Page of a letter from Leopold and Wolfgang Mozart to the rest of the family back home in Salzburg, late 1772. This was during the time at which the premiere of Mitridate, re di Ponto was being prepared in Milan. Here Leopold describes to his wife the tense situation surrounding the final rehearsals and his desire that his son should hurry up and finish two arias not yet completed on the evening before they are to be rehearsed.

On the following page, 12 year-old Wolfgang jots a brief note to his sister in which every other line is upside down. “Farewell, my little lung,” he closes. “I kiss you, my liver, and remain as always my stomach, your worthless brother Wolfgang frater. I have been bitten, sister. Please scratch me.”
