Honesty
It was a hot afternoon in June when I decided to look for merienda. I first bought banana cue for my mother who, at that time, was craving for one. Then, I immediately went to the store nearby and bought siomai (20 pesos for 5 pcs.) and palamig (5 pesos).
While the vendor was preparing for my merienda, I placed the exact amount onto the table. Thinking that I had a change, she gave me 25 pesos right away and finished preparing. I responded without any hesitation and told the vendor that I paid the exact amount.
The vendor’s companion laughed and said, “Buti na lang sinabi ni kuya.” (”Good thing he informed us.”)
The young lady beside me expressed her thoughts right away, “Mabuti na lang mabait si Kuya.” (”It’s good to know that you are kind.”)
I just smiled at them.
I was flattered that they commended me for being honest, but the situation just made me realize that something was not right.
Although I appreciated them, I was so sad that they were surprised by the act of kindness and honesty. It has left an idea that honesty isn’t usual. I am just happy that some people witnessed my act. Hopefully, I was able to influence them to spread honesty.
