Julia Simon has been passionate about painting since she was a child. Her parents, a stay at home mom and a father who was a professor at the local University, raised her in their family home in Suffix Mills. They weren’t rich by any means but they were comfortable so she never missed a meal and always had new clothes for each school year. Her parents supported her dreams, they sent her to summer camps that revolved around Art and creativity, and they made sure she always had extra canvases and an array of paints at her disposal.
Julia's father passed away when she was in 10th grade. They said it was a rare case, that he was healthy and shouldn’t have had a heart attack at his young age. The only thing he left behind was chaos. He had a gambling addiction that left them in a hole. The money they had saved for her to go to college had been spent and upon looking into their finances her mother discovered that they were thousands in debt. When the funds from his 401K came through they were able to settle some of the debts. Thankfully their home was paid off so it was one less thing for them to worry about.
Julia worked hard in school, though she had been spending more time partying with the outcasts than studying. She had dreams to go to the Savannah College of Art and Design so she knew she would need to keep a good average but what really mattered was her art. Julia couldn't afford to go so she applied for an assistance program, unfortunately they didn't have any more spots open for the year she graduated but she was invited to apply for the next term and was accepted. Julia was so excited to start her career but that all went away when she realized she was pregnant at 19.
She didn’t know if she wanted to keep the baby, she wasn’t sure if she could give up everything she had been working towards. She had not been romantically involved with the father of the baby so she wasn’t sure if he would stick around to help raise her. Yes, Her. The baby was a girl, and when Julia found out she made the choice to keep her, who knew that’s all it would take. With the help of the baby's father she was able to raise the child and all the while worked on her art and went to school part time.
She wasn't able to go to the school that she dreamed of but she was able to attend Heartsdale University and finally received her bachelors. Julia is now the art teacher at the local High School and is raising her daughter Alice in the same home that she was raised in.
