Nora Barrows-Friedman launches timely book on student push for Palestinian rights

It was standing room only at Berkeley's La Pena Hall November 6, when Nora Barrows-Friedman launched her great new book In Our Power: U.S. Students Organize for Justice in Palestine. The book is built around interviews with 70 of the leading activists and organizers in the student movement for justice in Palestine-- and it could not be more timely! As Nora noted in her presentation at La Pena-- and at the following evening's reading at SF's modern Times bookstore-- the student justice movement continues to grow, learn, and become more creative, even while new waves of repression have been launched against it by well-funded supporters of the current Israeli government and their allies in state and local governments and even within university administrations.

R. Falk launches Palestine book in NYC, Washington DC!

In the third week of October, Just World Books worked with wonderful partners to hold two great launch events for Palestine: The Legitimacy of Hope, by the distinguished international jurist Richard Falk. The first of these, hosted by the NGO Working Group at the United Nations on Israel/Palestine, was held in a conference room of the U.N. Church Center, overlooking the main U.N. building in New York. The second was hosted by the Palestine Center in Washington, DC.

Gareth Porter adds timely realism to Iran/nuclear discussion

As diplomats from the "P5+1" countries and Iran approach the November 24 deadline for completing their negotiation over the scope of Iran's nuclear-technology program, Gareth Porter, author of the recent (Feb. 2014) book Manufactured Crisis: The Untold Story of the Iran Nuclear Scare, is now injecting timely new facts and information about the history of the Iranian program into the worldwide discussion of this crucial issue.

Miko Peled, Laila El-Haddad touring internationally with their books

Our great author Miko Peled is briefly back in the United States after touring with his transformational memoir The General's Son: Journey of an Israeli in Palestine in Palestine, Switzerland, Denmark, and Norway! In Copenhagen, Peled was present at the launch of the Danish-language version of The General's Son, published by Boedal. He was also able to meet the family of the late Palestinian author, Ghassan Kanafani.

Peled will be back in Europe in the second half of October. You can see some portions of the media coverage that came out of his recent visit to Norway, below.

While Peled was in Europe, Laila E-Haddad

was in Malaysia, where she helped launch the English-for-ASEAN editions of The Gaza Kitchen: A Palestinian Culinary Journey (which she co-authored with Maggie Schmitt), and Gaza Mom, Abridged Edition. These two ASEAN-market-only editions are published by Saba Islamic Media of Kuala Lumpur, which also has ASEAN rights to The General's Son and our very moving recent short-story anthology, Gaza Writes Back.

Brant Rosen & JVP colleagues issue strong statement on Gaza.

Rabbi Brant Rosen, author of Wrestling in the Daylight: A Rabbi's Path to Palestinian Solidarity, is the co-chair of the Rabbinical Council of Jewish Voice for Peace. Today, the Council issued a very moving statement on Gaza, in which they called upon the government of Israel "to end its military onslaught, which we believe will only lead to more tragedy for Jews and Palestinians alike."

Our authors have recently been making some great contributions to the discourse in the United States, Britain, and internationally! Just so far this week, Gareth Porter, author of Manufactured Crisis: The Untold Story of the Iran Nuclear Scare, has been on the "Conversations with Great Minds" segment of the Thom Hartmann show, and on Democracy Now! with Amy Goodman. In both cases he was talking about the prospects for the fast-approaching deadline for the Iran nuclear talks... Meanwhile, with the crisis in Gaza continuing, Laila El-Haddad, the author of Gaza Mom (2010) and co-author of The Gaza Kitchen: A Palestinian Culinary Journey (2012), was on the BBC World Service's flagship "Newshour" program, on Monday. (She comes on at around minute 5:00.)

Kipnis Book on 1973 War Sparks New Debate among Historians

Yigal Kipnis’s 1973: The Road to War is a “fascinating, and highly engaging study” in the words of historian Craig Daigle, whose review of the book in the online academic journal H-Diplo is part of a growing acknowledgment of the work’s valuable contribution in documenting the political antecedents to the war. 1973: The Road to War is also featured in this summer’s issue of Israel Studies Review, where historian Galia Golan describes it as “extremely well-documented” and a “fascinating—if controversial account.” Both academics agree that Kipnis has offered a unique and significant addition to scholarship on the Yom Kippur War.
