UNDER PRESSURE –requested by anonymous
Now that I’m reading The Magician’s Land I can’t believe that nobody (to my knowledge) has written a Professor AU yet? But like, set in Brakebills, not in the real world, ‘cause that’s way less fun.
Without going into too much detail I can see
Quentin teaching Minor Mendings like he does in the books. He’s kinda awkward, albeit in an adorable way, and takes some time to get used to the job, but the kids like him anyway (and like to tease him good-naturedly.)
Eliot most certainly teaches Mixology. He’s an incredibly lax and careless teacher, and all of his students just plain adore him - he probably receives multiple warnings from Henry over the course of his tenure.
Julia is a Knowledge teacher with a focus on Meta-Composition; very prim and proper, all about intimately acquainting her students with magical theory. She’s enthusiastic and genuinely cares about her pupils advancing.
Alice teaches classes on Phosphoromancy and Pyromancy and does tons of field research. Margo and Alice end up working a lot together (and maybe more~) since Margo teaches Cryomancy. Once in a while they even combine their classes.
Kady teaches something nonthreatening like Flight, but secretly starts an underground club where she teaches any student who’s willing Battle Magic. The faculty never finds out because she’s that good (but she also makes everyone sign magical NDAs.)
Penny teaches a general class like Astronomy, and does one-on-one work with any Traveler they get (which isn’t all that many, because Traveler’s are fucking rare.) In a more counseling function, he helps Physic students control the voices in their head (’cause they sure drove him crazy for the longest time.)
And apart from that, stuff like faculty parties and living in adjacent quarters is just full of ample opportunities.

random Magicians book facts:
Quentin tries and fails to fly to the moon as his senior thesis
the battle magic is home-brewed by Alice and Penny instead of learning it from the hedge witches. Alice and Penny base all the spells on Dungeons and Dragons spells because they’re nerds
Quentin does a stint as a Brakebills professor, and he loves teaching and mentoring kids who’re fucked up in the same way he once was
Margo (whose name is Janet in the books) wrote the Fillorian constitution and is so good at Fillorian geopolitics that Q calls her Fillory Clinton
Julia becomes first queen of Fillory (Alice being niffin-ed out at the time) and she’s very popular. when she comes into her god powers she becomes 7 feet tall and much more ethereal than in the show
it’s hard for Josh to get spells to work, but once he does they’re super powerful
the character named Fen in the books is nothing like show!Fen, but book!Fen is a lesbian so like…time to give the people what they want, sera gamble
Quentin’s middle name is Makepeace
Julia and Penny in the last ep *O* but why do they get interrupted every time ;___; Hymen was funny but also, spoke some words of truth and I kinda really liked that push - sometimes, you gotta make others realize some stuff they never thought about. hope he comes back in s5 :)
Okay so i totally didn’t see this in my asks till now but yes!! Julia actually kissed him!!!
Now honestly, yeah, i think that Hymen did make a point about them both being selfless martyrs all the time. Which by itself is an obvious and bland statement, but given that julia/penny23 are still so new to each other gives them even more footing of “okay, we could actually work in this timeline too”. just like the goddess/traveler not fitting in with normal magicians comparison made me happy too.
But anyway.. not sure I want Hymen back, he’s kind of a racist/sexist/homophobic creeper, but yeah. Sometimes he can be an interesting comedic plot device.
thank you for the ask though?!?!?! <3
not even gonna lie, i was expecting julia to be marinas future wife with the whole “it didnt work out in my timeline so im gonna do better on this one” and then i would get a poly couple between marina/julia/penny like. even 406 was a good ep for some penny/marina bonding. they’d be like arielle/eliot. i was robbed
“ that’s the only thing i ever got right. ”
So, matriarchy, huh?
Well, I’d be happier if she stayed.
Then: 3x11 | Now: 4x11.
i think part of what made me so sad about s1 quentin/alice this episode is that it’s probably the first time in like, two seasons that someone was genuinely happy to see her, and she knows it.
like, is it any wonder that she was so caught off guard by this normal, gentle, sweet boy talking to her like she was just a normal, gentle, sweet girl? like she hadn’t been shattered and glued back together wrong?
there’s just something so innocent in those interactions, and i think he honestly helped her remember something about herself without even realizing it—not the fact that she loved him, exactly, but the fact that she deserved to be loved, that she’s still capable of receiving and accepting that love.
fen and pickwick getting unreasonably angry at josh for not knowing how to play the bear game was incredibly true to real life representation of trying to explain a cherished childhood game to friends who have no clue what the fuck you’re talking about lmfao
