Taking a deep sip from his coffee Wilcome through the window to the street outside. He still couldn’t believe that he was in America. Let alone New York. Putting the coffee down Wilcome returned to his class preparation. Chewing on his pen he muttered out loud, “Now what play should I put forward to be performed this year?” Flicking through his notes on the many pre approved scripts. “I just don’t want do Shakespeare or The Crucible you know?” Wilcomes heart skipped a beat at the reply

Josh had been doing his rounds filling empty coffee mugs when he heard the other man’s question. He wasn’t sure he was talking to him, but that didn’t stop him from answering. Any kind of conversation was welcome from the tedious cleaning he was suppose to be doing. “M’not sure what’s deem acceptable nowadays. I think when I was at school, they did a PG version of Grease? That or Guys and Dolls? It’s too long ago to remember honestly.”

“Hey wait!” Jackson called out after the person who’d just left the line in front of him, “you forgot your change.” He held up a ten dollar bill. “If it was twenty years ago, and we were talking about teenage me– god would this have been my lucky day. Sucks growing up.” 

Half jumping at the words, Josh did a quick check of his pockets before realising the mistake he had made. “Ah shit, thanks.” He said, taking the bill from the other. “S’pose I should thank my lucky stars I haven’t run into your teenage self. Would have made tryin’ to get lunch later a little awkward. Ten dollars still means somethin’ to me unlike some others.”

She had managed to get locked out of her apartment – again. All she’d planned to do was step outside for a minute, at most. Dylan had intended the trip to be so short that she hadn’t even grabbed her phone. She knew, was absolutely sure, that it was sitting uselessly right beside her stupid useless keys on the table right beside her door. “Useless. Goddamn useless.” She muttered, giving the doorknob one last attempt that she knew would be unsuccessful. Stepping back, the blonde eyed the second story window she knew was unlocked. Blue eyes scanned the streets before she sighed, rolling an empty curbside garbage bin toward the window. She climbed onto it very slowly, trying her hardest to avoid breaking her neck in addition to breaking and entering. She had just steadied herself and reached up to open the window when she felt eyes on her. “Look, whatever it is, I don’t have it. I don’t have change, I don’t have time to talk about Jesus, I don’t have it. Everything I have, including my stupid useless keys, are in there.” She said in a long, exasperated sigh before steadying her grip on the window’s ledge and slightly turning to give the other a tight-lipped smile.

Josh had been out for a jog when he spotted the blonde on top of the bin and he stopped dead in his tracks, eying her precariously. For a moment, he wondered whether he should call someone. The police might have been a good idea, but he shivered at the thought. Over his dead body. Instead he decided to approach the scene himself. It may not have been the wisest idea, but not many people had described Josh as intellectual in his past. “Is that your way of saying you’re tryin’ to break into your own apartment?” He said, moving to stand next the bin she’s stood on. “Because if you’re tryin’ to rob this place in broad daylight, you may be the second dumbest criminal I’ve ever met.”

After several attempts in her mission to grab a book from the top shelf and failing to reach it each time, India resorted to stepping up on a shelf but nearly falling startled her and really they didn’t want to cause a scene. So the brunette turned to the person nearby.

“Could you, uhh — give me a hand? I’m sorry to bother you and all but it’s probably better for all of us if I don’t topple over these shelves.”

Josh had been watching the other out of the corner of his eye, wondering just what they were reaching for even though he didn’t step forward to lend a hand. If they need it, they would ask. And they did. Turning to face them like he hadn’t been paying attention the whole time, Josh stepped over to offer his assistance. “No trouble at all, Ma’am. Glad to put my height to use, otherwise we’d probably be stuck under an avalanche of books. Which one you wantin’?”

FRIEND OF A FRIEND | JOSH & LIBBY  — @libby-rigby

Josh wasn’t quite sure what had led him to the library. Perhaps it was the need to get out of his apartment and he didn’t have to pay to get into the building. Or maybe it was the desire to read anything that wasn’t to do with the latest celebrity gossip. His only current reading was the newspapers left scattered around Mucher’s for the customers. They helped pass the time during the slow periods of the day, but he was fed up of the doom and gloom in the world. He got it, life sucked and people did bad things. Hell, he had been one of those people once upon a time. Josh didn’t need reminding of how easy it was to break the law. Instead he needed a reprieve from that, and the library was the best place to find that. It was cheaper than an actual book shop.

Shuffling down the aisles, Josh was lost as to what he actually wanted to read. He couldn’t remember the last time he had read for fun. It felt weird to even think about it that way. The last thing he had read had been some history books supplied by the prison, but he didn’t think he could stomach another one just yet. So instead he looked around for some help. Perhaps someone around here would be able to recommend something good. His eyes landed on the girl behind the help desk, but he instantly froze as they did. Why did she look so familiar? He couldn’t put his finger on it straight away, so instead he simply stared, sifting through his memory to try place her.

“Oh, you know how much I appreciate you, mo mhuirnín,” she purred. “But if it’s some stroking you need, I’m sure we can figure something out…” Taking the proffered bottle, she brought it to her lips, taking a careful and deliberate drink. “If you’re off the clock, does that mean you can join me?” 

"See, that wasn’t so hard, was it?” He said, smirk still firmly on his face as he leaned down on the other side of the counter with his elbows. “Didn’t anyone ever tell you not to make offers that can’t be refused? It’ll get you into trouble, y’know.” Josh stared at Grace for a second or two with a raised brow before standing up straight, moving to the fridge to pull out his own beer bottle. “It’s like you can read my mind. Though I ain’t sure how well this’ll end. This stuff could be like lighter fluid for all I know.”

“Oh, you love me and you know you do.” Issy shot him a gentle smile as she leant over to wrap an arm around him. “Come on, let’s go and get take out and have a picnic in the park.” She wanted to spend the day with Josh, simply because she thoroughly enjoyed having him around. The blonde knew not many knew him well, for whatever reasons they had, but she’d gotten along with him the moment they met. She wouldn’t have any other friend. “What’ve you been up to, anyway?”

“Well, if was it true, you know I would never openly admit it so...” He looked down at her with a grin. It was the best he could do really. Josh wasn’t the type to go around and declaring how much he cared about his friends. Even if it was true. "But you’re pretty cool, so I suppose spending the day with you won’t kill me. As long as we avoid Muncher’s. It’s too depressin’ to go into work on my only day off.” With that, he put his arm around her in return and began leading them to the closest take out joint he could think of. “Other than servin’ coffee? Not a lot, honestly. It feels like it’s been years since I’ve had some free time. How about you? How’s the museum?”

I just wanted to pick up my paycheck and I braved the weather because I really need that hundred bucks,” Temple says, a slight whine to their voice. Money was tight these last few weeks, thankfully their mom had paid rent but that still meant Temple had to pay for everything else, somehow. 

A smile spread onto Josh’s lips as he realised it was Temple who had interrupted his day dreaming. Shifting on his feet, he moved to stand in their way, blocking the path towards the back. “Good luck reaching from down there, T. But you should know by now never to step foot in here when you ain’t workin’. Someone’s likely to rope you into helpin’.”

She gave the man a nod and a smile, before taking a seat over at the counter. “Yeah, I don’t think that look really works well on anyone,” She replied, picking up a piece of her wet blonde hair. “I probably look like a clown right now, so I’m relieved you didn’t scream or kick me out as soon as I walked in.” Brooke added with chuckle. “And no, I’ll just take it black. Thank you.” 

"Believe me, we’ve seen scarier sights than you in here.” He had seen scarier sights in his day to day life before Lanford. Though all of that was behind him now. There was no need to confront the shadows in dark alleyways any more. “It’s nothing a cup of coffee won’t fix. Unless you want a cloth or somethin’ to help dry off?” He asked with a raised brow, placing the mug in front of her.

Josh stared at the other for a moment or two, taking in her words. Maybe he didn’t know Lanford as well as he originally thought he did. “I might be thinkin’ of somewhere else. Mine was a takeout joint on the corner of... somewhere.” He said with a slight shrug of his shoulders, trying to hide his embarrassment at the mix up. “Can’t say I’d ever dine somewhere with five stars anyway. I’d rather not sell a kidney for the smallest portion of pasta I’ve ever seen.”

Ava stopped in the middle of the door when she heard a voice signal to her that they were closed. She could have sworn this place closed a little later than the rest of the restaurants on the street. “Really?” She asked out with a small pout and then dropped her hands by her side. “Well, I’m really sorry to bother you, I was certain the restaurant was open for a little while later — but, do you know if there’s another that’s still open around here? I haven’t eaten all day.”

"Honestly, I think they all closed a little earlier to get home whilst the rain was still light. There might be a bakery further down the road, though, but I can’t guarantee it’s open.” He half felt bad for the woman, sending her on a wild goose chase for food that might not even work out. It was why he took a deep breath, coming up with a solution that met in the middle. “But, we might have something in the back. Probably not nutritious but it would be some sustenance all the same.”

          It was only a few minutes to her apartment, but Sierra still stood there in shock and refused to move until she could understand exactly what had happened. Fifteen minutes before she had been saying goodbye to friends and finishing up her drinks, a night that had been fun and well-deserved, but now she was stood covered in llama spit. Why did you do it? The sober part of her brain groaned at the in-control drunken part and her only answer was a long, disgusted sigh. Hearing the sniggers from the sidewalk, Sierra was half tempted to flick the spit again but was interrupted by an extended hand and a dish cloth. “Thanks—” She grumbled, taking the cloth from him. “It fucking stinks, can you smell it?” She wrinkled her nose and tried not to gag, remembering to breathe in through her mouth for the time being. “I’m sticking to dogs from now on.”

A smile still sat on his face as he replayed the scene in his mind over and over again. Honestly, he wished he had been able to capture the incident on video, if only to give himself a pick me up days down the line. Josh did try to keep his face straight as the brunette talked however, so as to not add insult to injury. If he had been in her position, who knows how well he would have handled it. "No, I can definitely smell that. Kinda smells like somethin’ died in its mouth, if I’m bein’ honest.” He wrinkled his nose at his words, having hoped the stench would disappear as he got used to it, though he was having no luck. “Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think dogs can slobber all over you too, if you aren’t careful. Though I suppose they’re nicer about it.”

In retrospect, she should’ve been more careful about being alone with a complete stranger in the middle of the night, but she didn’t have much of a choice, and she’s always had a trusting nature, anyway. However, his comment rose some suspicion. “What are you trying to say?”

Joshua shook his head at the brunette’s question, realising it wasn’t particularly appropriate to joke about help doing his own job. Especially if the person he was talking to was a completely and utter stranger. “Nothing, it don’t matter. Have a seat, just stay clear of the booths, yeah? I’ve still gotta wipe them down.”

Her apartment hadn’t even been that far away from the diner, but with it pouring outside, it seemed much further than it actually was. “But really, if you’re in a rush to close shop or anything, I can get out of your hair.” 

“Trust me, Ma'am, I ain’t in any rush. M'hopin’ the storm will have blown over by the time I leave.” With one last look at the rain racing down the windows, Josh moved behind the counter to turn on the coffee machine. “The drown rat look don’t work as well on me as it does others.” Josh joked with a smile at the blonde. “You take milk or sugar?”

“Bullshit.” Harlow told him with a little snort when he tried to lie to her. Of course she should have known the moment he’d told her that he had done some shit that he would not be receptive to her old occupation. Little did he know that she’d been kicked off the force because they couldn’t find any proof to send her to jail, so perhaps they weren’t all that different the both of them. “Nah, I think that I’m perfectly fine here.” The blonde walked past him and settled on a nearby chair. Maybe she was busy and didn’t have the time to play this stupid game with him, but torment always rilled her up a little bit. “You’re going to have to kick me out, Smith.” She said as she eyed him, almost daring him to do so.

Josh hadn’t known the blonde for too long, but she was one of the first people he met when he moved to Lanford. They had been friendly, perhaps even friends, but now they were nothing close to that. As soon as he found out she used to work for the police force, he froze around her. He no longer felt like he could be himself. The knowledge made him feel awkward and out of place, but now he had goen and stuck his foot in it, riling d her up enough to keep her around. Well aware that she was not leaving anytime soon with his current methods, he sighed, hoping a new tactic would rid of her sooner rather than later. ”Let’s start again. What do you want, Harlow?”
