Sticks looked around again, before turning back to him. “Am I . . . are you turning me into a robot?”
“No.” His answer came immediately, more serious than Sticks had ever heard him. He appeared to catch himself, before continuing in a softer tone. “This isn’t . . . I’m sorry for what happened. For leaving you behind. I wanted a way for you to see our friends.” He paused, his voice dropping softer still. “Even if they’re just echoes now.”
She blinked, and looked to the table behind him. Her eyes went wide.
Tails, Amy, and Knuckles sat there, watching her. Waiting for her. Looking just like they had before things went bad.
They flickered slightly, as though a television station that wasn’t tuned in completely. Knuckles in particular was a little staticy.
But they were here. (Kind of.)
“You’re not a prisoner,” Sonic said, his voice soft. “Anytime you want to leave, all you have to do is think about it.” A little smile curled his lips. “And anytime you want to come, all you have to do it put the device on. It’s a direct connection to the SonNet. To this little mind space. Just for us.”
Sticks stared at him for a long moment. She didn’t want to believe him.
“Why?” she asked instead, her voice strained. “You turned back into Robo-Sonic. The line turned red. You’re not you anymore.”
He seemed to contemplate this, before giving a half shrug. “I’m not. And I am. I’m both, and neither. It’s hard to explain.”
