what a pro-shipper actually is (from a redditor)
It’s important to note that not all pro-shippers like the same problematic ships. Some hate incest, some hate teacher-student pairings, some hate age-gaps, etc. They just support people being able to ship whatever they want without fear of harassment, doxxing, etc. DO NOT ASK AN ANTI WHAT A PROSHIPPER IS. It’s likely that they’ll give you a biased answer that paints pro-shippers as pedophiles, and they aren’t.

me: yeah I used to identify as a pro shipper but I don’t anymore because im not seventeen anymore and realised fiction and reality is a complex issue that cannot be summed up in one or two buzzwords. both sides have really good and really bad people and points, which people on the other don’t realise because it’s weirdly encouraged to send harassment to people and that keeps an endless war going on.
yes, fiction can spread negative ideas and bad messaging, but most of the time it’s genuinely people who don’t know any better and they need education and not shaming. not every depiction is intended to be an endorsement, and there’s a massive disconnect between people who define shipping as simply neutrally finding a dynamic interesting and thinking it’s somewhat positive at least that leads to mass miscommunication. thinking critically about your interests is important and fun but it’s okay to like things in a mindless way. literally like 90% of this whole discourse could be solved if antis and pro shippers literally just talked to each other because this whole thing is primarily severe miscommunication between people saying “dark fic is fine and cool” and “you can spread harmful messaging through fiction and you probably shouldn’t” which are not mutually exclusive and shouldn’t be.
99% of people on both side are lovely people who are biased through having a bad experience with the other side because the discourse breeds extreme toxicity and the 1% of people who are dickheads take advantage of that and turn decent people into harassers and influence them to have bad takes. i’ve probably had shitty takes in the past when i was seventeen and i appreciate being told that but also people change.
this whole thing is pointless bullshit between two points that both vary from very based to fucking awful depending on the person arguing for them and it’s fucking stupid to get involved which is why i’ve stopped doing it because it’s literally the dumbest thing and i do not give a fuck. people need to realise this is a complex issue and it cannot be boiled down to approaches that don’t work when followed to absolutes.
also, writing rpf of minors that is sexual literally makes me sick and is genuinely an incredibly fucked up morally bad thing but the worst part of the communities that do it is the fact they’re literally full of grooming and very literal cp not like written stuff as in actual real pictures of real children and i don’t think that should be ignored and kids that escape from that deserve support and sympathy because they were probably groomed.

all the signs are there.
if you have no other record of any fics you have there… you might wanna… like… do something about that.
Whoops. I did not intend for this post to blow up in the way it did. I’m not saying this is gonna happen tomorrow or even this year. I don’t have any inside information, and I’m purely basing it off of past experience. They could surprise us. Who knows?
The signs I’m seeing are based off of watching other fandom-driven websites in their end days.
The biggest glaring red flag: they no longer have any visible active moderation team or admins that are working on Fanfiction.net specifically. Reports are going unanswered on everything from plagiarism to abuse to page-breaking ads. Emails are not returned. Twitter mentions are never addressed.
Based off of their limited Twitter activity, all of their resources appear to have been funneled to FictionPress, leaving Fanfiction.net to flounder. If a website does not have anyone actively attending to it, it will eventually die.
The abuse alone could drive users from the website. When users are receiving repeated death threats and they have no way of curtailing the abuse or banning abusive users from messaging them, users will eventually just leave. Admins would have the capability of blocking the IP addresses of people sending abusive reviews and messages, but… what admins?
The code update that went through a few years ago that broke many old fics was never fixed. Many users are reporting major issues in uploading fics. The more they leave the site unattended, the more things will break.
The domain is registered through 2028, but if they keep going in the way that they are sooner or later it’s just going to wind up as a barely-functioning corpse of a website.
I am convinced that the only reason they leave it up is to collect ad revenue. If users continue to leave due to abuse and unreliable service, that ad revenue is going to tank.
I’ve seen this happen to so many websites over the years, and they rarely - if ever - get a revival.
But again - they could surprise us. I’m not counting on it, though. Nobody’s home anymore.
I would like to introduce people to FanfictionDownloader .
It is a little program that does just what it says. You install it, open it, enter the FF.net URL, and it will generate a file in your preferred e-reader format.
Whether the OP is right or not that FFN’s doom is nigh… I think it’s a good idea to back up one’s work regularly anyway, yes?

FFN’s activity has been slowing since around 2013. Until recently, I was still seeing a lot of “Ugh, FFN is way better than AO3″ talk on reddit (a less AO3-y space than tumblr). However, as of the last month or two, I see a lot of complaining about the ads and brokenness. My impression is that this is a big and sudden change. There is nervousness about the site’s future in a way there wasn’t even a few months ago. The admins have been useless for a long time, but it seems like something has changed.
Again, we’re not saying this is immediate, but the signs are suspicious, and backing things up can take a while.

I've been doing this since I was a kid, aging up the girl Pokemon protagonists and seeing just how many ships I could get attached to, but in the past few years or so, there's been a lot of hate around it.
