Character creation â13 basic elements you have to take into account when creating a main characterâ.
1. The name of your character MATTERS
Whatever name you give them, it will live forever in your readerâs mind. So it has to sound cool, has to have some sort of meaning, and has to be relevant for your character.Â
Itâs your MC card of presenation, so choose something that has a special meaning for them.Â
This is important because it will also set down the niche of who youâre directing towards the story. It also helps to set down the tone of the narration.Â
3. The image, but not the loooks
The physical description is something that itâs personal to the writer. Some prefer to have a clear picture, and others donât. BUT, the image that your character shows to the world is very important.
This leads to whatâs called âPrinciple of Artificialityâ.Â
4. Make up, clothes and hair
As all of us, your character is trying to build a personality; and all these elements can be very helpful when trying to shape the image, or to exteriorize the personality.Â
Keep in mind that whatâs shown is important, but the lack of things also has a meaning.
Every single detail has a meaning!!
Also, play with the social conventions.
Gestures, how the character interacts physically with the world.
Everyone has a gesture or a trick that defines them, so your character should also have one. How they move and interact with the other characters is also important.Â
The creation of the image that they are trying to show to the world, and that youâre creating, has to be personal and unique.
Please, give your character a brain. Make them think, ask questions. They have to stand for something.Â
9. Make them interestingÂ
Give them hobbies, a backstory (that you do NOT to info dumb to your reader) that has shapped them into who they are now.
I donât care if weâre talking about the Fey High Lord of Idonâtcarewhere, make them make mistakes, to be wrong about something, to have prejudices, to be a little selfich, to be bad at something.Â
They have to be approachable.
11. They have to be carismatic
Your character has to make your reader fall in love with them, so take out that stake from their butt, and let them be *charming*.
12. This can be a little controversial but....
Pour a little bit of yourself in your characters. By doing this, youâre giving to your reader a piece of reality whichâs gonna make them feel more connecter to the characters.
13. HAVE FUN WITH THEM!!!
Youâre gonna spend a lot of time with them, so you have to make sure that theyâre interesting to you, that youâre having the time of your life writing them.
This is your baby, so love them!
