hi pam! How are you? š
I think you spoke about learning Korean some time ago (a long time ago, I guess actually haha). Do you still learn it? How is your progress and what did you find are the āessentialsā when learning it, like where did you start, what do you think one needs to understand etc.? I started learning it two days ago - so far I can read Hangul, in a reaaaally slow pace but still haha. I still donāt understand anything but at least I can make sounds (and therefore some sense) to the symbols I see ššš Iām amazed at how things I couldnāt fantasize making sense of, I now can āreadā. šš I love learning languages, I learned English, French and Russian in school. I also had to learn Latin @uni. Recently I also started practicing Russian again with duolingo (which is a horrible app IMO š
š
no grammar rules explained whatsoever, that irks me so much - guess my mercury placement haha). Do you have any language learning Tipps? Like apps?
And a more Astro related question: do you think there are placements in our chart which indicate our language learning style? I donāt mean an interest or a talent for learning languages, more so where to look at to know how you can best pursue learning them? Thank you so much, I love reading your answers!! š„°š
yes iām still learning. i would say my progress has been good and iām the go-to translator for some of my mutuals now lol. i think you started off right by learning hangul straight away so you donāt have to use romanisation and from there i would recommend ttmik and how to study korean and go through their lessons one by one bc so many people swear by them. to confess, i actually donāt know how to study well. i never took notes or properly practiced. well on my phone i kinda did but i didnāt sit down at a desk or anything and do lessons lmao so please keep that in mind.
anyway moving on, one thing to note is that from what iāve learnt, not all languages are equal. you said you learnt english in school so i donāt know what your native language is, but say you were a a native english speaker, learning french, spanish, german or swedish for example are considered the āeasyā languages to learn. learning a language of course isnāt easy but in terms of ranking they overall rank easier. korean is one of the hardest. but then it goes both way ofc, so for ex. korean is considered one of the easier languages for native japanese speakers to learn while french is considered one of the harder ones. the reason i bring this up, is bc from the stories iāve heard too, this means studying a language can be different depending on how distant the language is from the one/s you already know (iām saying this due to your astro question as well)
i think the overall advice for korean would be to start off with verb endings and grammar patterns so you can recognise them in a sentence (this is basically what ttmik does btw). this might make more sense even once you know a little bit more but it can help immensely bc then you can google it bc korean sentences arenāt spaced the same way and grammar will usually be attached to the word and makes it hard to look up new vocab if you donāt recognise it.
for example: ģ¬ėģ ė§ģ¹ ė¶ģ„ė ź°ģģ ė¤ģ¹ėź¹ (blackpink lyric lol)
in bold is grammar and not part of the actual word, even recognising this is helpful early on bc even if you need a refresher on a grammar particle you can google it (using ģ¬ėģ from the example above) by simply typing in āģ grammarā you will find several free websites and probably even videos that will explain it for you. and since you know ģ is the grammar particle and ģ¬ė is the word, if you didnāt know what ģ¬ė meant, you could just look it up.
and this is basically how both a friend and i learnt. we just read things, googled, and repeated. i donāt know if that works for everyone, but i think itās effective.
so back to your astro question. i donāt know, sorry. since learning languages can be different depending on the languages you already know and since learning a new language means you have to go in kind of ignorant and learn things the hard way (thatās why thereās so many āthings i wish i knew before i started studying koreanā videos and blog posts) i donāt think itās easy to associate a language learning style to certain astro placements.
oh btw with duolingo, i never used it but i heard that while the app is a little bad, the actual website is great bc thatās where all the explanations actually are and apparently the app and website are meant to be used in conjunction with each other
