Omg someone's gotta post Tara's ig
sorrryyy I know this was from days ago and someone has probably already posted it by now (if this is the post you were talking about and not an IG story I completely missed? but I assume it was this one given how I like to go on about women in the music industry…) and I’m going it post it anyway
just for Niall’s comment, and because there’s a quote that’s been rattling around in my head for the past few days: “A pop star is the head of an enormous business that sells one product: [them]self.” (Alexis Okeowo, The New Yorker).
There was something that always vaguely unsettled me about the boys club which seemed to control how One Direction was marketed to a primarily female audience. They were so young and inexperienced when they signed to Syco, it’s hard to hold that against the 1D guys. And to their credit they were always super respectful of their female fanbase - while to a certain extent exploiting them for massive financial gain.
But going solo, Niall had the maturity and bargaining power to choose who he wanted to work with in building the business around his own name, and I am really happy that he has chosen to work with some great women to do that. Having the likes of Michelle Jubelirer (Capitol COO), Mitra Darab (head of marketing), Ambrosia Healy (head of media) and Kate Denton (head of branding & licensing until recently) at the executive level has no doubt influenced his business decisions and helped bring more women into his team too. I think that is a huge reason why the way that Niall is sold appeals to me so much more than a lot of other male artists.
So I agree with him - go on the girls (women) behind his first solo AMA (among a long list of achievements this year). They’ve done a phenomenal job, and it’s really nice to see how much he appreciates everyone who has helped him build his business.
