I think Touya Todoroki is basically representing a phoenix. Going with the theory that Dabi is a Todoroki, and that it is shown that Dabi cannot control his quirk and it might’ve caused him burns, it is a possibility that in Touya/Dabi’s younger age fight or flight response was to erupt in flames. Endeavor, being the piece of shit, probably didn’t care and thought Touya was dead, throwing him out the back somewhere, not checking for a single sign of life. He possibly did this out of anger of Endeavor hurting his mom and his youngest brother and them going to their respective hospitals.
Natsuo, of course, saw and heard the whole thing, being absolutely traumatized by the whole event. Of course, Shoto wouldn’t know this happened. He was in the hospital. Shoto more than likely didn’t even get to see his siblings. Natsuo didn’t even know Shoto’s favorite food until Shoto was 16.
Now, after Endeavor through Touya out on the streets, he awoke with major burns. His arms, chest, legs, and face bleeding, not knowing what to do and just attempting to help himself. Finding metal, mending it and trying to keep his face together. With this, his muscle movements were greatly limited, he lost multiple muscles in his face and thus limited his facial movements. Touya was already weak
to begin with, having the body of an ice user, yet having a overpowering fire quirk that could destroy his body from the inside out. Touya being Dabi is likely, due to Dabi never trying or being able to fight any heroes, or U.A. students, while they are at their full capacity. Even possibly being shown he has an intense sympathy for weaker students.
I don’t have an idea why Dabi would choose that name to rename himself as, being a phoenix rising from the ashes, but another user pointed out that “Dabi” in Hebrew means “dearly loved”. It is a very sad possibility that Rei called Dabi this as a cute nickname. Now this could be a huge possibility, as Rei would never know that her son, Touya Todoroki, labeled himself a nickname she gave him, because she has no access to the outside world. She doesn’t have access to a phone, a T.V., probably not even a newspaper. She would be the only one to truly recognize her son. Shoto wouldn’t, he never knew him, Natsuo thinks he’s dead, Fuyumi possibly barley remembers him, and Endeavor would deny.
The whole Todoroki family is sad, and adding Dabi to the mix might make it even sadder, even though it is basically canon at this point.
