From the moment, Jude was born the urge to be perfect only grew. As she got older, the young Moulin woman was painfully aware of how beautiful everyone thought her mother was and each story Diana told her was about her glory days as a cheerleader at Fallbrook High and meeting the “love of her life” at the young age of sixteen.

There was something about school, Jude loved and it was the homework. Learning was one of her favorite things to do and she spent a lot of her time trying to get to know more and more because if she couldn’t be breathtakingly beautiful like her mother than she would use her intelligence to be the best.

Jude was the girl most always caught with her nose between a book and each week it was a new one. The only reason people were aware of who she was had been because of the girls she had become friends with in Kindergarten – Emmaline Valentine and Fawn Seigert. 

She knew she didn’t fit in with the two girls she walked around school with and it was always obvious by the looks she got from everyone else that always had her clenching her books a little tighter to chest as if it was going to suck her into whatever world she had started to read about. 

Nothing was worse than Fawn always lending a helping hand, at least what she thought was helpful. Each boy that Jude seemed to think was cute, her best friend was trying to push her into talking to and every single time the boy would make comments as soon as Fawn left about how no one would ever look in Jude’s direction as long as she was with her. 

It was something Jude did her best to bury because she knew that Fawn wanted to help get her out of her shell but truthfully being compared to her best friends and her mother, it was too much for the young woman to try and throw herself into sharks. 

It didn’t help that her family life was falling apart through all of this, the late night arguments her parents would have after they thought their kids went to bed and the hatred that seemed to grow between them to the point where her father packed up and left the house which was not something she ever talked to anyone about because she didn’t want to admit that her father was the parent that made her stay sane.

There was one single time Jude exploded and it was the night of prom after weeks of Fawn hyping her up and making her believe that she could be crowned prom queen and as Jude stood in the crowd with everyone else as Fawn was announced as prom queen she pulled her arm away from her best friend and told her to stop butting her nose into her business. 

She stomped out of prom and into the arms of the nearest person who shockingly didn’t reject her and as she contained that power she lost it immediately after. For three weeks, Jude shut herself into her room and didn’t come out nor did she answer her phone because not only had she thought maybe for the first time in her life people would see her and it turned out all she was meant to be was the side character in every story in her life. 

Of course, during those three weeks, Jude indeed attended school but she avoided the world especially because she knew the kid she hooked up with after prom began to brag about it. It was also something she never talked to her best friends about instead she laughed it off and never touched the subject again. 

Finally, graduation came and she was free from the pressures of being perfect in high school and it was the beginning of the road of her becoming her own person… hopefully. 

PRESENT

Jude never brought up the incident at prom again after that and ended up moving in with Fawn into a downtown apartment a few years into saving up money for it.

She had started attending college shortly after high school and met a boy named Soo Kang and the two of them instantly became friends. She values his friendship because for the first time in her life she doesn’t have to pretend to be perfect around him.

Her mother being a member at the country club, she met Christina Kennedy and the woman hired her as her assistant which is something she loves to do. 

It took her two years to get her degree in liberal arts and then she immediately started working towards her bachelors.

She’s now in her last semester of college and she’s not quite sure she’s ready to stop.

The first thing Milo ever wrote a song about was the ocean. In retrospect, some might say it was pretty ironic because the thought of it still haunted his family to this day. It was a beautiful piece about the brother he hadn’t been old enough to remember; the meaning of it was one only Milo knew because even of the ocean some members of his family still stayed away. It wasn’t until an evening when he headed towards his and Jack’s shared room and he heard his mom crying while listening to it that Milo realized what music could do for others, not just himself. In the present, he looked at Jude and smiled. It was the usual easy, close lipped, but happy smile that she pulled out of him when they spent time together. He had to ground his feet when he watched her practically jump out of her seat and squeal with excitement. He had to adjust his hearing aid. “Someone I’m working on the soundtrack with has a friend at a publishing company in New York.” He explained the favor he cashed in on when people turned to look at the commotion and a few eyebrows and smiles came their way as they all, including Milo, watched Jude. He realized then that he couldn’t get enough of her. It was because Milo hoped people would have that same reaction to his art once day. Milo watched her face go from excitement to disbelief to pure bliss and as her happiness grew so did his smile. He took a step towards her and pressed his hands on her shoulders so she would sit still and take a good look at the book. He was still standing when he leaned over Jude, eyes on the illustration and the gold foiling. He thought that if he looked at it from that angle he might see what she saw but, like music, books were personal. Each experience unique to the individual. He wrapped his arms around her and gave her that hug. He didn’t mean to press his cheek against hers, but her happiness was intoxicating and for a moment he could have sworn that it rubbed off on him as he pulled away. He would laugh and tell her to relax, but he didn’t see her like that often. “Which one’s the massive tampon?” Milo pulled a chair and sat down. His eyes moved from Jude to the cover and back expectantly.

Jude was memorized by the illustrations on the cover of the book in her hands. Ever since she had seen the special editions of the acotar series she wanted a copy of her own so the fact she was holding the first book in her hands, it was surreal. There were a lot of things the young woman had done her life to make her feel like she didn’t deserve moments such as this one. “You —” her eyes lifted up from the cover for a second to look at Milo and in that moment it was hard for her to understand why he spent time with her like this and did these nice things for her. And being the emotional person she was, it was getting harder for her to hold back the tears that were starting to build up and the more she tried to hold it back the harder it felt to swallow. Her fingers tapped against the book as she nodded her head, looking back down at it as she kept the smile spread along her features. “Thank you,” she said a little softer this time, the excitement starting to die down and the fact it had been so long since someone had done something nice for her and not to because of Fawn. She didn’t remove her eyes from the cover of the book as his hands reached out to settle her back into her seat, it dawned her in that moment they were in the book cafe and she had screamed inside of that building. Her eyes darting up for a few seconds to glance around to see if anyone was looking over at them and if they had been they certainly weren’t now. There weren’t two people more in this world that she loved more than Fawn and Emmi but she knew ever since prom that the moment Jude snapped about Fawn’s helpfulness that it changed everything between her and one of her long time friends. If she hadn’t indeed been so insecure about herself would she have been a better person. Suddenly holding this book in her hand made her feel like she was unworthy of the kind gift, that whatever Milo had to do to get it would ultimately be something he regretted. She almost didn’t realize he had leaned down and hugged her until his cheek touched hers. She turned her head to look up at him as a few tears dropped from her eyes, a little laugh leaving her eyes as he shifted to move to sit down across from her. Raising her hand, the brunette wiped the tears from her eyes. “You could have warned me that you were going to make me cry,” she smiled through the tears as she looked back down at the cover, carefully putting the book down on the table as she pointed to the person with the mask on their face. “That’s tampon,” she chuckled as she raised her eyes up towards him. “It’s a lot to dig into,” she breathed in. “This is probably the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me,” she cleared her throat, a little embarrassed about her emotions. “Kind of stupid to cry over but... Thank you again.”

Emmi leaned into the pillows on her bed, even though she now had her own house she still loved coming back to what felt like her childhood bedroom at her parent’s house. They didn’t touch the kids rooms as they moved out and a lot of her favorite memories were in those four walls with her best friends. She had been listening to some new music Fawn was working on and telling her how she should show Milo because he’d love it when Jude burst in, practically gasping for air. Emmi’s eyes went doe-like for a moment before easing into a giggle. “Oh! Him.” She waved Jude over to take her rightful spot on the big bed and hope neither of them would see her blush. She knew they’d assume her cheeks flushed for a different reason than they had and Emmi wasn’t in the mood to explain how she felt like Elio could see right through her happy front. She didn’t know he was going to be in parent’s house when she invited them for a girl’s night to plan a girl’s trip. “It’s nothing, he’s helping my dad renovate things downstairs. I think he’s just feeling a little lonely and wants someone around.” She said about her dad before looking at Fawn who had been quieter than normal since she brought up her brother.

It was almost as if Fawn had an invisible camera running at all times. Incredibly in control of her reactions and emotions at all times. Unless of course, she and Jude were in a screaming match about something they could have likely easily resolved otherwise. Fawn’s gaze immediately went over to her roommate as she slowly sat up to tilt her her, lips poked out and shoulders lifting and dropping quickly in a shrug. “I’m sorry, I’ll be sure to be on Elio watch the next time I come in..” the sarcasm was thick in her voice like custard, eyes rolling as she continued scrolling through her phone before finally getting bored and tossing the device to the side. It wasn’t until she’d finally caught a glimpse of the red tint on Emmi’s cheeks that her eyebrows raised and she reached out to give her friend a gentle poke to the arm. “So, what color blush is that? It’s very.. pigmented..” She was the queen of stating the obvious without actually doing so. Thinking of Milo wasn’t something she enjoyed. The thought either angered her or brought her a great deal of joy and she didn’t like being unsure of which emotion to grasp at.

Parting her lips to say something to Emmi commenting about Elio but she closed her mouth the second the sarcasm left Fawn’s lips. Somehow with a few simple words the giddy high she had been on crashed. She slipped the strap of her bag off her shoulder and walked over towards the desk, placing her bag on the chair as she let her eyes focus on it for a minute as she thought about the special edition copy of her favorite book was in. She turned her head to look over at Fawn and Emmi when the leader of the group pointed out the shade of pink that came along their friend’s cheeks when Jude had brought up Elio. She walked over and laid herself down on the other side of Emmi, turning her head to look over at her as she tucked her hand between her knees and the other hand under the side of her head. The girl who had walked into the room had been tucked away into the background once again and the one she normally was in the presence of Fawn came out to resume her role. @emmivalentine​

Ever since Jude moved out to be on her own, Diana felt a little piece of herself missing. So naturally she’d gone over to not only visit her daughter and drop off some groceries for her. Her friend Fawn reminded her so much of her younger self that it was concerning at times, but it didn’t bother her because Jude remained true to herself even throughout their fallouts. Eyes falling on her daughter in complete silence for a moment, she let out a stressed sigh and leaned back onto the couch, shaking her head. “Can you put that thing down for one minute and have a conversation with your mother, Jude? Is that too much to ask?”

Jude brushed her tongue along her lower lip as she put the device face down onto the arm of the couch, her eyes focusing on the woman in front of her. Sometimes a part of her wondered if her mother would have been happier if Fawn was her daughter and there was that small voice in the back of her head informing her that was the only reason her mother had paid a visit. She placed her hands on her lap as she cleared her throat. “Sorry,” she swallowed. “Go ahead. What did you need? Everything okay? Is it Jedd again?”

Milo knew that Fawn and Jude were Emmaline’s best friends, but it was easy to get to know them. He had been a grade ahead of them in school and they were always at the house growing up, being loud and laughing up and down the stairs like girls do for as long as he could remember. As a homebody, Milo was always somewhere in the background. He saw how their operation worked. Fawn was clearly the leader who demanded attention without having to ask for it, Emmi the happy girl next door everyone liked, and Jude the sweet and reserved girl who had to run to keep up. They were his sister’s friends, but ever since his return to Fallbrook nearly two years ago he started talking more and more with Jude until they developed their own friendship apart from the group. He ran into her at Moore’s Book Cafe one day and that became their meeting place ever since. Milo pushed through the door, gave a nod to the barista at the front, and spotted the brunette in the back at the usual spot. This time he had something in his hand and handed it to her the moment her eyes met his. “Found you something.”

Jude had a book in her hand, looking at the description on the back of it. It was another one of Sarah J. Maas books and a part of her worried about starting this one so soon after she finished the acotar series. Five books, a lot of tears, squealing, and the five stages of grief bookworms went through when they finished a really good series. She pressed her lips into a thin line as she debated whether or not she should start another one of this author’s series because the last one almost ruined her life. Truthfully, books were her only escape and she may have gotten too entangled in the fiction of it all but sometimes it felt better than being her for a while especially since it wasn’t as if anyone would certainly miss her if she disappeared for a month straight to read a book or more. She turned her head to look over her shoulder to see Milo behind her. Milo and her friendship somehow blossomed throughout the last two years since he came home to Fallbrook. It was actually kind of nice to have someone who understood what it was like to find a really good book and fall in love with it. He was also the first boy man that she ever gotten close to that wasn’t Soo and of course she would be lying if she never had those look at my best friend’s older brother feelings but it was kind of impossible when Emmi had so many cute brothers. “You —” her eyes dropped to the special edition a court of thorns and roses book in his hand, a scream... an actual scream left her mouth. It was one of those excited screams that had the whole cafe stopping to stare at her, her hands raising to her mouth. “Shit, I... Shit.” She put her hands out, only letting them hover over the edition for a second. “Oh my God, Milo...” If she hadn’t been excited out of her fucking mind she probably would have started crying and paying a little more attention to the flutter that happened in her chest. She reached out and took the book from him. “Sorry, sorry.” She ended up saying after realizing she didn’t apologize for screaming so close to him. “I just.. It’s Tamlin and Feyre on the cover even though he’s a massive tampon I’m so... God, I could just...  hug you!”

Jude had been on and off the phone with one of the event coordinators for the country club and the bride who came from Ohio to get married in the southern small town her grandmother grew up in was raging over something the people she hired to cater the event did. Somehow it was supposed to be Christina’s problem. Groaning, the brunette walked over and plopped herself down onto the couch, glancing over at her mother when she realized she was talking about something. “Wait what? I — sorry... I wasn’t listening.”

Jude adjusted the strap of her bag over her shoulder, her bluetooth ear piece being the only thing she can hear as she opens the front door to the Valentine house since that’s where Emmi wanted to meet but didn’t really tell them why. “Come on, Maurice. You know if you get this order wrong that Miss Kennedy won’t only own my ass but your  — “ her words choked in the back of her throat, a strangled sound leaving her in its place as her eyes fell upon Elio Alava standing in the kitchen, drinking a lemonade. As he glanced over at her, Jude squeaked and darted to the stairs, practically running up them and tripping over every step. “Shit, I gotta,” she reached up and hung up the phone. Gasping, the brunette finally reached Emmi’s door and pushed it open, gawking at Fawn and her laying casually on the bed. “Was anyone going to inform me that Elio Alava is in this house!?”
