This blog is a hand-curated repository of straight-up, 'ol school funky music, and anecdotes from my collection and experiences, representing some sung - but mostly unsung heroes of funk. The 1970's funk era has not reached its full measure of appreciation: not even close. it may never. Public recognition - by and large posthumous. We know this may actually be a good thing: once the masses have it, they will be compelled to deprecate, degenerate, destroy, and jetitson it. Unfortunately, pre-Internet, and primarily a phenomenon in a country (yeah, this one) that invariably was ignorant of it, or simply couldn't appreciate it. 1960's - 1970's funk was a pop-music Renaissance, Yet due to its under-interpretation, under-appreciation, and under amplification (distribution, exposure), it may be years before the Hoos in Hoos'ville devote a summer museum exhibit to it. And only then, after it has demonstrably become fashionable and somehow marketable (line some capitalist's pockets. There were perhaps as many as 1,000 (rough-guess) small, unknown talents, who were mostly spotted around the big cities of America. The circuit was hard-knocks - they didn't make a lot of dough. Early artists faced blatant segregation and racism. They rarely got national airings. Finally, we still rejoice in supporting the many pioneer artists I feature who are still on the road today, as well as the wonderful burgeoning stock of young enlightened funk artists who know a good thing when they hear it, and learning to contribute to its growth. In between the shorter posts, as time allows, I will put up longer and more detailed works featuring assorted musicians and related stories. I'll never get to it all, but somebody has to be here, not just to roll-out regurgitated playlists, but to tell the tale, for our Funkateers of tomorrow to hear. Funk is its own reward.
