My contribution to the eridian welcoming committee adorable chaos is that at some point Grace receives a letter that actually makes sense in English. Like it's polite, well-written and would make sense as a welcoming card. And he's so confused. What happened to the cards accidentally suggesting they wanted him to go to hell or something? What if they're actually trying to be mean this time and it came out nicely? He gets Rocky over who tells him they worked very hard to get this one right and does he like it and poor grace is like no?? "Grace want to be told to go to hell again then question?" YES!!!

Imo it's even funnier if you hc that the Eridian Welcoming Committee don't even know how to read and write English. They're plugging their messages to Saviour Grace into the jankiest first edition version of Edridian Google translate and copy pasting the first thing that it spits out.

Rocky, who is one of Erid's foremost Thinking Machine Experts, has offered numerous times to fix the translation program for them. Rocky has offered numerous times to go over their translations in person since, y'know, he's also Erid's second most fluent reader and writer of English.

The EWC think Saviour Rocky is very kind, but probably overreacting. After all, if their mistranslations and general cultural misunderstandings were as bad as everybody claims, then surely Saviour Grace would have complained by now.

Rocky would really like Grace to complain. Rocky has begged Grace to complain. During a particularly tense discussion on the subject, Rocky went so far as to threaten to change the biodome's wifi password. (Taken back immediately when Grace pointed out that this would mean no more movie nights for the foreseeable future.)

Grace considers the team's efforts to be a key part of his enrichment. The team are just thrilled to be making him feel more at home on Erid, since he's going to be living here for the rest of his tragically short human lifespan (as clarified in their latest message: “YOU WILL DIE HERE. SOON. 😊”).

Rocky is in hell statement. Maybe it's not too late to go back into space again.

As I am "severely the target audience for project hail mary" I have to point out. The thing about Grace's theories the scientific community hated so so so much re: life not necessarily having to be water/carbon based............ In Real Life Astrobiology this has already been pretty extensively discussed and largely discounted. So. Watching the scene where he's talking about like "the only original idea I ever had" I was kinda chewing on my lips like oooooh it's worse actually LMAO

Like. I need you all to understand. He's not getting laughed out of the room because it's this outlandish new idea, it's that in the theoretical biochemistry world this is *already outdated* and he's just like "NO LISTEN IT COULD STILL HAPPEN" & the scientific community is like can you shut the fuck up

To be fair I would like to stress that it's *largely* discounted not Entirely 100% ruled out. There are some ongoing arguments about this afaik. But it really adds something to my enjoyment of this movie like oh buddy. It's so much worse than it sounds. Fully not a new idea he's pulling kind of a "here's how bernie can still win"

I love this because it adds to his character.

It's Weir going "what's something embarassing he could be obsessed by" and also he spends the rest of the book introducing Grace to aliens who don't SEEM to have water but turns out they do. Just straight up torturing his creations lol.

Did you know that due to an accidental introduction of rats, the Lord Howe Island stick insect population was brought down to 24 individuals and now there are tens of thousands of them?

This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.

honestly i can imagine Grace getting so used to decoding EWC's letters (to some degree) that if they somehow sent something that both Makes Sense and isnt an innuendo,

he'd actually be more confused than he is by the nonsensical or borderline sexual letters bc he'd be looking for hidden meanings that it, for once, does not have lmao

suggestion: EWC tries to get Grace a pet for cuddles/companionship & it's basically a boa constrictor

"A hugging snake would be perfect for our touch-starved friend!" and them not realizing that while it is a good pet for a carapace-having eridian, it is less good for a squishy human
