@josiahanimation
Dear mutuals,
what overseas animation studio do you think fits my style?
If only Chowder was animated in Korea by Rough Draft Studios and Yearim Productions instead of that horrible Hong Ying (which is my favorite Chinese animation studio BTW).... then the overseas directors would include Dong Young Lee (supervising), Young Min Kwon, Young Sik Kim, Ki Hong Jung, Yung Soo Hwang, Chang Woo Shin, Tae Gon Kim, Jea Ok Jeong, and Chang Sung Shin (Yearim), Sung Hoon Kim, Kang Chul, In Soo Ahn, Lim Hyung Doo, Byung Nam Cho, and Jun Hee Yoo (Rough Draft).
Their first episode was the series premiere, "The Froggy Apple Crumple Thumpkin", but "Chowder's Girlfriend" was the first episode done solo, being animated by Yearim. Both of them stopped animating after Season 3. "Weekend at Schnitzel's" was Rough Draft's last episode, and "Gazpacho!" was Yearim's last episode.
But it wouldn't be just RDK and Yearim doing the episodes. Dong Woo Animation Co., Ltd., another South Korean studio would begin animating the show starting with the Season 1 episode "The Catch Phrase" and ending with the Season 3 episode "The Prank".
Dong Woo's overseas director was Bong Il Park and would've had animation on par with Yearim's FANON animation on the show.
Saerom Animation would begin with "A Taste of Marzipan" and end with "The Polutry Geist" alongside Rough Draft. The overseas director was Gi Ho Hwang.
WildBrain Entertainment (a Canadian studio) would begin with "The Vacation" and end with "A Little Bit of Pizzazz!". The animation directors were Terry Permane and Simon Ward Horner with Jeanne Erickson as supervising layout director.
Yeson Entertainment would begin with "Kid Schnitzel" alongside WildBrain and end with "The Toots" in Season 3. The overseas directors were Chul Ki Kwon and Kwang Jin Kim.
And finally, Digital eMation would start with "The Heist" and end with the series finale "Chowder Grows Up". The overseas directors were Sang Il Sim, Yung Won Jung, and Jin Sung Kim.
Sunwoo Entertainment would've taken over Dong Woo after Season 2, but got fired due to unknown reasons. They eventaully did some Season 3 episodes, albeit uncredited. You can very clearly what was done by Sunwoo and what was not.
Also, a fanon studio guide is on the way soon, so please keep your eyes peeled for that. Okay, that''s all I got for now!
See you on the other side! @dorothydalmati1
Animaniacs Animation Studios: Tokyo Movie Shinsha (TMS) Part 2
So Tumblr decided to actually fuck itself for no reason and basically deleted every piece of text from part 1. 🙃
So thanks to that, I do not have the energy to remake it at the moment and I apologize for the inconvenience.
Edit: It is remade!
Finishing thoughts and comments on TMS!
TMS is the image I have of the Warners for season 1 and 2 since they pretty much carried the Fox Kids era of the show.
Actually that brings me to something else. Whenever I think of Wakko’s voice, I always associate the deeper version with TMS. Since Wang picked up most of the slack during the Kids’ WB era, it’s honestly so odd hearing the higher-pitched version when looking at episode 84 and Wakko’s Wish.
Speaking of the movie, my overall opinion on it is alright. I don’t go back to it a lot, but I do enjoy it.
I think my favorite scene other than Salazar and the Warners is the chase/avalanche. There’s some really good energy and expressions in this sequence.
I know it’s been mentioned by a few users, but the detail of Yakko’s torn glove is something that I absolutely love.
Also I love the small panning shot when Yakko begins the story. It might not be much in terms of animation, but it’s something that stuck with me automatically from first viewing.
Unfortunately, TMS did admittedly decrease in quality after the channel shift, but not by a lot. Their stuff is still great and I’m glad that it’s preserved in the form of the reboot designs.
Favorite Segments (in episode order) (songs will not count):
“Taming of the Screwy” (Ep. 5)
“Babblin’ Bijou” (Ep. 26)
“Hot, Bothered, and Bedeviled” (Ep. 30)
“Ups and Downs” (Ep. 52)
Also not gonna lie, I was gonna make it a top 5, but most segments are on the level of “pretty good but not to the point where I can pick out any specific one off the topic of my head” (if that makes sense). The others will be a top 5 tho.
Animaniacs Animation Studios: Tokyo Movie Shinsha (TMS) Part 1 (Redux)
Remake of original post (again thanks a lot Tumblr), so sorry for anyone who’s basically reading (most of) the same thing as they did before.
Long story short, this was the first of my posts where I share my thoughts on the animation studios of Animaniacs.
A big credit to @legion1979 who has unfortunately been inactive for years, but check out their posts for a quick analysis for each episode.
Anyway, no time to waste.
To be honest, TMS is the studio where I have the least unique thoughts on.
TMS is TMS. They’re the gold standard of animation style for the show.
To me, their trademark will always be the awesome expressions and poses and the overall frenzy they give to a scene.
Also I know that “Hooked on a Ceiling” is put up on a hella high pedestal, but I think it’s a bit overrated. Just a bit; it’s still good tho.
They also strike out on the visual gags for me.
“Taming of the Screwy” has that one where Scratchy tells the kids to stop with the gags and while Yakko and Dot just have blindfolds, Wakko has a whole lock on him. I’m in stitches almost every time.
One other gag is from “La La Law” and it’s a little in the background (or foreground haha). While Yakko is talking in one scene, Wakko takes a bite out of his chair and Dot’s worried expression kills me.
Speaking of “Taming of the Screwy”, I wanna talk about it for a sec.
It is considerably low-quality than the rest of the TMS library. Tatsunoko Production gave the Warners really beady-looking designs and the backgrounds are pretty washed out, overall it reminding me of an 80s anime. But that’s why it’s so charming to me. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite episodes, if not my definite favorite.
“Roll Over Beethoven” is another one of those lower-quality segments.
Even though there are quite a number of ugly drawings (including Dot with the long sexy legs like honestly why), I go back to it a lot.
This sequence is my favorite animation from it. Points that it’s honestly the best that the cartoon is gonna get.
A detail that I love is the character tics that they give to the Warners.
Yakko is the protective big brother so he often has his arm wrapped around his siblings.
Dot usually has her hands on her hips, showing that she’s the sassy one. Wakko has his hands behind his back, showing that he’s the reserved one. They are small touches, but ones that I love.
Continued in part 2!
Animaniacs Animation Studios: Wang Film Productions
Next up, Wang Film Productions.
Literally the best word that I describe Wang: baby.
They usually draw them very rounded and it makes them look very soft and SOOOO CUTE. Can’t forget about the fantastic expressions as well.
But I am willing to bet that the baby look is the reason why a lot of people think that the Warners are younger than they actually are.
Greatest example I think is Yakko. (Left - TMS; Right - Wang)
Look at the angles and sharpness (I’m not sure what else to call it :P) that TMS does. Even though at first glance you might not think that he’s that old (and he’s not), you could still probably tell that he’s a teenager. Meanwhile most of the time, Wang makes him look like he’s 11 or smth.
I ain’t complainin’ tho; again, they look adorable so it’s a pass for me.
Of course, the trademark is the eyebrow lines when the Warners’ eyes are closed or half-lidded. (which I cannot replicate at all when I draw them haha)
I think the other thing that I like about their designs is how they draw their mouths when they’re pouting.
Also the more I think about it, the more I realize that whenever Wakko looks high, Wang is almost always the studio that drew it.
Shit’s funny tho.
Lastly, unfortunately, just like TMS, the quality lessened during the Kids’ WB era.
‘Course, there are some gems (”From Burbank With Love” is my first example), but I think it’s more prevalent with Wang than TMS since Wang produced a lot more. It’s kinda a sad case for “The Sound of Warners” ‘cuz I really like it, but it’s definitely bogged down by some weird drawings.
Favorite Segments (in episode order):
“King Yakko” (Ep. 10)
“Space Probed” (Ep. 15)
“Hercule Yakko” (Ep. 25) (this one is really good in spite of that godforsaken overused Prince joke)
“The Sound of Warners” (Ep. 78)
“From Burbank With Love” (Ep. 87)
Honorable Mentions:
“De-Zanitized” (Ep. 1)
“O Silly Mio” (Ep. 31)
“Baloney and Kids” (Ep. 61)
“Go Fish” (Ep. 77)
(writing this is making me realize dang I really like a lot of Wang segments)
Animaniacs Animation Studios: StarToons
Alright, today we got the American studio.
StarToons is a funny case to me. At first, I didn’t like it much ‘cuz of how cartoony the animation was. Like I said, I thought (and still do think) TMS was more “sophisticated” while StarToons was more exaggerated. But over time, I grew to really appreciate it. (But in my defense, the earlier episodes were pretty trash ngl. :P)
The main reason why I appreciate it? Jon McClenahan.
He was the head of the studio and he always encouraged other animators to do a part. It was never just him and he never took outright control of everything, and seeing all their styles only makes me admire it more, especially when they blend together.
Helps that his style is really appealing. Broad faces and expressions (can you tell that I have a big thing for expressions lolll) that give a confident aura to the animation.
Small thing that I grew to love about his style is that Wakko’s hat bill is drawn pointing straight down.
Jeff Siergey’s style is like really liquid-y. His faces have a squishy feel which helps the animation look bouncy.
By contrast, Spike Brandt’s style is more broad (not as much as McClenahan) and more sharp. My favorite part of his is how devious he can make the kids look with the half-circle eyes.
Also, other small thing: in “Macbeth”, I love that Yakko’s ears are drawn in the same angle as he turns his head.
One animator that I’m hella sad that we didn’t get enough was David Pryor.
He joined during season 5 and you can see his work in the Macadamia Nut parody, “Magic Time”, and the “There’s Only One of You” song from “Hooray for North Hollywood Pt. 1″. His designs took inspiration from McClenahan and you can tell by like the head shape, but the more angular look makes it distinct, and I really like it.
Lastly, I want to leave Neal Sternecky as an honorable mention.
In the show, I’ve only recognized his stuff in “Chairman of the Bored” and “Macadamia”, but he’s also featured in the comics. His style is really loose and smooth (I particularly like it in “Macademia”), and I wish we saw more of it in the show.
So sad that they shut down in the same year I was born in yikes. I hope the crew’s doing alright.
Favorite Segments (in episode order)
“Chairman of the Bored” (Ep. 32)
“Ragamuffins” (Ep. 59)
“Dot - The Macadamia Nut” (Ep. 92)
“Magic Time” (Ep. 94)
Very special mention goes to “There’s Only One of You”; I know I said that songs were exempt, but since the rest of the episode is animated by Wang, I figured this was a fitting exception.
Animaniacs Animation Studios: AKOM
Don’t worry guys, I didn’t forget about the discussion. Just wanted to gather my thoughts and do some other stuff in the meantime.
A’ight I’mma say this: I think people give way too much shit to AKOM.
That being said tho.. their animation is just okay.
They can have some pretty good expressions at times, but overall, there’s usually nothing spectacular happening in the animation. But honestly, it’s fine by me.
One complaint that I remember @legion1979 having was that the Warners often looked very pudgy. It’s true that they do, but shit, I think it’s cute. Literally makes me wanna pinch their cheeks like a grandma.
However, one complaint I do agree with is about the whites of their eyes.
Sometimes they’re on-model…
…and other times, they look uncanny as hell.
Please stop looking at me like that.
Other than that, I don’t have much else to say about them. AKOM’s done really great work (my mind immediately gravitates to The Simpsons in particular), but too bad they got the short end of the stick with Animaniacs.
Favorite Segments (in episode order):
“Dough Dough Boys” (Ep. 37) (I honestly can’t explain why, but I really like this one; I just end up going back to it a lot)
“This Pun for Hire” (Ep. 77)
Honorable Mentions:
“Nothing but the Tooth” (Ep. 18)
“Four Score and Seven Migraines Ago” (Ep. 21)
“The Girl with the Googily Goop” (Ep. 80)
“A Very Very Very Very Special Show” (Ep. 86)
“Ten Short Films about Wakko Warner” (Ep. 89)
Animaniacs Animation Studios: Freelance Animators Co., Ltd.
Oh God.
OK, everyone knows that they’re bad, but truth be told, I like how rubbery the movement is. It’s like trying to be fluid but not quite. And this goes for all of their segments, not just the Warners.
Speaking of the Warners, their designs kinda grew on me.
This is the beadiest design they’ve ever had, even more than Tatsunoko Production. But that combined with the squishy-like movement? I kinda like it.
That being said…
I literally can’t look at “Chalkboard Bungle” bro. Like I literally can’t.
Again, I kinda like the sloppiness of the beginning, but once the Warners show up, it’s all “eugh”.
This is like the only shot in the cartoon that I actually decently like. He’s kinda cute.
And it’s sad ‘cuz it has some nice jokes in it. Too bad they were intended to be visual gags and the “visual” part of it ain’t so nice. Also, that whole angry Wakko bit was really poor in my opinion.
“Moby or Not Moby” is just eh. Nothin’ particularly really ugly about it, but nothin’ special either. That’s honestly it from me.
Minor thing, but I do like how they brought Captain Ahab back for the “Noel” song. I like him fine enough here, but TMS really did his animation justice.
“Survey Ladies” is their best Warners cartoon. No question.
I can honestly count the number of ugly drawings on one hand. It’s a pretty good short if I say so myself.
Also I love this devious as hell face on Yakko. He planning something.
Freelance is another studio that shut down some time ago. Such an unfortunate end, but I can’t say that I miss them too much.
Animaniacs Animation Studios: Other
Oh yeah, we ain’t done just yet. I got a few more things to discuss. We have the minor studios to talk about!
The minor studios consist of Varga Studio, Ltd., Phillippine Animation Studio Inc., and Koko Enterprises.
Varga only animated “When You’re Traveling”. As for the song itself, I don’t really care for it. Some of the movement’s kinda wonky, but eh.
I thought this was a good drawing. Nice pose and expression on Yakko.
I laugh at this one ‘cuz I like to think he’s like one second from snapping someone’s neck.
Something about his hands here I kinda just like. It reminds of a chubby mascot-kinda thing, and while normally I hate them (mascots I mean; they’re creepy to me but I digress), I thought this was kinda cute. I dunno how else to describe it.
Phillippine Animation only did “Aquaintances”. I remember a comment on a YouTube video that described them as “diet TMS”. And yeah, I can see that.
This segment has some really fluid animation at times. After the “performance” in the beginning, the Warners walk back up to the stand and I was really mesmerized by the animation, especially with their tails.
Truth be told, my favorite part of it is this bit with Yakko. The movement looks a bit off (especially with the weird eyes), but it’s still charming to me.
Btw, when I was getting screencaps, I ended up pausing on this funny frame of Dot. (why does she look like a dog lol)
Koko’s an interesting one. They did more than the other two, and I often compare them to AKOM since they’re both South Korean studios, and honestly, overall I see them on equal terms: not spectacular, but decent enough.
A “mistake” that I see tho is the shine in their eyes. They seem to use them as pupils, and although I’m cool with that design choice, it’s technically wrong. (Last I checked anyway; feel free to correct me)
TMS also did that a few times (you can see it in “Hello Nice Warners” and some bits of “Cookies for Einstein”), so they’re not the only ones to make that mistake.
The first picture in particular is actually interesting to me. I saw that style being used in the trailer for the reboot. Hmm.
In “The Carpool”, they use these really kooky looking designs, and honestly I dig them.
Also, this shot from “Here Comes Attila” is awesome. That’s a really nice Dot.
Favorite Segment: “Cute First (Ask Questions Later) (Ep. 93)
Startoons is the Best (In My Opinion)
I’d just like to take a moment as to why I love Startoons the most out of any of the animation studios. Many people point to TMS to being the best animation studio, and while I think they are very good, I don’t think they draw the characters the best. That goes to Startoons.
Credit to @legion1979 for all of the pictures used.
First, Startoons is very stylized. Yeah, TMS has great expressions, but no one ever points out the expressions that Startoons has done.
Look at them! They have so much personality. You would never see TMS do an expression like Yakko with the NOT! sign.
Startoons has had a handful of songs, just like TMS. They’ve done, off of the top of my head, Wakko’s America, Be Careful What You Eat, Dot: The Macademia Nut, and There’s Only One of You. There’s probably more, but again, that’s just off the top of my head.
I’m gonna talk about Dot: The Macademia Nut, and that it features of the best animation and drawings the show has ever had.
First of all, Dot. All of her outfits are on point, and the expressions and poses are amazing. Here are some pictures.
Yakko and Wakko look amazing too.
Just watching the song shows how perfect the animation is. It’s unbelievably good.
Anyway, I’d like to talk about the BAD animation. Yes, Startoons has bad animation occasionally. The Big Candy Store comes to mind.
But hey, TMS has some pretty bad animation sometimes. Taming of the Screwy has it for a majority of the episode. The Warners look very weird.
Finally, I’d like to say that Startoons improved over the course of the series. Macademia Nut came from the last season, and looks better than Wakko’s America from season one. On the other hand, I’d say TMS went down in quality instead. Cutie and the Beast has some pretty weird moments, and Wakko’s Wish also has some strange moments. The best of that movie goes to Pinky and the Brain.
Honestly, I just prefer how the Warners look in the Startoons style. I know there are different animators and boarders that still give differences in the style, you can see that, but I love all of them. I really do. Just watch Ragamuffins to see the best the show can look.
The above picture of them running is my favorite way the Warners are drawn. They look perfect.
Anyway. That’s it.

hi guys this is part one btw
PART TREE!!!!!! 🌲🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳
You know, these screenshots of Edison from the LeapFrog movies make it look like they were animated in Korea even though they're actually not! Pictures 3 and 4 kinda look like Rough Draft/Yearim's art style from the early 2000's.
A lot of the post-2008 movies were actually animated in China and Taiwan by two studios; Wang Film Productions and Hong Ying Animation (according to the credits). Hong Ying has previously worked on the likes of AOSTH, those horrible Golden Films ripoffs, certain episodes of Phineas and Ferb, Madeline in Tahiti, the first few seasons of Seven Little Monsters and many more.
Maybe that should explain why the animation style in these later ones look more "bouncy" and "fluid" than usual. I think the earlier ones done by Porchlight were animated in the Phillippines......
