The swirling vortex of sound starts early: long before 7 on a summer morning one can hear touts call out to locals on market streets, the clatter and bang of trucks being unloaded, their rumbles pierced by the bleat of e-bike horns. An old woman claps her qi to life as someone pulls a cart down the road. Spotted doves, tits, bulbuls, magpies and more all make themselves known and the cicadas intermittently sound as the morning heats up.
Much more reaches the ear, and much doesn’t. The electric hum carried along the wires starts to get into the listener. It is juice for those who are primed. The sounds on this release are all somehow informed by the din, honed and shaped in anonymous office buildings, ceiling-to-wall stuffed bookshops, highrise apartments and tiny flats along centuries-old lanes.
These longtime scene stalwarts, up-and-comers, locals and expats from 3.5 corners of the globe are just a small sample of what can be found here. This is Campaign 1.
