Just in case you forget this exists.
It exists.
With those “when you want to design a character but you don’t know color theory” posts flying around I thought this would be relevant again.
SLAMs THE REBLOG BUTTON
there’s also Coolors website that gives you randomized palettes!
Don’t forget ColourLovers, either! It’s a social media-esque site where you can browse tons of palettes and share your own.
You can browse the most popular ones or search for certain colors, themes, and even specific hex codes!
When you find one you like, you can download a wallpaper swatch of it and also select the specific colors it uses to look at more palettes that use those same ones.
ColourLovers is my go-to for when I’m having trouble coming up with a color scheme! It’s also been around for over a decade, so there’s plenty to browse through.
No sex please, we’re online
It’s not just Tumblr, people. This shit is getting ridiculous.
Of course it’s not Tumblr! They came for Craigslist personals first because that’s the oldest trick in the book: Sneakily taking down the ‘perverts’ under the guise of vague, high morality goals and working slowly up from the bottom, picking off larger and larger targets. Few people cared about CL because of the stereotype of scary unwashed creeps trawling for sex online. That wasn’t so familiar or cute so it was fair game.
Tumblr is biting at the ‘artists’ heels and suddenly there is a bit more noise, because artists aren’t supposed to be treated like shit, are they? However even now the hair-splitting over what’s porn and therefore garbage and not-art shows that attitudes are not so different. It’s still the same divisive, dangerous us v.s. them mentality that is so easily exploited.
This is why when people tell me I shouldn’t worry about this because ‘my art isn’t porn anyway’ it makes me angry. It means so much more than drawings or a silly blog. This is about people being slowly phased out of their freedoms, rights and agency. History has shown time and time again that whenever power wants to make a crushing move backwards, it comes for what it declares ‘obscene’ first. People are raised to be scared and ignorant of sex so it’s an easy gateway. When they come cracking down on sex is when we most need to pay very close attention. They are not protecting us.
Five days to go until I find out-
- whether Tumblr decides on your behalf my blog to be morally acceptable content for you guys to see, or not.
Regardless of their choice, I likely will move from Tumblr to another service, and set up my own site. While my comics are SFW, I do not feel comfortable letting a company tell my fellow artists what kind of work they are allowed to share.
This whole thing smells bad to me. First they come for your female presenting nipples, next they come for your opinions, and then they will come for your private life, and at that point none of us are pure enough.
I can’t believe something this insane and extreme is actually happening. While Tumblr has the right to choose what their service is being used for, even beyond the letter of the law, being a private company, them just blatantly hurting so many people and their means to reach their followers and audience with zero regard just fills me with disgust.
Art is accompaniment to freedom, creativity is something that should never be chained, and all artists, even ones you might not see morally savory, contribute to growth and development of society in means more substantial than any political or ideological school. To silence artists and hide art from the public eye are the actions of a totalitarian powers whom fear the free minds. And they always use the same excuse of “protection, and safety” to justify their actions.
Protection from enemies they invent, safety from the fear they seed, reducing free people to mere infants to be penned and walked around handheld to their permitted actions.
Isn’t this how it always starts?

Why ‘female-presenting nipples’ matter
When I was 10, my mom made me wear a bra and it felt like a punishment for being different.
When I was 10, I took the bra off when changing for gymnastics and accidentally dropped it in the school hallway. A teacher picked it up and said, “Oh, this must belong to you” and handed it back to me in front of everyone. I quit gymnastics.
When I was 11, I thought maybe the boobs would be okay so long as they didn’t get any bigger than would fit in my hand, so I kept measuring it, but they did.
When I was 12, I started wearing two or three sports bras to smush them down, until one day a classmate said, “Are you wearing two bras?!” while laughing.
When I was 13, a boy told me he wanted to squeeze my boobs “until they popped.”
When I was 14, I got cast in a play as an older character and a classmate told me I got the role because I had boobs.
When I was 17, my mom told me to return a swimsuit because it would be too distracting for my boyfriend’s father.
When I was 21, I got properly fitted for a bra and everyone felt the need to tell me how much better my boobs looked.
When I was 26, I got pregnant and my immediate fear was that my boobs would get bigger.
When I was 28, I got shamed for trying to feed my screaming baby in public without a cover.
When I was 28, people asked me “why are you bothering to use a breastfeeding cover?”
When I was 30, people gave me weird looks that I wasn’t yelling at my kid for putting their hand on my boob.
When I was 31, I avoided going to the beach or pool because I didn’t want to have to deal with boobs in a swimsuit.
When I was 32, I got asked, again, “why don’t you get a breast reduction?”
When I was 33, I watched a 5yo girl get shamed for running around in sweltering heat without a shirt on and had to reprimand a bunch of tween boys who thought it was okay to shame her for doing something they do all the time.
When I was 34, my kid kept patting my breast and saying “Mommy’s squishy breast!!” They will never see me express any shame about tits, because I want them to have a different mindset than I had. Yes, boobs are nice! They’re squishy! They’re fun! That’s the end of that.
I’m 35 and no longer give a fuck. I don’t care anymore. As a teenager my tits were covered in stretch marks. They’ve been engorged with milk. My nipple changed shape with pregnancy. Give it another couple decades and my breasts will probably be all wrinkly. It’s sexual when I’m using it sexually. I don’t fucking care, and I won’t be ashamed anymore.
Every time a policy or cultural hangup treats people with breasts differently, it fucks us over.
Tumblr’s new policy makes an active choice to participate in this culture of shame. By classifying “female-presenting nipples” as explicit material, Tumblr has taken a stance that any chest or breast that differs from a male default is worthy of shame and unavoidably sexual. The idea that breasts are shameful and unavoidably sexual is exactly what fucked me up for so much of my life.
Stop shaming people for having bodies.
I’ve been seething in rage thinking of this all day and @aibidil put into words what was reeling in my mind.
Our bodies are not porn.
Having porn bots roaming around tumblr is not an excuse to ban adult content. Not everything that present naked bodies are considered pornographic, and I do hope that the Tumblr staff realizes that or else they will be losing a ton of users.
One of the reasons I feel so comfortable using Tumblr over other social media is because this site is clearly too incompetent to be evil.
The basic business model of a social network is to harvest commercially valuable personal data and sell it, most famously via targeted ads. Anyone visiting my blog can clearly see that I am a queer furry who’s into video games and art. And yet I am only served ads for funeral homes, Bible story DVDs, and the current president’s reelection campaign (in 2018 for some reason)
Needless to say my click through rate has not been very good
Me: Runs a blog dedicated to dungeons and dragons and anime Tumblr: You know what, you strike me as a sporty type
I’m a social media manager for my day job and Tumblr is literally the only social media platform I can relax on anymore because it’s so incompetent when it comes to exploiting my personal data.
The tumblr personal data algorithm, trying to make sense of the hot mess that is my blog:
Like honestly, I’m pretty sure the only “algorithm” involved is an evaluation of your region based on the IP address of your current browsing session – and I suspect this is not even stored for any kind of analysis, it just gets resolved at the moment the ad is served.
I live in a red state. Red states like Bible videos and Trump. I have seen no evidence of any further guesses taken to target me, let alone accurate ones. This social media platform used by millions has failed to be any better at targeting ads than the sites that host and aggregate screenshots of popular Tumblr posts to be shared on Facebook.
It would almost surely generate more revenue to just use an out-of-the-box advertisement product like you’d put on a Wordpress site. In fact, it’s embarrassing for a social media platform with such a large user base and cultural footprint to be unable to implement an ad network of its own that was at least effective enough that it could be supplemented via a partnership with some company whose business is advertising on the Internet. Like, (gee I don’t know) maybe Tumblr’s parent company Yahoo.
You might also expect to see more advertisements from big companies who benefit from lots of broadly untargeted marketing, like fast food chains, major retailers, new movies, and car insurance companies (who have a long tradition of spamming web banner ads). Instead we basically only get the weird shifty types of ads that you might expect to see on a torrent host or hentai site.
None of these are more viable options for Tumblr. afaik the highest revenue out-of-the-box advertising products forbid use on NSFW sites, and Tumblr has always enabled NSFW content. (It’d be so gauche too, but really what about this site isn’t?) Tumblr’s user experience has never been good enough for people to pressure other sites into implementing the same kinds of infrastructure that Facebook, Twitter, and Google use to track individual users’ browsing habits.
Tumblr does have systems in place to analyze related-blog and related-post graphs with reasonable accuracy, so I would think they could at least use that – but apparently they can’t figure out how to pair nodes to ads. Like, maybe if they had a decent system that could search text in posts for keywords, but given the uselessness of the search function this is not likely. But… they have searchable tags that people use… those are ready-made keywords…. I just I don’t know.
Partnerships with large companies are pretty unlikely too, even with Yahoo, especially now. In the last few years (since the YouTube incident), major brands have become extremely careful about what internet content they associate themselves with. iirc, that was around the time that Tumblr began advertising, so that might have just been unlucky timing. NSFW meant chances were slim before, but now there is no way in hell Walmart or Coca-Cola are going to advertise on Tumblr “our official app got pulled from the Play Store because, among other things, we never did anything about all the cold pizza we’re hosting” dot hellsite dot com.
This whole aspect is honestly strange to me. This seems like the one thing that staff would actually be motivated to do well. I don’t imagine this site has ever been remotely profitable, and its countless glaring technical inefficiencies suggest that it is in fact orders of magnitude more expensive per user than these ads could possibly generate. Its continued existence is a testament to investors imagining it’s worth something, and its inability to do the thing that social networks do to make money makes that really dubious. They shut down Vine for the same reason in only four years.
Probably the only reason this site is worth millions is because so many people keep using it for some reason, despite (or because of) its absolute inability to website. Tumblr has been growing unsustainably in content and cultural relevance since the beginning, and that apparently has been fueling an investment bubble. So congratulations, we’ve created this keeling garbage barge. When it tanks, it will tank hard. We can consider it direct action.
wow even when I wrote that I did not expect it to happen so fast
