I’m sort of on the run so if I can’t reach you then I’m probably lying low, just for a little bit longer. I’ve got Hydra and the Government on my ass for something I didn’t even do but it’s not like they’d listen to me. I’m trying my hardest to make a new life, something different from what Hydra gave me. It’s a little hard when I barely remember my name, or how the economy works, or how to get a job. I can’t even put my real birthday on anything. (Trying to explain that I’m well over 90 is too much work.).

A book was open in Bucky’s lap, a page open however he didn’t care much about what was happening in it. He was mainly just reading it to pass the time, he was bored, perhaps it was because he had nothing to do or because life was too still at the moment. He didn’t mind either option just needed something to fill the space.

“Well…” He looks down at himself, giggling softly. “I was going through some things, you know?” he says, sitting on a chair close to the other man. “Sooo... How are you feeling?”

James wasn’t very conspicuous, perhaps he didn’t know how or he’d grown to a point where he didn’t care about embarrassment, so his eyes raking down Rowan’s body wasn’t something he was trying to hide. His book had now been pushed off to the side, showing that he was actively participating in the conversation. He’d mentally saved the page, just to ensure that he didn’t lose it.

“ Hungry. What about you? In the mood for food? I’m not going to keel over or anything so it can wait. ”

He looks around for a moment and then back at James.

Rowan bites his lower lip — something he does when he’s nervous, anxious, or just deep in thought.

“Oh, seeing you in line at McDonald’s would be a sign of the apocalypse. You look more like the chicken-salad-and-gym type of guy.” He smirks, a playful look on his face.

James could relate to the “wrong body” feeling, though not because of gender but because of a sense of belonging. He never truly felt like this body belonged to him, sometimes he felt as if he just inhabited the body and the Winter Soldier was lurking just waiting for a time to strike. Even though Wakanda had made sure that it was complete eradicated from his mind, sometimes he still worried. “ Genderfluid? ”

He didn’t want to seem disrespectful, he just also didn’t know what was happening. His eyebrow raised before letting it drop and focusing back on food. However Rowan was more worried about James knowing it was him, why wouldn’t he? “ Just because your appearance changed doesn’t mean you’re different habit wise. You still bite your lip whenever you’re nervous doll, and you’re the only one whose face still heats up whenever I call you that. ”

He shook his head for a moment, not demeaning but jokingly, as if he was still poking fun at the action. “ I may be old but I’m not blind. ” Rowan had a point Barnes was not a big Mc.Donalds fan, it was more of a last minute thing if he ever got it and even then he’d just hover around the fries for twenty minutes rather than actually getting real foods.

“Yeah, genderfluid people are those who don’t fit into just one gender and kind of flow between them. Sometimes I feel more like a woman, sometimes like a boy, sometimes both, or even neither…” Rowan smiles softly while explaining, not feeling the slightest bit offended by James’s question. He knows all too well how it feels when people are judging him, and he doesn’t sense any of that here — only genuine curiosity.

“So, what do you wanna eat? We can always cook something at home. I love cooking, so… it’s up to you. And hey, you don’t look that old. Just like a good man. Sometimes I even forget you’re this superhero guy. I just see you as my friend.” Rowan smirks, teasing him about his age.

It didn’t take long before their neck started to heat up and their ears were a different shade of pink. He nodded as Rowan continued to talk, actually paying attention to what was being said despite only poking fun at their short temper.

“ Sometimes both, sometimes neither… I can see how that makes some sense. It’s like a feeling thing, like what makes you feel like you, right? ”

Barnes didn’t really have much of a response after that, taking to his feet with a small stretch before heading towards the kitchen. Since takeout didn’t seem like an option with Rowan purposefully shooting down every option except cooking, it looked like he was just going to have to cook. Not that he minded, the activity was actually quite relaxing, stressful whenever it came to dishes but besides that it was nice. “ I wouldn’t say superhero, but whatever adjective comes to mind, doll. He turned back to face Rowan, pulling away from the cabinets and pantry. Arms being used as a crutch against the ledge so that he could push himself forward. “ Pasta? Salad? Maybe a meat? Chicken? Steak? ”
