General Cleaning, Construction, and Depression

I am not an OC person but I personally like cleaning and organizing. Our family has a tradition of doing general cleaning every end of the year. And when I say general cleaning, I mean moving furniture around, dusting all corners of the house, purposefully looking for things that we don’t need anymore to throw them out, and returning things where they were supposed to be. 

The thing about general cleaning is that you will never achieve excellent cleanliness without turning things over. A huge mess will be made, dust and dirt will scatter everywhere, but you know that it’s all part of the whole process of cleaning. 

The same thing happens when you are doing constructions/reconstructions in the house. It’s impossible to do it without dirt, dust, and probably chaotic noises that are excruciatingly annoying. It’s all part of the process of construction and reconstruction.

In the same way, when our life gets too messy and toxic or whenever we get broken, God does general cleaning and reconstruction. He might need to move around some things, purposefully take out junk that you don’t need or is not helpful anymore, or return things to where they need to be. Of course it will be messy at first. It might even hurt, but it will all pass. The dust will settle, the pain will subside, things will definitely get better.

But yeah, I do know that going through times like that is not as easy as cleaning the house. It may cause you to breakdown or experience depression. I’ve been there. I know what it’s like to have a hard time pulling yourself together especially when things are falling apart. I know how extremely hard it is to watch the things you value be taken away from you one by one.

But it will pass. Believe me, it will pass.

It may hurt right now, it may be messy right now, but all of that will subside. Set your eyes on the goal. You don’t do cleaning and renovation to make your house worse than it was but rather, to improve it. In the same way, God’s purpose was not to hurt you, but to make things better for you. It’s all for the best. Who knows, the things you’ve been considering valuable then probably isn’t as valuable as you think they are. Perhaps instead of helping you, they are already destroying you without you knowing it.

If right now, God is still at work in cleaning you up, please, please, persevere! Things will get better! It did for me and I’m sure that it will for you too. When all this is over, you’ll thank God for not giving up on you and you’ll thank yourself for holding on. After all, God only wants the best for His children. :)

Put God’s Lifeline into your deadline

You ever wish you could have a quick meeting with God just so you could compare notes, go over the blueprints of your life and synchronize your watches? So often we find that our timing is not God’s timing. We’re either taking too long to do what we have to do, or we’re trying to rush it, stepping out before we’re ready.

Proverbs 3:5 says, Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your paths.

The story of Lazarus is such an amazing example of just that. Jesus knew Lazarus was ill and he knew that he was the only one who could save him, yet he stayed where he was for two more days. It wasn’t until Lazarus had actually been dead for four days that Jesus showed up to see about the situation. But when he did, there was a miracle. Lazarus rose from the dead.

There have been many times in my life when I was behind the eight ball with a deadline and I needed God to move instantly. But he didn’t. At least not the way I wanted him to. Oftentimes God will allow us to go through challenging situations not only so we can develop character, but also so that we can come to trust him, really trust him.

I heard a story recently of a young lady who felt she heard from God that she was going to go to Cambridge to study. She told all her friends and waited with great expectation to get her acceptance letter. Only the letter didn’t come. She was denied. That year she watched all her friends leave for University while she stayed home and worked.

Every year for the next four years she applied to Cambridge and each year she failed to get in. And when her friends came home to visit she would always say, “God told me I’m going to Cambridge and I just know I’m going.”

Finally as all her classmates from secondary school were beginning to graduate and move back home, she had some news. She had gotten into Cambridge. In her fourth year of applying, the University told her to take a few courses and if she did well in them she would be accepted. And so she did. Off to Cambridge she went.

Wow, what outrageous faith. Honestly, if that were me, like most, I would have thought I heard wrong. I would have given up and attended another University-time is of the essence. How many of us know God enough to stand on his promises no matter how long they take? Even Mary and Martha were a bit miffed about Jesus’ timing. “Lord, had you been here, my brother would not have died,” Martha said.

More often than not, having faith is about trusting God for his timing and resting in the fact that God knows every detail of the situation and is in control.

Sure, I’ve missed many a deadline and even paid consequences, but those were always little picture situations. God is not intimidated by man’s time limits. When I look at the big picture from God’s perspective, I realize God is very detailed in his plans for our lives and he isn’t willing to sacrifice development for time. Waiting on God is a good thing. And as I’ve heard it said before, “It’s even better if you can wait [patiently] while you wait.”

Dear God, help us to get our timing right with yours. And when we see that things aren’t working as quickly as we would like, please help us to relax and simply trust that you know the times and seasons of our lives.
