âťť Â a pavement of the past
Josiah was a poster child for neglected kids. His face was something no hopeful parent ever wished to see. He was the staple for that little boy who played alone in the sandbox, wondering when his mom or dad would pick him up from the adoption center and take him home to a car shaped bed. Instead, he got the Hollands. They were dressed nicely, not a hair out of place and Josiah remembered hating how perfect they were, but they promised him the world and no child could ever say no to that.
They were indeed very buttoned-up. They woke up, ate, went to church and then to bed at the same time daily. His schedule was planned out strategically and Josiah could also count on the stability. However, with perfection came the boring nothingness that was supposed to be his childhood. There was no sand box or mud pies. There was no spiked up hair or cut off jeans. There was only church and piano lessons, but he always told himself that it could be worse. He could be alone.
The more time went on, the more Josiah felt something was off– off the rocker and completely maddening. His first time seeing things was when he was seven. They went to visit his grandparents and upon entering their family church and running his fingertips along the pews of it, a gruesome picture painted out before him. They were in the same location, but it was lit by candles. A woman, about the age of his biological mother, was tied to a man-made cross and a pastor that resembled his father read from the scripture. “Witches are an abomination.” were the words he remembered most and her screams as they murdered her kept Josiah awake for days.
It didn’t stop there. Little things would come and go, nothing too hard to swallow like before. More like touching his mother’s toothbrush and swearing he could see her in front of her vanity using makeup to cover up her imperfections and painting her lips the same light pink he grew to hate as they left kiss marks on his cheek. He’d touch his father’s antique watches and could see who wore them before him and what kind of person they were. It was different. It was an imaginative thing and kept him occupied for the better half of his childhood.
Josiah was eaves dropping, maybe trying to listen in on what was going to happen for his 16th birthday. Maybe they had finally gotten him and I-Phone or maybe they would let him hang out with friends from his school. He knew he was sheltered but didn’t take much to it as he thought it was what his parents wanted for him. Maybe it was for the better. He heard his father speaking on the phone, his words were muffled but he made out some of it. His father agreeing to another person, but swearing that Josiah wasn’t a witch, he was just mentally unwell and seeing and hearing things was a major part of his “illness” and Josiah felt his heart sink.
He remembered every premonition now, no matter how little or small and how it all added up to what he knew his parents despised, but then again, if he were crazy what did he know? The only way to find out was to keep searching. When he was home alone, he’d seek out family antiques and touch them until he found something that made him piece together the puzzle that was never ending and confusing. He faced the facts and succumbed to being crazy; succumbed to being a shut-in for his own good for two years.
When he was finally an adult he found his way out of his home, searching for answers. He saw doctors and got a different diagnosis every time, making him feel a little more uneasy with each therapist spitting new words at him. It wasn’t until he heard of Hollow Grove that a light bulb lit and he made the decision to move there and try to finally find the missing pieces to himself and what his family has been hiding.
***Josiah’s adoptive family is canoned to come from a long line of hunters. His premonitions were things that have happened with the Holland’s notorious streak. I have kind of based the history off of the movie Red State which if you have seen will make his first premonition make more sense. A family cult of Godly humans getting rid of whatever they assume to be wrong. I tried to clarify this the best I could in his biography.
âťť Â the nature of the beast
Josiah is a generally self-conscious and nervous person. He is still adjusting to the real world outside of home and just how cruel it can be. It always keeps him on his toes. He is timid and quiet until you speak to him and teach him new things. He is easily fascinated and entertained, finding joy in a lot of child-like things. He is neurotic and paranoid, being very confused as to what he may be and how he is going to find the answers. While he is open to conversation, he hates to be touched and you could say he almost fears it. Other than that he is open-minded the best he could be, but still has the classic foot in mouth disease, saying and doing things a little inappropriate or offensive at times, but is open to learning and growing while seeking the answers he needs.
