“What on bloody earth is a tree lighting ceremony?”
Killian glances at the poster, a brightly decorated Christmas tree in the centre. “You know the Christmas tree in the centre of town?” Killian nodded. “It’s to celebrate the lights being turned on. There’s food, music, and the shops in town have brightly lit displays.”
“All to celebrate a tree being lit? What is the blood point in that?” You laughed, shaking your head.
“It’s about getting together, giving businesses a chance to promote their Christmas wares. Why don’t we go?”
“To see a tree being lit.” You crossed the room to gather your coat, and you moved your head out of your jacket as you glanced back at him.
“To have the experience. Come on, I promise you’ll have fun.”
“I doubt that,” Killian mumbled
Bright lights, people chatted animatedly, and Christmas music echoed all around. Main Street was crowded. Killian held onto your hand tightly as you navigated the busy crowd until you found Granny’s mulled wine stand.
“I haven’t seen you here before, Killian.”
“I’ve been coerced. What’s this anyway?” Killian smelled the cup suspiciously.
“Mulled wine.” Killian’s eyebrow quirked as he took a mouthful, with a satisfied hum. Killian finished the rest of the cup.
“I’ll take another.” Granny poured him another cup. With another cup in hand, Killian followed you through the streets. Soon, Killian’s arm hooked over your shoulders, hook resting gently against your chest.
“Alright, we’ve got wine. What about food?”
“Come on,” You made the next stop, Killian bit down into the mince pie, his mouth filled with a spiced sweet.
“Not bad. I’ve had worse.”
You and Killian wandered around Main Street. Killian pulled you close as the afternoon turned into the evening. The cold nipped at your faces as you anticipated the main event.
Killian didn’t understand why people gathered around to celebrate the lighting of a Christmas tree. The whole thing still remained to be utterly pointless, yet there was something Killian had enjoyed. The ablity to wander around town observing you glow under the lights, your eagerness to show him a good time.
Maybe’s it wasn’t about lighting the tree. Perhaps it was an excuse to spend time with loved ones.
“You okay?” Killian glanced towards you, a smile on his face. Killian lenas in, pressing an unusually soft kiss onto your lips. You react immediately, leaning into him, hand resting on his chest. Killian pulled away, a hair’s width away from you, breath mingling together.
“Is a man not allowed to kiss his beloved?” Killian kissed you once more, harder determined to prove a point. He didn’t care for onloookers. However, soon he felt people too close to him. Reluctantly he glanced up to determine the sudden closeness.
“Look they’re about the light the tree.” Snow came out of no-where, pointing enthusiastically. Killian would have much preferred to continue kissing you, but with your attention moved, he joined you.
As the tree was lit a sudden round of applause echoed through the street. Killian glanced around to confirm everyone was clapping at the tree. Had they all gone mad?
Killian decided from that day forward, he would gladly attend a Christmas tree lightening again. However, he didn’t care if the lights ever turned on. As he had you, a mince pie and mulled wine, it was an adventure well attended.
