It was the answer that Akechi had expected from Akira. A complete denial of his own wants and desires, while fully accepting Akechi's own decision. It was, if he was being honest with himself, annoying. Irritating. A level of 'goodness' that felt both forced and fake because there was no way that someone could truly be this way.

Ever the hero. Ever the martyr.

"No. You couldn't." Because Akechi would be gone in a way that there was no coming back from. Even if part of him might have wanted to know that Akira would try to chase him down and drag him back, it wouldn't have mattered. There would be no one to find. It was better to make that clear now, to stop Akira was chasing down a ghost.

One dart thrown.

"You won't be able to find me. Ever."

And the second.

"I know how to make myself disappear. I know how to make myself vanish. There will be no trail for you to follow."

Third dart. All of them, neatly in the bullseye.

Akechi turned to stare hard at Akira. He had to make sure the other understand and that there was no room for misunderstanding here. "Once this is over and this reality is gone, you will never see me again. Do you understand?"

The blunt answer Akira was provided was what he'd come to expect from Akechi in this world they'd found themselves in. Cold. To the point. Akira couldn't try to make him stay. There was no wavering of hesitation, nothing to suggest he had even so much as considered anything further. Once his mind was set, there was nothing to be done to change it.

Not only was there nothing he could do to try to keep him, but there was nothing he could do to find him. Ever. He intended to make himself vanish. To leave nothing behind as evidence. Not a modicum of a trail that could point back.

“The more you stress it, the more you make it sound like a challenge,” was what he chose to answer first, a purposefully flippant answer considering the tone he was addressed with. This was a trait Akechi should recognize in him by now. The more he was told not to do something, the more he sought to see it done out of spite.

Yet despite this, he didn't quite reach the heights of a joking tone either. His shoulders weren't so relaxed to suggest that he had no understanding of what was being conveyed. He had no choice but to set his features himself as he questioned, “Is that really what you want? You could have all the freedom in the world, and the first thing you want to do with it is make sure you never have to see me again?” The prospect stung, but he had to wonder if that was the point. If it was some kind of test.

Akira's words earn nothing more than a snort from Akechi. Was it a challenge? If only. Maybe he should have told him the truth, to make it absolutely clear that there was no fighting against the future that he was proposing. There was no way to find a dead man, especially when Akechi wasn't even sure where his body had wound up. He had died in the metaverse, but in a location that should have mapped over the Diet building in reality. Was his corpse somewhere in the basement, rotting away? Or had he just vanished entirely as a consequence of his failure?

Did it matter either way? Was one better than the other?

The game of darts was slowly forgotten in favor of the conversation, and Akechi's attempts to ensure that his intent was made crystal clear. He could hear Akira's attempt to make a joke, but it came out just a bit flat and sour; even he couldn't fully make himself look at this like it was something funny, or something he had to push past. Stripped of that context, it would be impossible to interpret his words as anything but cruel.

maybe that was the point. Maybe this was what it would take to finally get Akira to realize he was truly damaged in ways unthinkable and unfixable, and that his actions were not something that could be simply overlooked.

Was this what I wanted?

When did he ever get what he wanted?

"I want freedom. I want the ability to make my own decisions. I want to hold my life in my own hands, no one else's." An answer, even if Akira would interpret it incorrectly. After a long moment though, Akechi had to look away. His gaze found a home staring at a spot on the wall, where a beam of light was shining just a little brighter.

"I know the price I have to pay for that, and I know I'm willing to pay it."

Akira glanced at the window, studying the clouds he could barely glimpse through the pane with the same weighty, heavy looked that he tended to use to study people. It was easier to stare out the window for a beat, mentally trying one option than another, rather than pin Akechi with the same stare. For one thing, Akechi didn't necessarily enjoy being stared at like that.

For another, Akira wasn't sure quite what it meant to want to stare at Akechi so deeply.

At the very least, he had seen what the rain sometimes did to Akechi to at least be distantly pleased that the guy was here in LeBlanc rather than out on his own, and he would take that small, distant win for what it was. "You've read plenty but you're not a fan?" he asked, small smile quirking the corner of his mouth, a teasing challenge in his voice. There was nothing wrong with liking romance, as far as Akira was concerned, but liking something and refusing to admit to it was another thing.

Shifting from where he sat to join Akechi at the table, he considered the other's point for a moment. "Is there something you enjoy about romances that keeps you reading them? Unless it's just for the illegal bit," he continued, wrist tapping the book on the table that he still held in his hand. "Or maybe it's the enemies to lovers part?"

It was a bit on the nose whatever it was, and Akira did his darnedest not to think about it. In some way, their own experience could be seen as enemies to lovers, and also happened to be illegal enough to qualify for a romance novel apparently. But so much of it, including fighting god and his old therapist, would probably make the story too incredible to be considered a good romance novel. Probably.

The question was meant to tease him, but Akechi found himself mulling over it probably a bit too seriously; his brow furrowed and his lips pressed tight together, twisting into something that wasn't exactly a frown but wasn't far from one either. Why did he read them if he didn't like them?

"I wanted... to understand."

It was a statement that was too vague, too impossibly large, to be understood. And so, after a moment, Akechi drew in a slow breath before trying to explain. Not that he really wanted or cared if Akira understood, but it was a momentary distraction from the pain that was starting to build behind his left eye. Maybe if he didn't focus on it the headache wouldn't form. Maybe he'd be able to escape the near-blinding agony that came with the rain and the migraines that forced their way into his skull.

"People are willing to excuse anything as long as love is involved. Kidnapping, murder, coercion - it's all swept under the rug, all forgiven and forgotten, because of love. Behavior that should have been a red flag just becomes romantic. It... made it easier to understand how I was supposed to act if I wanted to make the public fall in love with me. And it made easier to understand why... my mother..."

Akechi grimaced as he pinched at the bridge of his nose. The pain was getting worse, forcing him to cut his thought off, though it wouldn't have been hard for Akira to fill in the blanks.

There was the old phrase about the squeaky wheel getting the grease and Akira very much intended to be that wheel. If the financing committee, and anyone else in city government wanted to know peace, then they would come to realize very quickly that if they just saw things his way and didn't cut the funding to the local community centers, it would all go much easier. This wasn't the first of the many meetings he attended, nor would it likely be the last. It wasn't as direct as changing hearts and it was certainly more tedious, but it did seem to have a longer impact on the community, which Akira counted as win.

At least, that was what he hoped was going to happen as he went through his points again, highlighting how investment into the community would only lead to things that the government cared about such as improvement in local business and less crime. He knew it would also help people feel better and just generally be better neighbors, but the feel-good points were saved for the end. Everyone liked feeling good about doing good. For now, he pointed out, every piece of investment put into the community would pay almost double on output, which was better than simply handing the funds to a company to do instead.

Opening his mouth to get to his last point, a disturbance out in the hall drew the eyes of the committee, not to mention the handful of other on-lookers present for the meeting. And a raise voice suddenly grew louder as the door opened, which finally drew Akira's attention to, turning his head slightly to catch who else decided to say some words at the typically boring finance committee meeting.

Ah, Akechi.

The former detective's arrival sent a low murmur through the room as everyone seemed to confirm with their neighbor exactly who had made such a sudden appearance in Tokyo city hall. A slightly brittle smile froze on Akira's mouth for a beat. What would the committee think? Would they see this as a threat? Some hint of corruption at the memory of Shido? Or maybe they would take this as some minor celebrity interest in a local matter, another feel good boost at the end of the presentation?

But his smile warmed, pushing away the thoughts in favor of something bordering on genuine-- which was depressingly unusual for Akira. "Sorry to keep you waiting," he greeted Akechi with a small nod. "I'm almost finished here... unless you had anything to add about the proposed cuts to the budget for the community centers in the city?"

He could pick up on the fact that he had just walked into the middle of something. Just a year ago Akechi would have been far more alert and on edge, eyeing everyone around him and picking up on the murmurs, the shifting body language, the sudden frowns that were being aimed his way. It should have, would have, caused him to pause for at least a moment to think about what he was going to do or say next. The wrong thing would only make the situation worse, and that wasn't his goal.

Not so openly, at least. Being antagonistic but hiding it behind a bright and cheery curtain of pleasantries and flattery was far, far more effective.

-- for better or worse though, that version of Akechi was dead and buried. Maybe he would be resurrected as a pale imitation of himself one day, but in the moment all Akira had for back-up was someone with a sharp tongue, no filter, and no reason to keep his thoughts to himself especially when he thought the people around him were being idiots.

"And what exactly are they going to be spending that money on? Increased police presence? Or hiring more workers to clean up the city? Because all the kids who spend their afternoons at any of the programs run by the kominkan-" The community center. "-will now be on the streets. I'm sure cost of medical care for the elderly who can no longer stay active and involved from their programs would increase as well. So I would have to imagine whatever the funding would be going to has to be something extremely important."

From the unhappy murmuring around him, it was clear that the answer to that was yes - but only important to the people who's pockets would be lined with the funding that would be going their way.

Akechi frowned as he shifted in place, one hand pressing against his hip. "Is that really what you're wasting your time with? Arguing with these idiots about where the funding should go? Because none of them care about anything but their own interests. Have you tried bribing them?"

That certainly got a response that he wasn't able to fully enjoy; the security guard from before had gone in after him, grabbing hold of Akechi's arm and shoulder to start dragging him back and out of the room.

Akechi's swift kill saved him a future disaster-- another set of men were heading up the stairwell on the opposite side of the building. Too much noise and they would've looked over right away. But for the time being, the supplies nearby hid the body well enough to reach the ground floor with time to spare.

"...!" Ludger perkes up at the sight of what he assumes has to be help, given the different outfit he can make out. So when one of the men is about to look up the stairwell, Ludger yanks his chain repeatedly both as a distraction and to signal he's nearby. His tactic works, though the good deed doesn't go unpunished as the one watching over him backhands him with a grumble to stop fidgeting.

Thanks to Julius and Ludger's combined efforts, the ground floor consisted of seven people: the man on the phone barely holding onto his patience, two loiterers at the bottom of the stairs who were preoccupied looking at Ludger, Ludger's personal watchdog, a dissociated smoker on a crate, and two roamers. The rest were either sent outside to check if Julius was nearby or further into the building past a rusted metal door behind Ludger.

Massive shelves lined the left wall, all stacked tall with clutter and unfinished steel beams. Further north lay a crane someone must've abandoned midway through the job given a crate swung from its hook. Two freighter steel crates stacked on top the other sat a few paces south. Continuing the eye from behind them, Ludger was on full display. The smack from a moment ago left a red patch on his pale skin, but otherwise he didn't show any injuries.

The man on the phone's shouting combined with the two roamers moving crates and barrels around would easily muffle anything below the loud clinking of Ludger's chains or an non-silenced gunshot. Although from the orders for Julius to quit stalling and get shit together within the next half hour, time's ticking down. Even so, Julius does his best to keep the conversation looping to provide noise.

Such is the Kresnik brothers-- neither can truly sit still and want to help until the bitter end.

The sudden sound of the chains being jerked had Akechi freezing for a moment before he bit back a curse. Another moment, and a feeling of just what was he thinking- that was answered quickly enough when he saw one of the men turning back to deal with Ludger. It was nothing more than a backhand, though it did look painful.

Idiot. Akechi would have figured something out on his own. That wasn't needed, even if the gesture was... kind, he supposed.

The motion did show one thing for Akechi. Ludger's hands were bound, but his legs seemed to be free. Amateurs. The issue was getting his hands free. Maybe he could try to get the cuffs off of whatever they were hooked on, but there was no guarantee that could be done, or that it wouldn't take too long. Maybe picking the cuffs?

I could just try shooting the chain. Akechi let the thought sit for a moment before snorting and shaking his head. Sure. And the bullet would, at best, just ricochet off and alert the guards. At worst, it would find a way to embed itself into Ludger's skull.

Julius was willing to overlook a lot, but that seemed like it would be pushing it just a bit too far.

It was as his eyes were scanning the available options that a thought finally occurred. Sometimes the simplest plan was the best one. The goal wasn't to catch or stop the guys, it was to get Ludger out alive and preferably unharmed. The easiest way for that to happen would be to get rid of the guys that were watching over him. Akechi could lure them into a cat and mouse game, shoving over shelves and dragging them into dark corners to kill them. Or something could happen that would force them all to run.

Keeping down low, Akechi lifted his phone to snap a quick picture of Ludger as proof that he was here and close to the younger Kresnik. It was sent with another request:

Akechi -> Julius: can you set the building on fire?

On the bright side, if this plan failed Akechi was likely dying with Ludger, so Julius would have that comfort.

Akira took it as some mark of success that Akechi didn't try to keep him from coming to his place. He'd never actually had the chance to visit the other's apartment, and it wasn't for lack of trying. He'd dropped hints and left opportunities for the two of them to hang out at some place besides LeBlanc or any of the other random hangouts around Tokyo, but Akechi had never taken the bait. Probably on purpose, Akira had began to wonder, but he didn't push it. Akira wanted to leave the guy some privacy, and he'd always been something of a private person.

Then again, the fact that Akechi didn't protest his coming along might be a sign that he was doing worse off than Akira figured. Worried eyes cut to Akechi's face again, trying to get a read on the guy besides 'miserable' and 'wet' but there wasn't much more he could really get out of him from the moment. Not when Akira was also miserable and wet.

The jacket was a gesture in futility, he realized it almost as soon as he lifted it above his own head, but a small bubble of happiness grew in his chest as Akechi took the other side. Pleased and trying his darnedest not to be that Akechi had taken his gesture in stride.

"I thought you said it was close," he almost whined, glancing up at the ominous sky, wondering what else it might offer before ducking his head to focus on making progress.

Akechi's place came sooner than he expected and was much nicer than he would have thought it might be. Blinking owlishly as he passed into the entry way, he quickly clocked the many signs of elegance just from inside the door, automatically reaching up to try to tame his hair slightly, even if it was pressed flat against his forehead. Shuffling back on his coat, he managed a small nod to the security guard, a weak attempt at being friendly, before he followed in Akechi's wake.

He felt a little bit guilty standing on such a nice floor and steadily dripping but there wasn't much he could do about it. "What floor are you on?" he asked curiously, the gentle ding of the elevator sounding to indicate the doors would be opening soon.

When they did slide open, Akira was greeted with subtle wood paneling around three of the walls, with a mirror on the wall holding the elevator door and button pad. Very elegant indeed, and he felt even more out of place.

"This is close." Closer than trying to run back to LeBlanc. On a normal day, the walk - barely three minutes - wouldn't have even registered. Today's storm was anything but normal, though, and those few minutes felt like they had dragged on for an eternity.

Akechi didn't answer Akira's question, instead just choosing to hit the button himself. It was '5', but anyone with a keen eye would notice that the numbers skipped 4.

Of course he would live on the that floor.

Elevator doors opened, and a short awkward and damp shuffle later had them in front of his apartment door. It could be unlocked but there was a small black square on the wall by it with a red light that turned green when Akechi pressed a fob up against it, and the door clicked to signify it was open afterward.

"There are two cats, but you probably won't see much of them. They're both pretty skittish around strangers." Words that Akechi spoke in full confidence, and words that would be quickly shown to be wrong.

They were both soaked, which meant there was no hope of sitting around and drying in the clothing they were currently wearing unless they wanted to wind up sick or with a rash or something worse. There was a gesture made for Ren to take his shoes off and to stay there in the entrance of the apartment as Akechi hurried off to his room with the goal of digging up something that the other could wear. An old t-shirt and shorts would have to make due until the rest of his clothing dried. That, and a towel so that Akira could actually dry himself.

He hurried back out-

-and halted at the sight of a wet Akira sitting on the sofa, and both cats treating him like he was the most fascinating person in the world.

"What--" That was all Akechi could sputter out for the moment before he shook his head. "Big. Little." Akira could figure out which name belonged to which cat. "And-- and get up! You're getting the sofa wet." The spare clothing was thrust out against Akira's chest as Akechi pointed to the door by the entranceway.

"There's a bathroom in there. Go get changed. You can leave the wet clothing in the dryer."

"Nice to meet you, Felix," Akira replied politely, words clipped short, terse. It was a habitual greeting, something he said before he even realized what he said. Because it was not nice to meet this person, this not-Akechi. Not at all.

I'm going to be sick, I'm going to be sick, rattled around his mind as his eyes cut away, staring at the distant wasll as he tried to master himself. Again, he could just leave. Drag his sorry self back to the regular world and probably mope for a bit, even as he did his best not to show it. He didn't want to think about what it meant that there was a boy hear who could have been Akechi's twin, Akechi's ghost.

But where would that get him? Last time he tried to resist the pull of this cognitive place, he found himself dropped unceremoniously in the middle of it. And while he didn't think Lavenza was as powerful as the god who used Akechi and himself as play things, he didn't really want to push her to it.

What was that about free will again?

He didn't miss the question about safety for not-Akechi versus the world, tucking that thought away for a moment. Forcing back broiling emotions, he forced himself to look at not Ake--Felix. "Are you curious about the human world?" he asked, trying to keep his question as neutral sounding as possible and failing miserably.

His denial would be disappointing, but Lavenza would have accepted it. While it was normal for attendants of the Velvet Room to receive assistance from the current chosen Wild Card, it was never something that they had to do. Free will and choice were important and Lavenza didn't want to force Akira to make a decision he would hate.

She might hope but... this was not a usual or normal situation. It was understandable that he would balk at it. And in that case, she would just have to accept it and would just need to wait for there to be a new Wild Card. It would happen, sooner or later.

-- but he didn't, despite the clear reluctance that he felt.

She watched the way he spoke with 'Felix', clear reluctance seeping through each word that came out from between clenched teeth. This is cruel. This is not something that should be asked of him. But for the moment, there was no one else to ask.

... also untrue, but it was difficult to imagine that any of the other living Wild Cards would be willing to work with Felix. Though without the knowledge of who he really was, then perhaps...

Felix watched Akira curiously, head canting ever-so-slightly at the question that was finally aimed at him. "I suppose. The human world is what we're meant to protect, or something like that. But I do not need a guide. I can learn about it on my own."

Lavenza frowned and Felix sighed, his stance relaxing as he shrugged his shoulders. "Unfortunately that is not allowed. So it puts me at your mercy, which you clearly are reluctant to give. My understanding is that is due to the fact that I bear a resemblance to someone you once knew."

A topic that should have been handled with more grace, but he preferred simply barreling ahead into it.

In all honesty, he'd thought about what he'd do differently if he had the chance quite a bit. How could he not? So many things he could have done, so many things he could've not. What would've been different?

"But, if I could, I would've told you upfront that we were onto you. I got too caught up in the cat-and-mouse game. I should've seen that you needed help and given it to you, instead of trying to come up with a crazy plan to fake my own death."

The comment about Shido was expected, and Akechi wasn't surprised to hear that Ren would have simply double-downed and actually assaulted him. Would that have changed anything? It was hard to make his punishment worse when the punishment was made under the assumption that he had hit Shido. But Shido would have found a way, or maybe he would have simply made sure that he didn't forget Ren's face.

Inevitably something about how he had been handled would be altered too, but he was surprised to hear just what Ren would have done. "What?" While he had been previously only half paying attention to the conversation, Ren's answer had Akechi's head snapping to the side to stare at him.

"What are you talking about? I never needed help. I needed-"

A pause, deep breath, and a shake of his head.

"-- I would have found another way to put a real bullet in your head if you tried."

He had no idea why he had accepted Kitagawa's invitation to come over for dinner. In retrospect, perhaps Akechi should have taken this as a sign that he really wasn't doing well if even the artist was concerned for him and wanted to make sure he was eating enough. It wasn't like he was purposefully trying to worry people, but the result was still the same.

"This is your... room." Home wasn't the right word for it since it was a dorm room, but even saying room didn't feel right. There was no bed (there was a sleeping mat rolled up), and half-finished paintings covered the walls and the floor, along with a healthy splattering of paint-- everywhere. Akechi felt like there wasn't anywhere he could go or touch without becoming paint stained himself.

The home-cooked meal that Kitagawa had offered for him was ramen. Instant ramen in a styrofoam cup.

"You... did not need to invite me over." That sounded harsh, but was still true. Akechi blinked before drawing in a deep breath as he looked back at Kitagawa. "I... I appreciate the thought, but... is this... is this how you live?"

And just like that- it was like a door was being slammed shut, firmly cutting himself off from any of the comfort that was being offered toward him, held out hesitantly and cautiously but still held out.

It was clear to anyone with eyes that Akechi was getting worse. Considering he was under near-constant observation, it didn't make any sense and shouldn't have been possible. He wasn't doing everything perfectly, but he was following the guidelines of his probation. He was reporting to and working with both Sojiro and Sae. He was staying within the confines of the city. He had dropped most of his illegal activities (he couldn't help but break traffic laws). He was going to therapy!

All of that, and yet Akechi still seemed to just be wasting away in front of anyone who noticed.

No appetite, no interest in doing-- anything. Visible weight loss. He could focus and hold it together when he had to, like when he was working or if he was driving, but left on his own it wasn't uncommon for Akechi to just sit (or stand) and do... nothing.

He would have just sat until he withered away at his home, except the cats there would pull him out of it by even going far enough to swipe at him to get him to focus.

I'm going insane.

It was fitting, honestly. His brain had been important to him, and now it was going. Soon he wouldn't know what was real and what was fake and that... that was what he deserved. He'd deal with it by himself.

Red eyes narrowed at Futaba. "If I wanted some useless shut-in's help, I would have asked you. Stop acting like you care about me, or like I care about you."
