Just a Name

I had a hard time finding a way to express this work which represents a sensitive topic and a form of ethnic or religious discrimination. Many have asked me to change my name because it is the same name as the former dictator of Iraq. Many groups have used this name association to discriminate against me in Iraq and outside of Iraq as well. Unfortunately, our name is one of the characteristics that we are born with and we don’t have a choice in that decision. With that in mind, it is even more difficult for an artist who is known because of his name and his artwork and then is brushed aside or ignored because of their name. Therefore, I have borrowed the photo of the dictator and put my image instead of him during his most vulnerable moment (when he is about to be executed by hanging). Ironically, it is a sign of equality that I find myself in because of the hatred among some people because of a name someone is born with. This has put me in a precarious position and has caused me a great deal of pain. It is a form of pain at the hands of many.
