THEY ARE SO GAY

Yuru Yuri San Hai does four things that the previous seasons never really dealt with too much and does them exceptionally well regardless of one’s opinions on the new animation style, staff, etc.

1.) The humor is so much closer to the manga’s style of joke delivery. S1 and S2 had some fantastically hilarious moments, but it also relied a lot of sight gags and cartoon-y moments. San Hai takes those elements and implements them when the joke calls for it. If not, it relies on the delivery from the characters, like in the manga. I think that was a risky, but ultimately great move. Scenes like Kyouko getting caught making faces during the blackout didn’t need any over-the-top moments to be hilarious, which proved to be a good sign.

2.) The world the cast lives in feels so much more rich than before. In the last two seasons, and in the manga mostly, if an area is populated or busy, it’s usually for the sake of the joke or punchline. This time though, people are everywhere, there are so many more students reacting to what’s going on, the teachers actually exist, it feels like a town that’s lived in, not just a set piece.

3.) The supporting cast is getting so much more exposure this time around. The choice to adapt more of the sister-inclusive chapters to San Hai was a great decision. Akane and Tomoko feel more like characters now. Seeing them, Nadeshiko and Hanako interact with characters that AREN’T family, finally, was fresh and entertaining. Even stuff with Kaede, Chizuru and Mari, characters we’re already familiar with, was chosen to show them in situations we haven’t seen animated. Even the cameos from Oomuro-ke characters every few episodes are fantastic.

4.) The progress in character relationships was unexpected and continues to be amazingly delightful. Namori herself has expressed that a rule to the series is that no relationship is explicit, only implied. The fact that some of these scenes got her blessing has to mean something in terms of her limits. Kyouko leaning her head against Yui, Akari visibly blushing at the thought of another date with Chinatsu, Sakurako’s dream about Himawari acting more like a lover than rival and Himawari herself becoming flustered at hearing about it. Some of this stuff goes a bit more beyond what the last two seasons did, moreso due to the fact that some of these are not played for any laughs. It’s something a lot of fans have wanted to see. More of the “Yuri” within “Yuru Yuri” without crossing boundaries.

I mean I know I’m just rambling but this season is far and beyond what I expected from a 3rd season of a long-running adaptation. I can only hope TYO Animation and the new staff either continue with OVAs or a future 4th season afterwards if this is what we’ll be getting.
