All About Virgo: The Virgin
The archetype of Virgo is organized, quiet, modest; all traits of the zodiac’s perfectionist. The Virgin, as Virgo is often referred to, does well in symbolizing their modesty, mindfulness and humble attitude, yet there is much more to Virgos than just this.
Virgo is the sixth astrological sign, and the sun transits through this sign from 22nd August to 22nd September. All born on or between these two dates are able to refer to themselves as Virgos. A mutable sign, Virgo is not the most stubborn and can be easily influenced by both external and internal forces. Additionally, Virgo is an earth sign, alongside venusian Taurus and saturnian Capricorn.
The ruling planet of the Virgin is mercury, much like fellow mutable sign Gemini. In Roman mythology, Mercury was the messenger of the Gods. The planet of Mercury represents traits often associated with the mind, such as intellect, thought, communication, and practicality. Virgo certainly embodies many of these Mercurian traits, especially when it comes to logic, which in Virgo’s case can sometimes be excessive. The manner in which these qualities are seen in oneself depends on where Virgo’s energy can be found in the natal chart.
I will describe in more detail the effects of having Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Mercury, Venus, and Mars in Virgo.
One’s Sun sign can say a lot about the surface; the exterior personality. It can illustrate the core personality traits of someone- essentially the foundations of their character. Virgo suns are generally associated with introversion, considering their anxiety and critical eye for others (especially prospective friends and relationships).
Those with Virgo as their Sun sign can feel an underlying motivation to make things and even the people in their life “just right.” However, contrary to the common belief that this is done out of selfishness, it is most often done for betterment in both parties. Perhaps a more negative manifestation of this would be a strong urge to “fix” things that cannot be fixed, which can leave a Virgo frustrated and even confused.
Virgos are extremely generous, and believe that if nobody else will do it, they will. They do many things for the people around them, such as lend money to pay for something, give an unexpected gift, etc., it is their biggest concern that they take care of those they are attached to. Much like Cancer, Virgo is a rather motherly sign in both good and bad ways. Solar Virgos are also massive worrywarts, and spend much of their time picking apart things that could, or did, go awry.
A person’s Moon sign can say many things about their internal selves, a part of themselves that others don’t usually get to see. The Moon sign tells someone’s emotional procedures, how they feel, and what they require to be fulfilled in their relationships.
A rather difficult placement to cope with, those with a Virgo Moon are very prone to tearing themselves apart. Unlike a Virgo Sun who may be more prone to judging others (the Sun is external), a Lunar Virgo diligently picks at their own self-esteem (the Moon is internal). Many Virgo placements contradict one another in similar ways, considering that Virgo is both mutable yet still clings to a routine. These people can find nearly any flaw that they possess, and are capable of finding imperfections that may not even exist in another’s eyes.
Easily stressed, Virgo Moons function best without pressure being applied to a situation. They are very analytical when it comes to emotions, and feel a need to identify what they are feeling, when they are feeling it, and why. In this way, they are rather in-touch with their emotions. Because Virgo as an archetype gives more than takes, Virgo Moons can struggle with feeling underappreciated after they go above-and-beyond what is usual or even necessary and get only a meager thanks in return.
The Ascendant, also referred to as the Rising sign, dictates one’s appearance, first impressions, and surface relationships such as acquaintances and business partners. If someone had to guess your sign at a glance, they would most likely mistake your Rising sign for your Sun sign.
Those with a Virgo Ascendant generally come across as very neat. They may dress professionally, or merely stick to simple colour schemes such as monochrome. Virgo Risings don’t feel any real need to stick out with their fashion, and usually prefer to keep it minimalistic. They can give the impression of being busy or preoccupied, and might find themselves fidgeting in different ways, ex. pacing, checking their phone, tapping, biting nails, etc.
Virgo Risings can also appear judgmental, as some of them can be, which can make others more reluctant to approach them. To strangers or people who are unfamiliar with them, a Virgo Ascendant can seem authoritative or dominant in nature because of the way they carry themselves (professionally, with a meticulous attention to detail).
Mercury is representative of the mind and intellect, and dictates one’s thought process, speech, and intellectual strengths. Virgo’s ruling planet happens to be Mercury, and many Mercurian traits are prominent in those with this placement. Virgo Mercury could be described as a skeptic, because those with this placement win first place for overthinking. They derive enjoyment from analyzing the logic behind just about anything. People with their Mercury in Virgo are generally quite calm, and are fairly good about thinking before they speak (at least more so than others). These individuals are quite smart, and will always push for more even if there is nothing left. They often know precisely what to say, and are deliberate and to-the-point in how they articulate themselves.
Venus symbolizes passion, how one behaves in love, sensuality, and how someone defines their idea of a good time. In terms of romantic partners, Virgo Venuses are infamous for their urge to find the “perfect partner.” Since perfection doesn’t exist, and every person has their flaws, people with this placement can feel let down for not having their soaring expectations met. They often create an image of their ideal mate, and after spending too much time in their head with this unattainable ideal they can easily feel unsatisfied. Individuals with a Virgo Venus enjoy being surprised with something that ideally aligns with what they deem to be routine, but is just enough to refresh their senses.
Mars is the planet of aggression, sexuality, and power. Those with their Mars in Virgo are more than proficient when it comes to arguments, which is due to their attention to detail. Whether you know it or not, a Virgo Mars is almost guaranteed to pick up on your insecurities and shortcomings very quickly. This means that they have a nearly unending stream of ammo, and in some cases they know precisely what someone’s Achilles’ heel is. They tend to be irritated when something doesn’t go their way, someone fails to meet their needs, or they simply aren’t being fulfilled.
