incredible that will's curse dictated that those who loved him would die, and yet those who loved him the most never did. not in his lifetime at least, and not for a long time after. jem was always meant to die, and yet still he lives a century and a half later. and tessa, while she was always going to be immortal, should never have been able to carry that life farther into a next generation, and yet she was able to spark new life with will. it's all continuity and perpetuity and new beginnings and, in everything filled with love that surrounds will, the very oppostite of death.

Everything's changed since Polites

I couldn't help but notice that in Monster Odysseus puts himself amongst ruthless characters like Polyphemus, Circe and Poseidon - he recalls the storming of Troy and the plan he had hatched to conquer it. Being cruel and without mercy is nothing new to him. When he sings after learning the prophecy from Tiresias he has already been ruthless, he's just embracing once again the monster he had put to sleep, that had advised him to build the Trojan horse, that had opened his hand when he held Astyanax's body over the walls of Troy. He's conscious of that, of being capable of merciless actions just like the wronged cyclops, the wrathful god of the sea and the betrayed witch. And do you know who's also conscious of this? His comrades. They saw during the war what Odysseus was capable of and they suspected, to say the least, that Polites was what kept him sane. Human. Polites was the kind voice that lulled his monster to sleep when Troy was finally razed to the ground and atrocious, pitiless courses of action were no longer necessary. With Polites's death, Odysseus's darker side was once again able to roam free and his crew started being suspicious of him - they really didn't have the right at that time, but we did see how the story ends. Everything's changed since Polites.

Yeah, I know that this is how the story is supposed to go because otherwise we wouldn't have had the Odissey to begin with, but let's be real for a sec.

Penelope wasn't expected to wait for Odysseus. 108 suitors roamed inside the walls of her palace and everybody was fine with that - how long could a kingdom survive without a king? She had to remarry, not a soul was going to speak against it. So how come Odysseus knew that she was going to reject them? Would you dare hoping - betting, even - that your partner is still waiting for you to come back after 20 years? Odysseus could have thrown the towel already. Why would he think that Penelope wasn't going to believe him dead after every other king had returned to home ten years prior? Why would he think that she wasn't going to give Ithaca a new ruler, even though she might have loved him still? He could have said to himself "aight, it's time for the both of us to go on". Yes, he had to see Telemachus again - of course he had - but let's not pretend that he wasn't all the same eager to meet his faithful wife. And why was Penelope faithful? Where did she find the conviction that her husband was going to come back? That he wasn't going to fall in love with another woman on some godforsaken island and decide to stay there? Mind, we're not speaking about a few months of distance, a year, maybe two - twenty years passed and Odysseus knew that she'd been waiting, waiting, for love...

He came back because he had to make it right by her. He knew. What moved him forward was not only the love he held for her but the awareness of the space Penelope had left for him, and that was only his to occupy. And Penelope knew to keep it empty because he was going to return.

The sheer faith that the two of them have in the fact that no matter how long, they've been missed, longed for by their partner, awaited, even... maybe it's just me, but it drives me nuts.

Can we talk about how heartwarming it is to hear Hermes call Odysseus his "friend" so naturally multiple times during Epic, in comparison to Athena's "We'll se where it ends" and "I'm not looking for a friend"?
