“About Us”

           The night I met Derek Lewis was the night I became the man I am today. He completely changed my outlook on life. I’d been on the downlow since high school but I came out after being in a relationship with Derek for only six months. Those six months turned into five years and while I thought we were doing okay; he didn’t feel the same. I found out he’d been spending time with someone else and had been lying to me about hanging out with his friends. When I pressed him on it, he admitted that he’d been cheating on me for over a month. I was beyond devastated. I became broken and bitter and someone I didn’t recognize every time I looked at myself in the mirror. I needed to get back to being me but for a time, I didn’t know how. It wasn’t until Derek texted me out of the blue one day that I began to figure it all out.

           “You need some ass, Sherrod,” my best friend Brandon said to me as we exited the gym building into the parking garage. “Look, I fuck with this lil’ fem dude on the eastside with a bubble booty. He ain’t cheap but he got some serious skills. That’s my go-to when I can’t find any clean and good ass when I’m horny.”

           “You pay for ass?” I asked with a smirk.

           “Nigga, at least I don’t waste my money on OnlyFans!”

“Bad Habits 6: Good Boy Gone Bad”

           Senior year at Braxton-Jacobs High was definitely a game-changing year for me. I’d gone from being somewhat of a nerd with a handful of friends to being cool with almost all of my peers. I say almost all because although I’d completely changed my image, there was one girl who still treated me like shit. Her name was Danielle Murphy and we used to be cool until seventh grade. For whatever reason, she became a major bitch to me and made it her mission to always fuck up my day. She once talked her friends into playing a prank on me where they somehow got the combination to my locker, stole my books, and tossed them in trash bins all around the school. Needless to say, I desperately wanted to get even.

           “Noah, how do you think you did on Mrs. Howell’s test?” my friend Caiden asked me as we sat in the senior lounge during our free period.

           “I know I got an A,” I answered confidently. “I mean, every question on the test came straight out of things that happened in chapters ten, eleven, and twelve from the book.”

           “Yeah, but I’m sure she put in a few trick questions.”

           “Even if she did, I know I still got an A.” The bell rang for seventh period and I asked him, “Are you staying after school today for the cyberteam meeting?”

           I rolled my eyes and said, “Of course you wouldn’t miss that. I’ll see you later, Caiden.”

           “Later, Noah.”

           We headed out of the senior lounge in separate directions. I was on my way to advanced biology in the building next door when I heard her annoying voice call out, “Girl, you gone be late if you don’t twirl and skip your fruity ass to your next class.”

“Analyzing Him”

           Before I moved to Atlanta where I currently live, I lived in Chicago with my two identical twin cousins who were my age. I’d been through so much with them going all the way back to when their mama, my paternal aunt, took me in at age sixteen when my stepdad forced my mama to throw me out for being gay. Well, he’d actually persuaded her after I told her about him giving me money in exchange for sexual favors when she kept asking me where I was getting my money from. She wanted to believe what she wanted to believe and I ended up outside on a cold winter night with my clothes scattered around the front yard. My former stepdad was the first transparent homophobe I encountered in my life.

           So, by the year 2012, I was living with my two cousins Leila and Laila in a three-bedroom house in a somewhat decent neighborhood. They worked at a processing factory and I did hair at a salon. The three of us were always extremely close, even when we were little kids. We were so close that instead of going by my actual name, Tyreese, I went by a shortened version of my middle name because it began with an L like my cousins’ names. My middle name is Levion but I told everyone to call me Levi. My cousins and I stayed out of drama and we were known for that. However, staying out of drama doesn’t necessarily mean drama won’t somehow find its way to you.

           “Hey,” I called out as I entered the kitchen side door. “I went ahead and picked up the groceries so y’all wouldn’t have to after your shifts. Wal-Mart had everything in stock tonight.”

           “Thank you so much, cuz,” Laila said while entering the kitchen. “I’ll help you carry the stuff in.”

           “Where’s Leila?” I asked while sitting down a few bags on the kitchen counter.

           “Upstairs with Shawn.”

           “Please tell me he came alone.”

           “Nope. KD’s cute ass is in the living room.”

           “Ugh, cute? Bitch where?”

           “I know he’s trash and shit, but you can’t deny that he’s fine as fuck, Levi.”

           “Fuck that lame ass nigga. For real. Come on, let’s get the groceries out of my car.” We went out to my car and grabbed the rest of the groceries and brought them inside. After putting them away, I asked Laila, “Do you think your sister is done getting her back blown out? Because I need to go upstairs and use the bathroom.”

           Laila laughed and said, “I think they’re just talking.”

           “Good because I have to take a piss and I don’t wanna hear nasty sex sounds.” I left the kitchen and braced myself for a stupid side comment from KD but he wasn’t in the living room like Laila had told me he was. Thinking he’d stepped out the front door, I headed upstairs and into the bathroom to see he was in there looking at himself in the mirror with his shirt lifted up.

“Bad Habits 5: Karmic Square”

           I admit I was lying through my teeth when I told Marcus that I had no hard feelings after he stole my girlfriend. The day I learned about him and Yvette was the worst day of my life. I loved that girl more than anything and for her to cheat on me with my coworker was beyond fucked up. Marcus wasn’t my friend and we didn’t hang out or even talk outside of work, but that didn’t lessen the hurt I was feeling. The thought of causing both of them physical harm crossed my mind but I couldn’t do some shit that would land me in prison. I threw my hands up and decided to just let karma deal with them but it seemed that karma needed my collaboration.

           It all began one day after work. Marcus’s car was in the shop so his little brother had been coming to pick him up that week and I swear that boy couldn’t stop staring at me. His name was Darrion and Marcus talked about him to everybody. He was always going on about how his little brother was smart and had gotten into like thirty colleges or some shit. So, that one day after work while Darrion was waiting for Marcus to come out of the building, I approached him and had a little talk with him. Long story short, I exchanged info with him and that began my path to revenge.

           “Y’all see this shit?” I asked my viewers on Instagram live as I showed off the room I was in. “This Airbnb spot lit as fuck, ain’t it? I got some shit comin’ up for those of you who have joined my new OnlyFans. The video will be up tomorrow, I promise. Shit is gonna be hot as fuck.            I stopped recording and laughed to myself when I got a text from Darrion asking me for the Airbnb address.            I was out for an exercise run around the neighborhood when I saw two cars parked in my new neighbor’s driveway for the first time. I’d known the house next door had been sold for a while but hadn’t seen the buyers since learning it had been sold. All my wife and I saw were movers and trucks over there for the past few weeks. Now that they’d actually moved in, I decided to wait outside for one of them to walk out and see me so I could start a conversation. When nobody walked out, I pulled out my phone and called my wife.

           “Damian, I’m busy with something at work,” she told me after answering my call. “Is something wrong?”

           “Nah, everything is cool,” I told her. “But guess what?”

           “What?”

           “I think the new neighbors have finally moved in.”

           “Really? Are they white?”

           “I don’t know. They haven’t come outside since I noticed the two cars in the driveway.”

           “I hope they’re not white.”

           “They’re probably black. White people don’t willingly move into a neighborhood that’s a majority black neighborhood unless they’re running from something, no matter how nice the neighborhood is.”

           “That’s true. Well, walk over there and introduce yourself.”

           “I thought about doing that but I don’t know. What if they’re weird? And I just got through running. I might wanna take a shower first.”

“Freak by Night 13: One Horny Night”

           When my roommate Kelly asked me if it was okay if her brother came to stay with us for a while, I was a little hesitant to say yes. I’d been best friends with Kelly for nearly seven years but I didn’t know her brother, Antonio. She kept saying he had nowhere else to go after his girlfriend put him out and she didn’t want him falling back in with a bad crowd down in Baltimore, so I caved in and said it was okay. “Hookup”

           I rarely used Grindr because it was full of fake profiles and paranoid DL men, but I was in a mood that night. I was swiping through profiles when a guy messaged me his phone number.            “Your profile said you’re on the low. How can we meet in public if you’re on the low?”

           “Ain’t nobody really in here right now. The store will be closin’ soon.”

           “Store? What store?”

           Flattered, I laughed a little and asked, “You’re at the Target in Fairmount Plaza?”

“Behind the Platform”

           I remember a time when I enjoyed doing a photoshoot with Jamal. We’d smile and have fun while the photographer snapped shots of us and the mood would be so genuine. “A Righteous Burden”

           The date July 22, 2009 is a date that I will never forget. It was a cloudy Wednesday afternoon and while I wasn’t necessarily looking forward to Pastor Ballard’s Bible study, I was excited about choir rehearsal because our choir director Mr. Hankinson had agreed to play a song that I composed myself. I’d been trying to get him to use one of my compositions since I began writing music. I wasn’t much of a gospel lyricist so Mr. Hankinson wrote words for the music, and they were amazing. I couldn’t wait to sing the song with the choir for the first time and I really couldn’t wait to sing it for the church that following Sunday. However, it wasn’t my music that made July 22, 2009 memorable. It turned out to be the day I experienced a miracle.

           “You’re not gonna change my mind,” Kareem said to me while putting on his Jordans. “I’m done with school, Ant.”

           “Why now?” I asked while looking at myself in the mirror to make sure my tie was on right. “Baby, why would you drop out of school right before our senior year?”

           “Because it’s pointless. I’m not goin’ to college or doin’ anything important so I don’t see why I should waste my time.”

           “So, being at school with me is a waste of your time?”

           “That ain’t what I meant and you know it. Anthony, I’m just done with that shit. I’m done with it. I’m a grown ass man. Fuck…I mean, forget school. I got other stuff I need to be worried about.”

           Kareem Taylor had been my boyfriend for a little over a year but we’d known each other since elementary school. He was my best friend up until sixth grade, which was when he began picking on me and hanging out with the bad boys at school. I later figured out he picked on me because he liked me and even though I liked him, too, neither of us built up the nerve to do anything about it until the end of our tenth-grade year. “Earned It”

           Asa Nichols drank from his glass of single malt Scotch while listening to a speech by his soon-to-be stepbrother, Ellis. Their parents, longtime business partners, were finally announcing their engagement to the public and Ellis was explaining to the company shareholders how the upcoming marriage would only strengthen the value of ApexCloud, the family business. It was the fifth anniversary of the death of Asa’s father, yet he was there at the Wise estate to celebrate his mother’s engagement to the man who founded ApexCloud with his late father.

           While Asa was a midlevel marketing exec for the company, Ellis was the head of public relations and the company’s spokesman. The company had been going through recent troubles and was under investigation for a number of criminal and ethics violations. With his natural ability to charm and mesmerize anyone he spoke to, Ellis easily answered questions from some shareholders and evaded questions from others. It wasn’t long before he was making his way around the room to converse with the guests and further calm any worries the shareholders may have had.

           “You are something else, man,” Asa said the moment Ellis stepped out onto the balcony.

           “You’ve been saying that about me for years,” said Ellis with a smirk. “I thought you were gonna skip this shindig tonight?”

           “And miss watching my best friend work the room like only he could? Man, whatever that shit is you use on people, they don’t teach it at Harvard.”

           “It’s all about knowing what people want to hear and phrasing it in a way that’s most palatable to them.”

           Asa leaned against the railing and stared into Ellis’ eyes before asking, “You still hate it, don’t you?”

           Ellis nodded and then asked back, “And you?”

           “You know it, man. You know it.”

           Although they were polar opposites when it came to everything from personality to sexuality, Asa and Ellis truly were best friends. Their fathers had been best friends since high school, so the two were raised together. Neither of them had siblings; therefore, their relationship resembled one of brothers at times. However, there had been an unsaid tension between them ever since the night of their senior prom. It had been nearly ten years since that night, yet the tension was there whenever they were around one another. The only thing that kept them from addressing the tension was the ambiguity of its source.

           “We can wait it out in here until everyone is gone,” Ellis said while leading Asa into his father’s entertainment suite.

“A Righteous Burden”

           The date July 22, 2009 is a date that I will never forget. It was a cloudy Wednesday afternoon and while I wasn’t necessarily looking forward to Pastor Ballard’s Bible study, I was excited about choir rehearsal because our choir director Mr. Hankinson had agreed to play a song that I composed myself. I’d been trying to get him to use one of my compositions since I began writing music. I wasn’t much of a gospel lyricist so Mr. Hankinson wrote words for the music, and they were amazing. I couldn’t wait to sing the song with the choir for the first time and I really couldn’t wait to sing it for the church that following Sunday. However, it wasn’t my music that made July 22, 2009 memorable. It turned out to be the day I experienced a miracle.

           “You’re not gonna change my mind,” Kareem said to me while putting on his Jordans. “I’m done with school, Ant.”

           “Why now?” I asked while looking at myself in the mirror to make sure my tie was on right. “Baby, why would you drop out of school right before our senior year?”

           “Because it’s pointless. I’m not goin’ to college or doin’ anything important so I don’t see why I should waste my time.”

           “So, being at school with me is a waste of your time?”

           “That ain’t what I meant and you know it. Anthony, I’m just done with that shit. I’m done with it. I’m a grown ass man. Fuck…I mean, forget school. I got other stuff I need to be worried about.”

           Kareem Taylor had been my boyfriend for a little over a year but we’d known each other since elementary school. He was my best friend up until sixth grade, which was when he began picking on me and hanging out with the bad boys at school. I later figured out he picked on me because he liked me and even though I liked him, too, neither of us built up the nerve to do anything about it until the end of our tenth-grade year. I wrote him a letter basically telling him that I wanted us to be boyfriends. He came to my house after school that day and gave me my first kiss. And just like that, we were together.
