Don’t live for the weekends. Don’t write off things you’re unsure of. Don’t mistake comfort for love. Don’t mistake attention for love. And most importantly, don’t believe anyone who says they don’t have time to see you, because there’s no such thing as being too busy for something you care about.

Because we let things go too far and then slammed on the brakes when the light was still green. And now we’ll never know if it could have been great or just how great it would have been. And I wish we ended it while you were still good memories instead of bad tastes.”

It’s important not to take things personally because sometimes people hate you just because the people they like don’t. And sometimes people push you away just because they’re afraid of what will happen if you get too close. And sometimes people leave because they were never right for you in the first place and they just happened to realize it first.
The more confident you are in something, the more it hurts when you’re wrong. Which slowly makes us reluctant to trust anything- even our own gut feelings. Because when you’re sure of something and it doesn’t happen how you thought, it feels like you betrayed yourself. “How could I be so wrong?” These expectations and the hope that we gave ourselves- we did that, we gave ourselves all this hope when we shouldn’t have, and then we got hurt. So subconsciously we won’t let ourselves have that much hope the next time. That’s how getting hurt slowly destroys us. We get less and less optimistic and hopeful the more we get hurt. But no matter what, we can’t let ourselves get destroyed like that, we have to bounce back. Even if we never come completely back each time.
Sometimes you fall in love with people you don’t think you’re going to fall in love with. And the lesson from that is give everyone a chance, maybe? And sometimes you fall in love with people you don’t want to fall in love with and the lesson from that is it’s ok if you’ve made a mistake and ended up with the wrong person and got hurt. Because sometimes it’s not our fault who we love.
You need someone who wants to be there when it’s messy and when it’s hard, not just when it’s fun and when it’s convenient. And you need someone who chooses you when it might not be the easiest choice. And you need someone who would rather do nothing with you than anything in the world with someone else.
Don’t forget this
Did you ever leave someone and look back a little later on and realize you were always way too good for them? and it seems so fucking obvious now and you’re in awe that you never saw it before? But the reason you never realized it is because it took leaving. Because sometimes you have to remove yourself from the situation to see how bad it was. And things take some time to sink in, but there’s also a lot of smoke and mirrors and chemicals in your brain (I think they call it love?) that prevent you from seeing it right away, even if other people can. So listen to your friends, maybe. But also, know that you’re not crazy for making what might seem like a bold or random or irrational choice to leave, because sometimes things don’t make sense right away, but when they do, they make so much sense.
One day you’ll meet someone and everything will just make sense. Why every other relationship didn’t work out, why no one else was ever good enough, why you’ve always felt like something was missing. Why that one breakup didn’t hurt as bad as it should have and why you let that other one get to you way too much. Every piece you’ve ever wanted and every piece you didn’t even know you needed will suddenly be there and everything will feel like it’s finally coming together the way that it should. And there are so many people who have found this person who will read this and completely understand. So if this sounds fake, impossible, or unrealistic to you, it’s just because you’re not one of them yet.
