Being the clumsy little shit she always is, it really wasn’t all that surprising when Thalia had tripped and fell down a flight of stairs after leaving the Gryffindor common room earlier that day. In her fall, she’d managed to land on her arm hard enough to break the bone, which ultimately resulted in her being stuck in the infirmary until the healers could fix it. She was growing bored getting stuck in there, and looked up when she heard someone enter the room. “Thank god, I was about to lose my mind if I didn’t have someone to talk to.”

James was finally allowed to get out of bed, but since he was still not allowed to leave the hospital he took it upon himself to at least try by sneaking out. He has almost made it to the moving stairs when Slughorn caught him and sent him straight back to the hospital. Complaining under his breath he entered and closed the door behind him only to find Thalia there. “What the hell, Rawley, why are you here?”

“Trying but not succeeding.” She corrected with a laugh. “I mean they’re kind of the loves of your life. It’d be almost cruel for you to have not dreamt of them.” Emme teased before letting out a sigh. She brushed a few strands of hair away from his face as she settled in. “It’s probably always going to be a mess… we’re kind of messy… you and I.” She eventually said with a nod. “Stubborn, yes. Fool? Not the whole time.” Emme gave a little shrug as he continued to speak, a smile growing on her face the whole time. “I am.” She crinkled her nose with a laugh as she pulled away. “I’d say so. I take it you forgive me?”

“I shouldn’t have tried in the first place,” he said with a chuckle. Pointing out that they were the loves of his life was amusing to him but it got him wondering if Emmeline was also to be included on that list. “Would be nicer if that’s wasn’t the case.” James confessed, still wishing things would be more normal between them. “You don’t have to be so kind,” he laughed slowly as he carefully readjusted himself on the bed so it wouldn’t cause him more pain. “Yeah, I did a long time ago, I just had to accept it.”

“Oh…of course. Well…I do look good in yellow so thank goodness for that right?” She forced a laugh where she felt like she wanted to cry, but that was her problem because he’d never made her a single promise. “Strongly for anybody? Of course I have, i’m not heartless. I uh, Lorcan, I feel very strongly for. How um, this came on fast for you though, right?”

“Perfect, I’ll tell her all about that.” James said cheerily, completely missing out on how upset Pandora seemed. “Lorcan as in the half vampire Lorcan?” He wondered with a mischievous grin. “Good choice there, P, good choice.” At her questions he furrowed his brows, trying to recall how everything had started, but couldn’t. “Very, it’s not too weird though, can’t be.”

“You’re hilarious when you’re offended.” he said as he caught the quaffle in his hand and threw it right back at him. “Why exactly are we playing ball now?” 

James moved to the side right before it hit him and picked up his broom before making his way towards to the door. “Leave me alone, I have someone to meet.”

Tommy snorted because the Potter boy was really something else. At least he’d finally learnt how to wear clothes. “Because I can sense that you’re about to do something dumb as fuck and I’m here to prevent it before it even happens, Potter.”

“You can’t possibly care that much about my personal life to try to stop me. Who says my feelings are dumb as fuck anyways? Don’t be a rude git.” James scoffed, shaking his head as he made his way past him. “I’m just going to profess my love.”

“You’re crazy.” she decided with a roll of her eyes. “What the fuck, Potter? Are you high?” she said, sounding extremely irritated with the boy when he agreed to her stupid, and very obviously sarcastic suggestion to run away and marry. “Profess your love? What crap is this? Did Emmeline really fall for this bullshit when you tried it on her?” 

“Crazy for you.” Not even he believed it at that point but the feeling was still strong and prominent. “Yeah, what the fuck, me. I Can’t fight these feelings, don’t you understand?” His face feel momentarily at the mention of Emmeline. Why was everything still about Emmeline? “Why does she matter in this? This is about me and you and our imminent happy ever after.”

“I said a lot of stupid things too.” She replied softly, remembering how she’d pushed him away the last time they’d spoken. Her heart skipped a beat as she realized he was still holding her hand. Emme wanted to keep contact, if only to make sure he was still there and that he was real. “A few people? Like Sirius, Remus, and Peter?” She teased, if only to try and lighten the mood. “Were you… were you really gutted?” She’d been gutted by most of the things he’d said their last few meetings so to think he’d felt the same almost pleased her. “Even what I’d said about how I felt?” She countered, wondering if that had stuck. When he spoke once more, she let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. “Oh James.” Her gaze dropped as her cheeks heated up. Emme glanced up for a moment, tilting her head as she looked him over. With his hand still in hers, she leaned down to gingerly brush her lips against his.

“No, you were just trying to talk some sense into me, I don’t blame you for that.” James commented in a quiet tone, still feeling stupid for having taken that potion. “It’s quite obvious, isn’t it? he stated with a half smile. “They are my soulmates of sorts... and yes, when the potion wore off I was finally able to see things more clearly, even if it was all still a mess...” He began. “... And these past few days I’ve been thinking a lot of how much of a stubborn fool I’ve been.” He explained as honestly as possible. Had he moved on from everything that had happened like any other normal person then he probably wouldn’t be in the hospital, but could he really complain? In the end everything seemed to working out, and that became more clear when Emmeline got closer. “Are you really going to blush, it-” he would had mumbled out more nonsense had her lips not met his. Even in the hospital she had a way to shut him up, “does that mean you forgive me?”

“Nothing, I thought  you’d said something.” She replied with a shrug, her hand still in his. Any anger or frustration she’d felt about him, about their situation, had long since dissipated. Her brows furrowed as he shook his head. Was he rejecting her apology? Whatever the reason she didn’t have a chance to ask before he was speaking once more. “Have you been dreaming… of me?” Emme replied slowly, her cheeks heating up. It wasn’t so farfetched, after all… he had said her name without any prompting  earlier. To say this thrilled her was an understatement. When he smiled, her grin only grew larger. “What do you mean why am I here? We both said things although I’m not sure how much you remember…” She bit her lip. “Stop apologizing James, we’re never going to get anywhere if we spend all our time saying sorry.” She shrugged once more. “I’m here because I care about you. Because I like you… you and only you.”

“I’ve said a lot of stupid things lately, and I regret almost all of them.” James sighed, though keeping his half smile intact. He didn’t dare move his hand away from hers, having spent so much time pushing what he felt for her away had done more damage than good, so he was no longer interested in continuing that charade. “I’ve been dreaming of a few people, yeah, but mostly you... I think because I’ve been feeling so gutted about all the things I said and for fighting so hard to push you away,” he explained, almost shocking himself at how sincere and open with his feeling he was for once. “I remember everything, unfortunately,” he said with a chuckle, before cringing as the pain in his chest manifested itself. Her words managed to distract him, though, and he just looked tenderly at her as he finally accepted her words and let them take over everything else he had been feeling. “I promise it’s not all the potions in me talking but... I like you too, Emme, no reason to deny it anymore.”

Emme let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding when he spoke once more. “Nice?” She questioned, a confused look on her face. When he apologized, her brows furrowed. “I’m sorry too.” Was all she said at first, gently stroking the back of his hand with her thumb. When she caught his gaze, Emme could feel her heart melting. She’d forgotten just how much she’d missed him, the real him, until that moment. At his question, she couldn’t help but laugh. “Yes I’m real.” She stated, her voice soft as a smile appeared on her face. Emme gently rested a hand against his cheek, doing her best not to mess with any of his injuries. After a moment she leaned down to gingerly kiss his forehead. “Real enough for you?”

“What?” By the time she had asked he had already forgotten what he had said earlier. It was still nice to see her there though, to see her not hating him for what he had said. Her apology brought him some relief but he shook his head nevertheless, he had been in the wrong. In fact, he had been in the wrong since Halloween. “I just... I thought I was dreaming again.” James said in a low voice, closing his eyes for a slight moment as she placed a kiss on his forehead. A smiled instantly appeared on his features, for a moment he felt like everything was perhaps the way it had once been, but in his current state it was easy to misinterpret things. “Yeah, but why are you here? All those things I said... I- I don’t know why I took that potion. I was stupid and I’m really sorry.”

She’d left James fuming. If anything she was mad at herself for getting so worked up… well that and for being such an idiot about the whole thing. She’d tried to put it from her mind but it just kept eating away at her. Just as she’d worked up the courage to find him and try to talk things out, she’d gotten wind of the fact that he’d been hurt and was currently holed up in the hospital wing. Without hesitation she’d made her way there only to be told by the matron that he wasn’t ready for visitors. After some pleading and a forged note from a professor, the matron relented and let her in. The first couple of days he pretty much slept but she still managed to visit him between classes and at meal times, holding his hand and simply sitting there. By day three she was surprised to hear him speak and that he was speaking her name. “James?” She croaked before clearing her throat. “James, I’m here.” Her voice was a lot stronger the second time but still wavered. He was in a right awful state and it pained her to see him look so helpless.

James wasn’t expecting Emmeline’s voice to sound so clear in a dream. He even felt the warmth of her hand in his and for a moment he wondered if it was real. “Nice,” he mumbled out with a weak smile, still not daring to open his eyes in case it was in fact all a dream. His idiocracy was still finding a way to make itself present and not even his drugged mind could subdue the thoughts. “Sorry,” he said with a slight groan as he shook his head slowly before opening his eyes. Finally seeing Emmeline there felt both peaceful and nerve wracking, things he seldom felt. There were so many things to he wanted to say and apologize for but his mind rushed through it all a lot faster than his body could react, so he just sighed. “Are you real?”

Were people supposed to think about anything when half unconscious? Because even after he had made it to the hospital wing, James was still reliving all the idiotic things he had said and done since Gryffindor lost its first match. The beating the Whomping Willow gave him left behind some fractured ribs, a massive headache and a broken hand, but nothing Madam Pomfrey wasn’t able to fix with some hideously tasting potions. She ordered James to stay in the hospital for about a week (to his dismay) and he spent the first couple of days there sleeping. The rest was appreciated after everything that had happened but even in groggy mind all he could focus on were the things he had said to Emmeline the last time he had seen her. He preferred to sleep over having to be stuck to a bed with a feeling of uncertainty, and it was during one of those acts that he thought he dreamed of Emmeline being there. “...E-mme?”

As the effects of the potion Sirius had given him wore out, it became more and more difficult for James to focus or even stay awake. Everything he had been feeling prior to taking it, and everything he had said and done afterwards was finally making sense... and the results weren’t pretty. Never had he felt so embarrassed and stupid in his life, but instead of dealing with that problem, he went out to meet the others so they could help Remus with his transformation. He absentmindedly and quickly made his way to the Whomping Willow where he recognized Sirius standing far enough from it to not get hurt. “’Ey you,” he mumbled, still feeling out of sorts as he yawned. “Did Peter and Remus leave already? Am I late?” he wondered, looking up at the sky to see where the moon was. “And, I don’t know, but am I supposed to feel this awful after a love potion?” the question came out with more mumbles as he absent mindedly continued to approach the tree, forgetting all about the knot they were supposed to press to immobilize it.

Oscar was taken aback by the boy’s outrage. “I mean, I am not sure, they just hang out a lot. Okay, okay - but what is wrong? Why are you so angry?”

“Hanging out and dating are two completely different things.” he stated with a roll of his eyes. “I’m mad because I can feel my heart breaking, this can’t be happening right as I’m falling desperately in love with her.”

“But if everything else is true…. just don’t let it get to you, that’s all I’m saying.” he smiled. “We’ll beat the others and get that cup, don’t worry.” 

“What makes you think it will get to me? You are making me sound weak, Julian and believe it or not that’s fucking rude.” James stated with an unamused expression. “I know we will, why are you so concerned for me anyways?”

“Maybe I am, maybe I am not. I’m undercover.” she said, sticking her tongue out at him whilst his smile reminded her how much she ‘hated’ it. “I thought so too but then I realized it’s much more fun to pretend to hate you.”

“Undercover for what exactly? You are just sparking my interest and now I’m bound to pester you until you explain what you are on about.” He commented with a smile. “No it’s not, Did that mystery Slytherin boy put you up to this?”

Marlene swallowed thickly, nodding. She knew James was right, Mason would have died for anyone, just like she would. “I just was so sick of everyone doing nothing. I wanted him to come home.” She admitted quietly, it was the most open she’d been about her loss in a long while, probably since a few weeks after he’d died and she shut down. As James hugged her, she clung tightly to him, she just needed someone to hold her together for a little bit, she was tired of being strong. “I know I keep pushing them away, but I don’t know how to let them help. I don’t want the pity and I don’t want to be weak, I’m the strong one. I’m independent and fearless, not…not this. Not a crying mess.”

James nodded along, Mason’s disappearance had not been handled at all correctly and it was difficult to accept all the pain it had brought. “Everyone wanted him home, and you did something which is far more than anyone could have asked for.” He held on to her a little longer, only pulling away after she spoke.“You are one of the strongest, if not the strongest girl I know, Marls... and this isn’t me attempting to make you feel better, that is a fact. I’ve grown with you and I have seen what you have gone through and how life has shaped you,” he started still keeping his hands on his shoulders as he looked into her eyes. “No one here pities you and damn whoever thinks you are weak... just remember that even the strongest of people are allowed to feel, and it’s okay to cry.”
