyrics fuse to a sweeping melody that never ceases to amaze you. "lost your name" prove their musicianship on a technical as well as on a creative level with a style to which you can cry or marry. Maybe both. The unique sound, the charming voice and their overall sound pattern makes "lost your name" worth to remember. The song "Pleasures" is about a good time ending. You regret decisions you did and don't know where to belong. It was one of the first songs we wrote together as a band. For the future is planned to release a Split EP. More on that soon. First we will play our first shows.

Hi there, sure. I'm Christian from the band Spirit Desire. In Spirit Desire I'm doing guitar and vocals. :)

How would you describe your music and where do you draw your influences from ?

Jak opisałbyś Waszą muzykę i skąd czerpiecie inspiracje?

Puhhh, this is always a hard question to answer. I rather leave this to the ones who listen to our music. Though I would say we're somewhere between grunge and alternative rock - in the interests of simplification, and referring to our hometown, we call it 'Steel City Grunge' :)

Puhhh, na to pytanie zawsze ciężko mi odpowiedzieć. Opis wolałbym pozostawić słuchaczom. Well researched. :) Yeah it kinda is - we were searching for a name and at some point we came up with the idea of naming ourselves after songs or records we're digging - and there we go.

Niezłe rozeznanie :) Tak, w sumie tak - szukaliśmy nazwy i w pewnym momencie pomyśleliśmy, że spoko pomysłem jest zaczerpnąć nazwę z jakiejś piosenki czy płyty którą się jaramy, i tak się stało.

Busted! haha :D so you've got a new record coming out soon, we have 2 songs known already from your last split and a some new ones, right? can you tell us a bit about the record?

Przyłapani! haha :D niedługo wyjdzie Wasza nowa płyta. Są na niej 2 kawałki znane już z ostatniego splitu, i kilka nowych, prawda? Opowiesz coś o tej EPce?

Yeah, besides the two songs from the split, there will be three new tracks, which haven't been released so far. 'Witching Hour' consists of 5 songs which aren't connected lyrically. Though I think they kinda carry a certain dreamy mood.  Except of the last song, 6th of July, which is a very personal song - my grandpa died last year on 6th of July - the EP is about coping with demons that have been haunting me the last couple of years.

Tak, poza dwoma kawałkami ze splitu są na niej 3 całkiem nowe kawałki. “Witching Hour” to 5 piosenek które nie są ze sobą połączone tematycznie/tekstowo. Mają jednak podobny, senny klimat. Oprócz ostatniej piosenki, “6th of July”, która jest bardzo osobista (mój dziadek zmarł 6 lipca ubiegłego roku) EPka jest o próbie uporania się z demonami, które nawiedzały mnie przez ostatnie kilka lat.

Bardzo mi przykro stary! Przejdę teraz do teledysku, który mamy okazję dzisiaj wspólnie przedstawić na moim kanale. Opowiedzcie coś o klipie i o tym dziwnym tekście z boku!

Haha, well.....the video is basically a collection of footage from travels of my girlfriend and me on the West Coast / Mid West in the US. The text which is displayed on the right side, is an extract from secret Roswell files (alien interview after the Roswell Crash). - This was the idea of our friend Fabian from Stinkmorchel (who did this for us). He saw a documentation about extraterrestrial life (this file was mentioned) and came up with the idea for this video. Weird - isn't it? :) And of course we believe in Aliens!

Haha, więc...teledysk to po prostu zbiór ujęć z mojej podróży po USA z moją dziewczyną. Tekst, który pojawia się po prawej pochodzi z tajnych archiwów Roswell (wywiad z kosmitą po incydencie w Roswell ) - był to pomysł naszego przyjaciela Fabiana z Stinkmorchel (który całość razem zmontował). Widział jakiś doument o życiu pozaziemskim (w którym wymieniony był ten transkrypt) i wpadł na koncept teledysku. Dziwne, nie? :) I oczywiście - wierzymy w UFO!

Haha, nice! You're from Austria, right? How does the scene look like there? And what would you say about this whole emo/grungy/alt rock thing thats happening in US and is partly reflected in Europe?

Haha, nieźle! Jesteście z Austrii, nie? Jak wygląda u was scena muzyczna? I co myślisz o tej całej emo/grungowo/alt rockowej fali która trwa w USA od kilku lat i odbija się na scenie Europejskiej?

It's ok. Let's say it that way: the scene is getting better. :) I think its almost everywhere the same, kids nowadays rather go to clubs and listen to electronic music than going to concerts, that's maybe the reason why there are not that many bands anymore; and therefore, a smaller scene than back in the days (talking of my hometown).

Jest ok. Powiem tak: na scenie u nas jest coraz lepiej :) Myślę, że teraz wszędzie jest tak samo, dzieciaki aktualnie wolą łazić po klubach i słuchać muzyki elektronicznej niż chodzić na koncerty, możliwe, że dlatego nie ma już tylu kapel co kiedyś; z tego powodu scena jest trochę mniejsza niż kiedyś (przynajmniej u mnie w mieście).

I was asking more musicwise, how do you see the scene right now, but I totally agree with the "not going to shows anymore" part,unfortunately...

Chodziło mi bardziej o aspekt muzyczny, jak postrzegasz aktualnie scenę, ale totalnie zgadzam się z tym co powiedziałeś o “nie chodzeniu na koncerty”, niestety...

Ahh, I see... We have a lot of great bands in Austria (especially Punkrock and Hardcore), but unfortunately in some cities, for example Linz (where we are from), it's pretty hard to book shows; therefore, it sometimes is a bit hard to make new friends or to help out befriended bands with a gig . But I think more and more bands from Austria are being recognized outside of Austria (e.g. Astpai, New Native, Demonwomb, Etc.) - maybe it will get better then in these cities. 

Since I have been listening to bands like Nirvana, Weezer, Sonic Youth, and so on, I consider the growing intrest on bands in that genres as a cool thing. It almost seems to me that every day there is a new emo/grunge sort of band to discover. :)

Ahh, o to chodzi... Mamy w Austrii wiele świetnych kapel (szczególnie w punkrocku i hardkorze), ale niestety w niektórych miastach, jak na przykład u nas w Linz, ciężko jest czasem zabookować koncert, przez co czasem ciężko jest poznawać nowe osoby czy pomóc zaznajomionej kapeli z koncertem. Ale wydaje mi się, że coraz więcej kapel z Austrii jest rozpoznawanych za granicą ( na przykład Astpai, New Native, Demonwomb i itd.) - może przez to sytuacja się polepszy. 

W związku z tym, że słucham kapel takich jak Nirvana, Weezer, Sonic Youth itp. bardzi podoba mi się rosnące zainteresowanie kapelami tego typu. Czasami wydaje się, jakbym każdego dnia dowiadywał się o nowej emo/grungowej kapeli :)

SO carrying on with the topic of the music scene, could you list a few bands that you ve been listening to a lot recently and you d totally recommend them? :)

Of course! Let's see.....I've been listening a lot to the new Basement LP and the new one from Narrow Head. But my absolute favorite record over the last few months is definitely Daughter's Not to Disappear.

Jasne! Więc...Sporo słucham nowej płyty Basement i najnowszego Narrow Head. Ale moim totalnym faworytem przez ostatnie kilka miesięcy jest “Not to Disappear” od Daughter.

Ok so to finish with - what are your plans for nearest future as a band?

In summer we're again in the studio, and right now we're in the process of writing. I'd say we will be trying to get together some songs for another record and play as much shows as possible!

INTERVIEW: Alex Henery (Basement)

[ENG] Bastian: Hi Alex! First of all, congratulations on the new record. It’s really amazing!

[PL] Bastian: Cześć Alex! Po pierwsze, gratuluję nowej płyty. Jest świetna!

Alex: Thank you man!

Alex: Dzięki stary!

Bastian: So, how is your first headline tour in Europe going?

Bastian: Jak Wam mija Wasz pierwszy headline tour po Europie?

Alex: It’s crazy man. I can’t believe how many people are coming to the shows, because we’ve done support tours with More Than Life and all these other bands, as well as small shows and festivals like Groezrock, but never just us. So to see all of these people coming to the shows is amazing. I didn’t know that so many people knew about Basement, so it’s pretty sick.

Alex: Jest niesamowicie. Nie mogę uwierzyć ile osób przychodzi na nasze koncerty. Graliśmy tutaj już supporty dla More Than Life i innych kapel, małe i większe koncerty, festiwale jak Groezrock, ale nigdy nie jako główny zespół, więc wspaniale jest widzieć ile osób przychodzi na nasze koncerty.Nie wiedziałem, że tyle osób nas słucha, to jest super.

Bastian: Before you returned, I’m sure that you had some expectations as to what things would be like. How did those expectations meet with reality?

Bastian: Zanim wróciliście do grania na pewno mieliście jakieś wyobrażenia odnośnie tego, jak to wszystko będzie wyglądać. Jak mają się one do rzeczywistości?

Alex: I didn’t expect it to be like this! I thought that people might be excited, which would be cool, but it’s crazier than I thought. It’s exceeded my expectations, and we’re getting to do lots of new things. We went on tour with Brand New, played Reading & Leeds festival, played at Groezrock… They’re all like dream things for us as a band, so it blows my mind every time. A new thing happens and I’m like “Woah! That’s crazy! Nothing can get crazier than this!” and then something else happens, so it’s always exciting.

Alex: Na pewno nie spodziewałem się, że będzie właśnie tak! Myślałem, że może znajdzie się trochę podekscytowanych osób, co byłoby super, ale jest o wiele lepiej niż myślałem. Przerosło to moje oczekiwania, a jest coraz lepiej. Zagraliśmy trasę z Brand New, graliśmy na festiwalu w Reading i Leeds, na Groezrocku... To wszystko są jakby nasze marzenia, więc za każdym razem ciężko mi w to wszystko uwierzyć. Coś nowego się wydarzy i mam takie “Woah! Masakra! Chyba już nie może być lepiej!” i wtedy dzieje się coś jeszcze innego, więc zawsze jest ciekawie.

Bastian: You started as an emo/hardcore/punk band with ‘Songs About the Weather’, and then you evolved and evolved. Now you’re like an alternative band, and I feel like that the kids who listened to you back then have grown up with you, and it’s amazing how you have gone into that alternative scene. In ‘colourmeinkindness’ you could definitely hear grunge influences. What were your main influences when recording the new album?

Bastian: Zaczynaliście jako emo/hardcore/punkowy zespół z  ‘Songs About the Weather’, i wtedy ewoluowaliście i ewoluowaliście. Teraz jesteście jakby alternatywnym zespołem, i mam wrażenie, że dzieciaki które Was wtedy słuchały, “dorastały” z Wami, i cała ta Wasza podróż w alternatywną stronę jest bardzo ciekawa. Na ‘colourmeinkindness’ słychać pewne grungowe inspiracje, a co inspirowało Was podczas nagrywania nowego materiału?

Alex: With our other records you might be able to hear our influences a bit stronger, but this one felt a lot more natural to write. We just wrote songs that we like to play, and so maybe the influences are a bit harder to find.

Alex: Na starszych płytach łatwo wyłapać inspiracje, ale najnowszą pisało się nam o wiele naturalniej. Po prostu pisaliśmy piosenki, które lubimy grać, więc może inspiracje przebijają się trochę mniej.

Bastian: I’ve found some possible influences!

Bastian: Ja kilka wyłapałem!

Alex: Yeah, some people have said Jimmy Eat World and some people have said...

Alex: Tak, niektórzy mówią, że Jimmy Eat World, a kto inny, że na przykład...

Bastian: Failure!

Bastian: Failure!

Kowal: Do you actually listen to a lot of Failure?

Kowal: W sumie to słuchacie dużo Failure?

Alex: I’m a huge Failure fan, and that definitely bleeds into the music, but I think that it’s cool that we wanted to write more melodic songs that had more catchy choruses and more of Andrew singing, rather than shouting. In the past he’s done more shouting, but we still mix it up. I mean, the song ‘Promise Everything’ has more shouting vocals, so I think it’s still a good mix and we’re just being honest as a band. We’re not trying to be anything. I think that this is the best record that represents us as who we are, and it was fun to make it. As for influences, it sounds weird but I was going back and listening to Red Hot Chilli Peppers a lot, and their melody, choruses and harmonies made me think “I wanna have some of that on our record”, you know? Hmmm, who else? I guess Failure. They’re definitely a good rock band. I’m trying to think of who else…

Alex: Jestem wielkim fanem Failure, i to na pewno słychać w naszej muzyce, ale wydaje mi się, że fajnie,że chcieliśmy zobić bardziej melodyjne kawałki z bardziej chwytliwymi refrenami, i więcej śpiewanych niż krzyczanych partii Andrew. Wcześniej więcej krzyczał, ale wciąż staramy się to mieszać. To znaczy, na przykład w piosence ‘Promise Everything’ jest trochę krzyczanych wokali, więc nie jest całkiem jednostajnie. Staramy się być szczerzy w tym co robimy, nie udajemy nikogo. Myślę, że ta płyta najlepiej nas reprezentuje, pokazuje kim jesteśmy. Bardzo fajnie się ją nagrywało. Jeszcze w temacie inspiracji, może zabrzmi to dziwnie, ale często wracałem do Red Hot Chili Peppers i ich melodie, refreny i harmonie sprawiały, że myślałem “Chciałbym mieć coś takiego na naszej płycie”, wiesz? Hmmm, kto jeszcze? Myśle, że Failure. Są świetną kapelą. Myślę, kto jeszcze...

Kowal: Maybe a bit of Smashing Pumpkins?

Kowal: Może trochę Smashing Pumpkins?

Bastian: And Lemonheads? The melodies and stuff.

Bastian: I Lemonheads? Melodie i tak dalej.

Alex: Yeah, sure! Andrew loves them, so yes!

Alex: Tak, na pewno! Andrew ich kocha, więc tak!

Bastian: You’re in the same sort of scene as when you started, with bands like Title Fight, Turnover, Citizen and so on. All of these bands went into the alternative direction, but started on the hardcore scene. Do you think that people, who wouldn’t have otherwise listened to alternative rock music, do so now because of bands you?

Bastian: Wywodzicie się jakby z tej samej sceny co Title Fight, Turnover, Citizen i tak dalej. Wszystkie te kapele poszły w alternatywnym kierunku, ale zaczynały na scenie hc. Myślisz, że są ludzie, którzy nie zaczęliby słuchać alternatywnego rocka gdyby nie kapele takie jak Wasza?

Alex: Well, before we were playing small hardcore DIY shows, whereas now we get to play venues like this [Lido, Berlin], which is so cool! It’s great that we get to play bigger venues, and maybe a kid who’s gone and listened to metalcore or whatever has gone and found our band, because it’s reaching new people. I hope younger kids get to explore bands that I love, like Sunny Day Real Estate and Jets to Brazil and all these other bands maybe through our band, because they look at us and wonder “Who influences Basement?” and then look into it. So, hopefully kids will get into that kind of stuff from us. That’d be amazing.

Alex: Więc, wcześniej graliśmy na małych hardcorowych koncertach DIY, a teraz mamy szansę grać w miejscach takie jak to [Lido, Berlin], co jest niesamowite! Świetnie, że mamy okazję grać w większych klubach, więc może jakiś dzieciak, który zazwyczaj słucha metalcoru czy czegoś innego obczai naszą kapele, ponieważ docieramy teraz do nowych ludzi. Mam nadzieję, że dzieciaki teraz poznają zespoły, które kocham, takie jak Sunny Day Real Estate czy Jets To Brazil i tym podobne zastanawiając się “Kto inspiruje Basement?” i zaczną szukać dalej. Byłoby super.

Bastian: I’ve got two last questions. Some time ago I had a guitar talk with you, and I was wondering how your gear has changed since then?

Bastian: Mam jeszcze dwa pytania. Jakiś czas temu zrobiłem z Tobą wywiad o sprzęcie gitarowym i zastanawiam się jak Twój sprzęt zmienił się od wtedy?

Alex: I don’t think it changed too much. The only thing that I can recollect adding is the MXR delay pedal. I use that a little bit on some songs like For You the Moon and Oversized, but I really just need to buy a reverb pedal, because I’m using it like reverb pedal. I like messing with it. It’s fun and it’s a cool little pedal. That’s pretty much it though, except I think I bought my pedal board since last time, so now I have one of those too.

Alex: Myślę, że nie za bardzo. Jedyna rzecz, która przychodzi mi do głowy, to nowy efekt, a mianowicie delay od MXR. Używam go trochę w kawałkach takich jak For You The Moon czy Oversized, ale potrzebuje jeszcze reverba, ponieważ tego MXRa głównie używam właśnie jako reverba. Lubie się nim bawić. To ciekawy i fajny efekt. Oprócz tego chyba kupiłem sobie pedalboard... to tyle. 

Kowal: Why don’t you have a Jazzmaster on this tour?

Kowal: Dlaczego nie zabrałeś Jazzmastera na tą trasę?

Alex: I play the Jazzmaster and I really like it, but because I didn’t record the album on it, it just doesn’t translate as well. It works for some songs. I think that it’d work well on Oversized and on Pine, but some of the heavier songs need a warmer and beefier sound from humbuckers, but I do really like it.

Alex: Ogólnie na nim gram, i bardzo go lubię, ale nie nagrywałem na nim, także nie oddaje tak dobrze charakteru płyt. Fajnie gada przy niektórych kawałkach, na przykład Oversized i Pine, ale na cięższych kawałkach optrzebuję cieplejszego i mięsistego brzmienia humbuckerów, jednak bardzo lubię tamtego Jazzmastera.

Kowal: Ronan also plays a Gibson now, doesn’t he?

Kowal: Ronan aktualnie też gra na Gibsonie, prawda?

Alex: He does. He bought one in the Chicago Music Exchange whilst we were on tour. They have all these amazing guitars and he just bought one. He had a Japanese Fender Jazzmaster and that had a lot of problems. The wiring was always very hot and it would always squeal, so he decided to get rid of it and he traded it in.

Alex: Prawda. Kupił go w Chicago Music Exchange podczas naszej trasy. Mają tam wiele wspaniałych gitar, a on właśnie jakąś kupił. Miał japońskiego Fendera Jazzmastera z którym było sporo problemów. Elektronika zawsze się bardzo nagrzewała i często wydawał piszczący odgłos, więc postanowił się go pozbyć i go wymienił.

Bastian: You’ve recently changed your management to Roc Nation. Can you tell us about it, and what you think about you and bands like Touché Amoré being there with big bands and pop stars?

Bastian: Ostatnio zmieniliście management na Roc Nation. Opowiesz coś o tym? I co sądzisz o tym, że kapele takie jak Wy i Touché Amoré są w tej samej agencji co wielkie kapele i gwiazdy popu?

Alex: On the outside it looks very strange, like “Why are they with Jay Z and Rihanna?” Touché’s manager worked in punk and hardcore, and managed a few bands like Coheed & Cambria, so we told him that we needed help and that we couldn’t do it anymore by ourselves, because we were so stressed because there was just so much to do day-to-day. So, he spoke to us and we said we wanted to work with him, and then he went to work with Roc Nation. If we wanted to work with him, we were technically working with Roc Nation. Do you know what I mean? That’s the only real connection. They help a little bit with things behind the scenes in the industry.

Alex: Z zewnątrz to musi wyglądać bardzo dziwnie - “Dlaczego oni są tam razem z Jayem-Z i Rihanną?”. Manager Touché który siedzi w punku i hardcorze był managerem kapel jak Coheed & Cambria, więc zwróciliśmy się do niego o pomoc, ponieważ sami nie dawaliśmy już rady ogarniać tego wszystkiego, ponieważ coziennie było do załatwienia pełno stresujących spraw. Więc pogadaliśmy, stwierdziliśmy, że chcemy z nim współpracować, a później on zaczął pracę w Roc Nation. Jeśli chcieliśmy z nim współpracować, to praktycznie współpracowaliśmy z Roc Nation. Czaisz? To w sumie nasze jedyne powiązanie. Pomagają nam trochę za kulisami. 

Bastian: So no tours with Rihanna haha?

Bastian: Więc nie będzie trasy z Rihanną haha?

Alex: [Laughs] Not anything that crazy, but hopefully one day we’ll be able to meet her and Beyoncé and Jay Z, and go to a party or something! [Laughs] But nah, it’s really not that crazy. It sounds cool but it’s really just normal, boring stuff.

Alex: [Śmiech] Nic tak szalonego, ale mam nadzieję, że pewnego dnia poznamy ją i Beyoncé i Jaya Z i pójdziemy razem na imprezę czy coś! [śmiech] Ale nie no, to serio nic wyjątkowego. Brzmi fajnie, ale to zwykłe, nudne sprawy.

BURKE ON TOUR!

We are Burke from Mainz, Germany and we are going on tour in March throughout Germany, Czech Republic and Austria. After a fun first year of having the opportunity to play few bigger shows with bands like Tigers Jaw and Foxing and many small shows in Germany and Austria plus a tour with Cool Living, we hope for an even better second year of the bands existence. Hey mates, there's no easy way for us to put this - We found out tonight that our van was broken into and a whole load of our gear has been stolen. We're still going to be playing all shows booked and we would appreciate any support at all.

[ENG]What guitars are you currently using? Which one is your favourite?

[PL]Jakich gitar obecnie używasz? Które to Twoje ulubione?

Joni: I’m currently playing an early 90’s Fender Jazzmater 1966 Reissie in aged white. This is my main guitar but i also use a old black strat for practice sometimes.

Aktualnie gram na Fenderze Jazzmasterze 1966 Reissue z początku lat 90tych w kolorze “aged white”. To moja główna gitara, czasem na próbach używam też starego, czarnego strata.

Lew:  I currently own a Squier Jaguar and a really cheap telecaster, but I’m using a Puresalem sad fester which is absolutely beautiful. I borrowed it from my friend Reece Mee out of the band Castaway, such a cool dude!

Aktualnie mam Squiera Jaguara i jakiegoś taniego telecastera, ale gram też na pięknym Puresalemie Sad Fester. Pożyczyłem go od mojego kumpla Reece’a Mee z kapeli Castaway, świetny koleś!

What was your first guitar?

Jaka była Twoja pierwsza gitara?

Joni: My first guitar was either a red squire strat or a squire tele deluxe (Sum 41 signature guitar),however they didn’t get played often, this was way before I took playing seriously.

Moją pierwszą gitarą był albo czerwony squier strat albo squier tele deluxe ( sygnatura Sum 41), ale nie grałem na nich zbyt dużo. To było jakiś czas zanim zacząłem grać na poważnie.

Lew:  I had an acoustic guitar and used to sing and play in pubs….. LAME.

Miałem akustyczną gitarę na której grałem śpiewając w pubach...OBCIACH.

What pedal effects are you using?

Joni: Working myself through the chain I have: Korg pitch black tuner > Blues driver (clean boost) > POG2  > Way Huge Swollen Pickle > Volume pedal > Crybaby wah (Pats pedal aha) > EHX little big muff > EHX graphic fuzz (just used as a graphic EQ) > Phase 90 clone (its Lew’s pedal ive borrowed aha) > Boss chorus ensemble (everything turned all the way up) > TC Vortex flanger > EHX Memory Boy (mild slapback with chorus) > Delay Pedal (its old I don’t know the brand) > Digitech Polaris reverb (my favorite setting is halo) > Boo Instruments Tremolo (everything up with volume mid way for stutter effect) > EHX Freeze (Used for freezing the reverb synths tail) > Nux time force (just used as a looper).

Lew:  Where do I start…. I go into a Mooer baby tuner, then Proco RAT then a lil’ big muff that links to a swollen pickle. After that I have a boss ce-5 chorus and a really cheap akai flanger, that’s all for modulation as Joni’s stolen my phaser! At the end of the chain is a digitech obscura delay which is new, then a holy grail reverb into a stereo pulsar tremolo a MXR micro amp then finally I've just bought a tc ditto looper which has made writing so much more fun! They all do cool things couldn’t live without my pedals!

Od czego by tu zacząć...Najpierw Mooer baby tuner, potem Proco RAT, Little Big Muff i Swollen Pickle. Następny jest Boss CE-5 chorus i bardzo tani akai flanger, to tyle jeśli chodzi o modulacje, bo Joni ukradł mój phaser! Na końcu jest digitech obscura delay który jest najnowszy, potem holy grail reverb do stereo pulsar tremolo, MXR micro amp i w koncu również nowy ditto looper który daje dużo radochy przy tworzeniu! Wszystko jest mi niezbędne i nie przeżyłbym bez tych efektów!

Your favourite amp/head? Why?

Twój ulubiony wzmacniacz? Dlaczego?

Joni: I used to own a Fender Hotrod, it was amazing for the cleans which I loved, however as I started to grow to more fuzz it didn’t give enough beef as I wished, from this I got a Fender 70’s bassman. It worked amazing for the fuzz however now the cleans weren’t as crisp as I wished aha. I then ran the Bassman along with a 80’s Kelly combo amp and it sounds amazing as the Kelly gave the amazing crisp clean and the Bassman gives the low beefy end. Currently now i use a Fender Supersonic 60 head with the matching blonde cab. It has both the tones i had with the combo and bassman so i invested in one and it was completely worth it.

Kiedys używałem Fendera Hotroda, miał wspaniałe czyste brzmienie które uwielbiałem, ale gdy zacząłem używać więcej fuzza brzmienie nie było wystarczająco mocne, dlatego przeskoczyłem na Fendera 70′s Bassmana. Świetnie współpracował z fuzzem, ale czyste brzmienie nie było tak “chrupkie” jak bym chciał hah. Następnie był Bassman razem z combem Kelly z lat 80tych i gadało to niesamowicie,bo Kelly miał odpowiadający mi clean a Bassman mięcho. Aktualnie używam jednak heada  Fender Supersonic 60 z dedykowaną paką w kolorze “blonde”. W jednym mam teraz oba brzmienia, na których mi zależało, więc to chyba dobra inwestycja

Lew:  I use a Blackstar HT50 club head which I really like, although I used a Blackstar artisan combo on the record and it sounded amazing, also Luke Medlock from ever let me use his old orange head on the single and that sounded wicked.

Mam wzmacniacz Blackstara HT50 Club z którego jestem bardzo zadowolony, ale na płycie użyłem comba Blackstar Artisan które brzmiało świetnie. Na singlu grałem na starym Orange’u Luke’a Medlocka z Ever, też było mega dobrze.

What kind of guitar gear are you dreaming of?

O jakim sprzęcie marzysz?

Joni: There’s too much gear I’m dreaming of, anyone who knows me knows I am always swapping gear every week however I’d love a fender bandmaster head with matching cab so that’s next on the list. Guitar wise I would also love another jaguar, I am a real big fan of the Johnny Marr colour scheme but I would love something older for the feel of it.

Zbyt dużo tego jest, każdy kto mnie zna, wie, że co chwile coś wymieniam. Aktualnie mam faze na wzmacniacz Fender Bandmaster z dedykowaną paką. Jeśli chodzi o gitary, to zdecydowanie kolejny Jaguar. Jestem wielkim fanem kolorystyki modeli Johnnyego Marra, ale chyba wolałbym coś starszego.

Lew:  At the moment I’m after a fender classic player HH Stratocaster so I’ve been saving for a while and finally just got one, should be arriving in January! Pedal wise just a graphic eq and maybe an overdrive, I've just bought a delay and a looper so that was a couple I've had on the wish list a while crossed off.

Aktualnie marzy mi się Fender Classic Player HH Stratocaster, więc odkładałem na niego od jakiegoś czasu i w końcu zamówiłem, powinien być u mnie jakoś w styczniu! Pod kątem efektów, to graficzny equalizer i overdrive... marzyły mi się delay i looper, ale w końcu je kupiłem!
