Major Project - Evaluation
For my project i choose to undertake a site specific research project based upon the ruined Yester Castle with its subterranean Goblin ha - and also looking into both the folklore surrounding it and the nature of folklore in general.
I undertook numerous trips to the site and collected photographs, videos and a number of field recordings.
My goal was to try and reflect the atmosphere and ambience of the area - whilst capturing the strange and mysterious folklore that makes this an amazing place.
I recorded around 50 or so field recordings and very quickly realised that audio/sound art would for the main focal point of this piece. I started using a program called Reaper which previous to this I had never used and set myself the goal of trying to work it out/program a coherent audio piece from it.
Focusing on the natural sounds and ambience, i edited and cut all of the recordings that I had made, to form jigsaw pieces that I could work with and program into a final product.
The final piece is aprox 5 minutes long and all the sounds heard are from natural recordings apart from a recital at the end. When I was in the Goblin Ha’ i decided to perform a reading of Sir Walter Scott “Marmion” - a stanza in which the “Wizard of Yester” Sir Hugo de Giffard was mentioned in and which contains the main basis for the folklore of the area.
“A clerk could tell what years have flown Since Alexander filled our throne,
Third monarch of that warlike name, And eke the time when here he came To seek Sir Hugo, then our lord;
A braver never drew a sword;
A wiser never, at the hour
Of midnight, spoke the word of power: The same, whom ancient records call The founder of the Goblin Hall. I would, Sir Knight, your longer stay Gave you that cavern to survey.
Of lofty roof, and ample size, Beneath the castle deep it lies: To hew the living rock profound, The floor to pave, the arch to round, There never toiled a mortal arm - It all was wrought by word and charm; And I have heard my grandsire say, That the wild clamour and affray
Of those dread artisans of hell, Who laboured under Hugo’s spell, Sounded as loud as ocean’s war Among the caverns of Dunbar. The king Lord Gifford’s castle sought, Deep labouring with uncertain thought: Even then he mustered all his host,
To meet upon the western coast: For Norse and Danish galleys plied Their oars within the frith of Clyde. There floated Haco’s banner trim, Above Norwayan warriors grim,
Savage of heart, and large of limb; Threatening both continent and isle, Bute, Arran, Cunninghame, and Kyle. Lord Gifford, deep beneath the ground, Heard Alexander’s bugle sound, And tarried not his garb to change, But, in his wizard habit strange,
Came forth—a quaint and fearful sight: His mantle lined with fox-skins white; His high and wrinkled forehead bore A pointed cap, such as of yore Clerks say that Pharaoh’s Magi wore:
His shoes were marked with cross and spell, Upon his breast a pentacle;
His zone, of virgin parchment thin,
Or, as some tell, of dead man’s skin,
Bore many a planetary sign,
Combust, and retrograde, and trine;
And in his hand he held prepared
A naked sword without a guard”
My aim for the audio piece was me trying to explore the uncertainty and mysterious nature of the area, i wanted to make the listen uncertain as to what the were listening to or being a part of, if it brought up emotions or feelings etc. I wanted to reflect the feelings of exploration and looking into the past as a form of ritual.
The second part of this piece was using the photographs that I had taken to go with the audio. Focusing on the strongest images - the ones that most reflect the feelings of the area I used a scanner and photocopy machine to degrade and unfocus the images - again, trying to reflect the feelings of uncertainty and mystery that you get there and again - in folklore in general.
I also printed out some quotes from Marmion and manipulated these as well using similar methods - dragging them across the scanner and scanning them again etc
Combining the text and the images by layering using acetates and continuous scanning again i used the 6 best ones and printed them onto heavy stock grey card - which was purely an aesthetic decision.
Lastly I printed out another manipulated image and printed this onto a large envelope which would house the prints and the audio which was burned onto an unmarked CD. I wanted the package to have no information on it in anyway - again, leaving the listener/viewer to make their minds up as to what this was.
The very last part of the piece was my previous tumblr post - i wanted to create own mythology and folklore for this item so described finding it in the Goblin Ha and with no reference to me making it - this was a very important part of the piece and one that I am extremely happy with.
Overall, i am very happy with the outcome and happy that I have learned new skills and new techniques to move forward with. On the down side, my scheduling and application still needs a lot of work - i have to take more responsibility for giving it all and doing the best that i possibly can through further self directed application.
