God help the Outcasts Children of God.
Well sitting in school for seven hours was terrible.Â
I’m never doing that again.
Oh? And what do you plan on doing instead?
Really?! Oh, that would be great! Wow.Â
I would really have to pay you, though. I’d feel so bad! Unless we were good friends or something.
We’ll just have to become good friends, then, because I won’t let you pay.
Can’t blame a man for trying, can you? Â
But really. Â Your show was splendid tonight. Â Where can I leave a tip?
I suppose not...
You can leave it in the hat over there. Thank you very much- that's very kind of you.Â
It’s no problem, Love.Â
And I suppose we’ll see who pays for what when we get down there. It just depends.Â
You’re far too kind, really.
I don’t think we’ve ever formally met, by the way- I’m Esmeralda.
More graceful than me, I can assure you!
Hey, maybe I just need lessons.
Don't be too sure- sometimes we can surprise ourselves.
If you're actually considering lessons, I would be happy to teach you, no payment needed. Just keep that in the back of your head.
Religion Headcanons
Esmeralda grew up as a Roma, and followed many aspects of the Catholic faith. However, there are aspects of both Romani culture, as well as Catholicism, which she does not follow strictly.Â
Romani beliefs that she adheres to:
The belief in Devel/Del (God) and Beng (satan)
The belief that bibaxt, or good luck, and mulo (supernatural spirits) exist
Use of amulets and various charms to bring luck or good fortune
Shaktism, or the necessity of a female consort to be present in order to worship a God
Possessing multiple names is a tool used to confuse and ward off evil spirits. Esmeralda is her second name, and the first was only ever known by her parents, before they died. She still knows the name, but that is a secret she will take to her grave
Asking forgiveness for a person's grievances once they are deceased, for fear of them returning to the world as an evil spirit
The burial of possessions, clothing, money, etc. with the deceased in order to help them along to the next world
Karma, or the concept that the sum of a person's actions can equate to their future
Romani beliefs that she does not adhere to:
A girl is to married at a young age, and must retain her virginity until that time
Marriage is a higher priority than Education
Marhime, or the belief that a person is unclean from the waist down. Even so, Esmeralda often washes her tops and bottoms seperately out of either habit, or respect for other Roma around her
Catholic beliefs that she does not adhere to:
The bible is the exact word of God, and should be followed word for word. Instead, she believes that it is more the spirit of the religion that should be followed, as opposed to the direct message
*OOC disclaimer: in no way do I claim to be any sort of expert on Romani culture, and I apologize if I convey any incorrect information through these headcanons. If you see something that you know needs to be fixed, please don't hesitate to let me know. Thank you!

PAST
Growing up as a Romani in France, life always ended up harder for Esmeralda than the average person. Still, her fierce determination and selflessness always kept her going. Traveling with the rest of her people, Esmeralda earned money by dancing on the streets, as well as at festivals. Not much of a job, but to her, whatever put bread on the table. Unfortunately, Judge Claude Frollo had other plans for the Romani. He wanted to execute them all, and this caused problems when they came to Paris for the Festival of Fools. During the festival, a poor deformed man who she soon discovered to be named Quasimodo was terribly mistreated, having things thrown at him and getting tied up when people realized his face was not a mask. Esmeralda helped him out, of course, but after the fact Frollo captured her for it. She just managed to gain sanctuary by going into the church, thanks to the help of Captain Phoebus, whom she wasn’t quite sure she liked, but didn’t dislike either. She met Quasimodo again while in the church, finding his living quarters in the bell tower to be quite charming, surprised by all his many talents. Quasimodo helped her out of the bell tower, which Esmeralda was incredibly grateful for and she left Quasimodo her map to the Court of Miracles. She fled to safety, but when Phoebus ended up shot at and in the river trying to help her, she took him back to Quasimodo for safekeeping. Once she stitched up his wounds, she returned to the Romani hideout with her people. She didn’t meet Quasimodo and Phoebus again until she found them nearly being hung by Clopin, and she quickly explained they were friends only to find out Frollo was on his way. Esmeralda quickly told her people to evacuate, but Frollo showed up only moments later, and before she knew it she was nailed to a stake ready to be burned to death. Luckily, Quasimodo helped her out of the fire, and though she nearly died, he nursed her back to health. Frollo was defeated, and she, Quasimodo, and Phoebus were safe, as well as the rest of her people. After that, the city of Paris was at peace once more and Esmeralda found herself content to be with Phoebus. Things were good…until the darkness came.
PRESENT
On the outskirts of town there is a hidden camp grounds, full of those who prefer a life of freedom and living off the grid. Esmeralda is one of the leaders of the camp, and though she is quite responsible, she also has a very free spirit. She dances and does street magic performances to earn money, which she then shares with her people at the compound. She knows of the judge’s hate of her people, and is very outspoken about it, claiming that her place is open to all that wish to be free of the tyranny of his hate. She combats the distaste of people who are different with acceptance and love, hoping that one day her people can truly be free.
PERSONALITY
In a world of injustice and turmoil, one would think it would have hardened Esmeralda. But she is very much a kind and loving woman. She’s gentle towards most, but those who harm her people — or any innocent, for that matter — are well advised to stay out of her way. Esmeralda is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in, and she won’t tolerate injustice any longer.

Tennessee. Beautiful place. Ever been?
I haven't, but i'll certainly add it to my list of places to visit.
Well, I suppose you’re right.  But, if it’s any consolation.  I can keep a secret.
Can you, now? Well, that changes everything. And by everything, I mean nothing.
Thank you, truly. You’re a delight to perform for.
Please, every performer deserves an audience. And on the same token, every performer deserves a bit of food afterwards. Would you like to come down to the cafe with me? I’ll pay, of course.Â
What? No, I couldn't possibly let you do that. I'll go with you, if you're still alright with that, but i'll be paying for myself. I really do appreciate the offer, though.
I appreciate your advice, but I really am a klutz!Â
You’re so graceful. How did you learn to dance like that?
Years of practice. Anyone can learn to dance, really.
Thank you for the compliment, though. I can promise you i'm not always graceful.
Simply enchanting.  You sure you’re not a witch?
Mm. Positive, actually. Even if I was, you don't really think I would tell you, do you?
A whole week visiting family can wear on a girl. You up for a drink?
The day I don't accept an offer like that will be a dark day for us all.
Where's family at?
