Last week, my boyfriend and I visited an Egyptian museum here in Curitiba, the Museu Egípcio e Rosacruz – Tutankhamon. The space has a broad collection of artifacts and faithful replicas from their daily life, religious beliefs, and funerary traditions. It really amazes me how detailed these objects (and places) were. Such impressive work! There were also some interesting items, like a piece used by the pharaó to get rid of flies, and a “papyrus smoother”.

We also saw one of the oldest known games in the world, called Senet. It looks like a simple race game but carries deep symbolic meaning – they say the game was a metaphor to overcome evil forces that would block you from getting to the underworld. Apparently, you can even play this game nowadays!

Even animals had their mummy version!

The museum also have a whole section about hieroglyphs, telling the story about the Rosetta stone, and how scholars decoded them over time. A fun fact we learned:

The names of members of the Egyptian royal family were written inside a symbol that we now know as a cartouche. This name was given by French soldiers who associated the shape of the symbol with the cartridges of the weapons they carried in the 18th century.

There’s also a permanent exhibition for Tutankhamon, showcasing replicas of objects found in the tomb of the Pharaoh. You could visit a small room imitating his chamber, where they explain the images in the walls.

And, most impressively, they also have an authentic mummy from ancient Egypt that’s been part of the collection since 1995! The only one in Brazil! Her name was Tothmea, and apparently she was a singer, which really resonates with me, as a karaoke fan myself 😉 Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take selfies with her (and no other picture, actually).
