Episode: "The Cost Of Living"
In this episode, Eko dies. A friend of mine (M.M.) had mentioned he thought the black smoke represented Satan. (So there’s his credit for that thought.) But now, it’s my turn to take his thought and run with it.
The smoke is Satan indeed. According to the bible, Satan comes in many forms. For example, we all know the story of Adam and Eve. He came forth as a serpent and convinced Eve to eat what she was forbidden from eating. The devil is realistic, convincing, and quite clever in his ways.
Satan came to Eko in the form of Yemi, is younger brother who died and who’s body was actually found on the island. When Yemi came to him in dreams, he followed what he was told. When actually faced to his dead brother, he was asked to confess. When he did not repent, and gave an explanation for his life, he was told "You speak to me as though I were your brother." With those words that struck Eko with pain, Yemi then vanished.
The devil comes in many forms, perhaps even in a form resembling Yemi’s once in-tact physical state.
"I do not ask forgiveness father, for I have not sinned," with these words, Eko tossed away whatever holiness he had left with him. His sins, his staff with scripture carved onto it. That’s why the Devil came back in the form of the smoke, and was able to kill him. Without the power of Christ, he was just as vulnerable to such a death. Possibly even such an afterlife. That part I suppose we’ll never know. Perhaps it’s all just food for thought.
Side Note: Though I do not think Eko deserved the fate he was so given, in the eyes of the holy Eko died for being the opposite; unholy. I think most of what he did within his life had enough reasoning and purpose to be dismissed as sin. However, I am no holy individual. Though Eko was one of my favorites, and he died during this episode, this is still one of my most favorite episodes so far.
