Here’s why I don’t think the “discourse” surrounding Mary is misogynistic: the criticism is of her behavior, specifically toward Freddie’s Garden Lodge family in the wake of his death, and of the homophobic things she’s said in the press. That’s it. I’ve been following this fandom for almost three years, however marginally, so I doubt what I say carried any weight here, but I’m familiar with what goes on here. It’s pretty civil. I don’t know what goes on in other Queen fandoms on other platforms because I’m not there. But I have been on fan forums for other bands, the old-school kind that are almost entirely made up of middle-aged white men, and if you want to see misogyny, it’s blatant. And of course I’m not saying that women are immune to misogyny, but I also don’t like putting the onus on women with a patronizing “we should know better.”

Criticism of a woman is misogynistic when it uses misogynistic slurs or stems from sexist ideals and stereotypes about women. For example, if someone said, “Mary is an ugly cunt and Freddie strayed away from her because she wasn’t good enough for him”, that’s using a slur and misogynistic victim-blaming that says it’s a woman’s fault for her partner cheating on her and leaving her, because she wasn’t the perfect, ideal girlfriend (there’d be dumb homophobia in that statement too, but I digress). I’ve never seen anyone say anything like this, though. I mentioned this before, but it would also be sexist for people to hate Mary if we knew nothing about her—in the way people may hate Veronica or Chrissy—because she got to be with Freddie. But we know a lot about Mary. We have a lot of firsthand and secondhand accounts.

There is no patriarchal or misogynistic foundation for criticizing a woman’s homophobia, serophobia, and decision to immediately kick people out of their home after a tragic death and deny them ownership of their pets. This behavior would be as worthy of judgment if it were done by a man. Like you said, there’s a lot of blatant misogyny in classic rock. If people actually care about women, they could go look at that instead.

in response to the previous anon asking about the tennis photo, i'm not 100% sure that is jim. it's also possible that it is is tony pike. it's really hard to tell bcuz tony pike had dark hair and a moustache and the photo quality isn't great. not trying to rain on anyone's parade, just saying.

This was Tony Pike that day. So unless he took off the chain he’s wearing, I think the person in the photo below was Jim. The chest hair are also kinda indicative.
