could snake be alive?
when grell is introduced as a grim reaper, she says “death gods can use cinematic record to relive te memories of those on the to-die list, for assessment. what kind of person is he? what kind of life had he led? whether to let him live on? or to kill him?”.
so they can choose to let a person live.
if anyone is unfamiliar, there is a compositional principle called chekhov's gun. if you hang a rifle on the wall in the first act, then it has to fire in the next one. otherwise, don’t put it there in the first place. and knowing yana, i don’t think she would introduce that plot point without planning to use it later (unless she already has and we just do not know it yet). so it's safe to assume someone will be brought back by grim reapers.
usually when we see a grim reaper with a person’s card, they have already stamped “completed” on it. (chapters 35, 53, 102, 105, 128 and probably many more).
there is at least one time we didn’t see the stamp but it was during the luxury liner arc and we’ve got like hundreds of people killed and showed at the same time so i’d say it’s an exception.
however with snake there’s no stamp saying “completed”. we have a sound for a heavy thud, but don’t see it directly so who knows, maybe they have a stamp with “in progress” or “brought back” or something similar.
at the end of chapter 209 there is the note “that soul is/will be merely judged coldly.” using anything other than the past tense when the narrative wants us to think that his judgment has already been completed is an interesting choice.
“but only souls that can be of use have the right to survive” — but we do not know what exactly awaits snake. unlike the rest of the servants, we never saw him kill anyone on ciel's orders or in his defense. he died protecting a child. in the end, he did not choose either doll’s side or ciel’s. maybe in the future he was meant to do something that would make the grim reapers consider him worthy of revival.
some people hope that undertaker, persuaded by doll, will turn him into a bizarre doll, but that seems less likely to me. a grim reaper is right there on the scene, and i doubt they would leave her running around freely when
he saw her in snake’s memories and know the bond between them, so it is logical to assume she would want to bring him back to life = more work for them
every previous time they encountered bizarre dolls, they attacked them to neutralize them because they are aberrations that should not exist.
perhaps i’m delulu and reading too much into it, but at the same time yana has left subtle clues so many times before that i cannot shake the feeling that all of this was intentional on her part
