Our remaining days in Tarija and South America were nostalgic. We took our last collectivo(public bus), visited our last market, pet our last street dog, and sat in the last plaza thinking about all the beautiful plazas we have seen along the way. We are truly grateful for the people we have met, the cultures we have embraced, and the incredible nature including all that it is home to. We are forever changed. Thank you!
Our last days in South America happened to coincide with the San Roque festival. There is an endless queue of chunchos(the dressed procession) rythmically clacking their wood instruments to the beat of a few drums and las Cañas(a long horn). San Roque is the patron saint of Tarija. It is said, he posthumously cured residents of leprosy. This explains the costume of being fully covered just as if they had leprosy.
Since Tupiza was our last small town before we left South America, we made sure to eat at their market, drink their fresh orange juice, consume too many empanadas(tucumanas). We also discovered what we like to call "street cake".
And then we took our LAST bus to Tarija. As you can tell, there were mixed emotions between the two of us.
Tupiza is very close to the Argentina border. The geography between Tupiza and Tilcara is similiar. We spent our days enjoying day hikes into the canyons nearby.

We went on a three day tour of southwestern Bolivia. We saw the most extreme and mind bending nature. Abandoned train cars, salt lake beds as far as the eyes could see, flamingos in red lagoons, screaming gysers with sulfur filling your nose, rocks in the shapes of trees and faces, and extreme desolation. It felt out of this world.
We didn´t spend much time in Potosi, but we do remember it being peculiarly placed on a hillside and its winding narrow roads. This city was once the largest and wealthiest cities in all of the Americas due to its silver mining. While we were here, they had a Celebration of the Immaculate Conception. We also visited the Tarapaya natural hot spring(it is also known as the Ojo del Inca- Eye of the Inca).
In Sucre, the other capital of Bolivia, we enjoyed the colonial architecture and its modernization attributed to mining nearby. While there, we visited the Cretaceous Park(Cal Orck´o). There are over 5,000 dinosaur footprints on the vertical layer. It gave a new understanding of just how big and alive these creatures once were. We also visited the small town of Tarabuco to enjoy its Sunday market. The streets were filled with the local Yampura people -their beautiful textiles and traditional clothing.
Alpaca Crossing
An hour or so walk from Sajama are hot springs. This is where we shameless went two days in a row. The environment here is pretty extreme. Not much in terms of flora and fauna can naturally exist at this elevation. Nonetheless, it is a beautiful place.

Sajama(also known as ALPACAgeddon) was an incredible experience. Probably the smallest town we stayed in all of South America. Overwhelmingly, there are more llamas and alpacas than people. Mountain K´isi K´isini and volcano Pomertape are divided between Chilean and Bolivian border to the west, and the ever empty Sajama is in the shadow of Bolivias tallest mountain- Snowy Sajama.
Mass takes place as people take turns climbing the hill with small replicas of their wants and dreams for this coming year in hopes that the virgin(or Pachamama-mother earth) will bless them. Each person hammers a rock from the hill as their family members watch, drink beer, set off little firecrackers, and give offerings of beer and coca leaves. The family bags their rocks, has them blessed, and takes them home in the hopes that they will carry with them the health and prosperity they desire.
After the multi-day entrada(entering parade) which consists of thousands of dancers and musicians dahncing for hours on end, the masses gather at the hillside where the virgin was seen.
