Lily was sure, with time, that the beating of her heart and heating of her cheeks would fade. But for now, in the rose-colored sheen of falling for someone, her ribs near rattled and she could feel her cheeks go rosy whenever James drew near.
It tended to creep up on her, that uncontrollable fondness, popping up unexpectedly not dissimilar to the way James himself had a tendency to. Saying yes to one date had quickly led to another, then another, until they were several dates and moony-eyed study sessions deep into….
Into whatever it was they were doing. Dating, apparently. “Girlfriend” was a new label to her, one that still had her feeling wiggly whenever James winked it proudly.
It was effortless and daunting all at once. The self-satisfied grin that James almost always seemed to be sporting certainly didn’t help matters.
Lily paired her blush with a teasing eye roll, studiously avoiding James’ ludicrous expression in favor of pushing her books into his arms. “Shove off,” she mumbled with a nudge.
Blush fading, she collected her composure. “Friends always do favors without expecting reciprocation, so it’s all above board.”
James would be lying if he said he didn’t feel on top of the world half the time. Even more so when he realized he had the affections of one Miss Lily Evans. It was the universe wrapping its arms around him and telling him he was worthy of a woman like her. Most days he didn’t believe it, swimming in the daze of liking someone but never for a second doing anything less than thanking his lucky stars.
With that type of giddiness came the habit of being a bit of a ham, always playing up just how much he enjoyed throwing out that they were more or less an item. “If you wish,” he said before making a sharp turn to go in the opposite direction, walking a good few steps before running back to her side once again. “Sorry, couldn’t do it. Too long without your presence and I might go into cardiac arrest.”
James didn’t bat an eyelash at the term ‘friends’, knowing perfectly well what was going on between them. If Lily wanted to call them friends for now, that would do him just fine. “Ah, right right of course. So as your friend who is a boy, I can do that. Great to know.” He laughed, slowly realizing that his class was very much in the other direction but he very much did not care. “So - busy later? I thought maybe we could go out. Together.”
