Story board done for my stop motion.

Continuing to focus on the idea of separation and the feeling of frustration that is associated with tangles. To convey these feelings I’ve personified the wire. Two faces visible among the tangles desperatly straining to get away from each other, with their facial expressions bursting with emotion.

It was then suggested to me to see what it was like to project the personified wires silhouette onto the wall using a light. I decided to see how it would look and while it seems a bit of a fuzzy projection, I believe it gives the sculpture a great deal more of expression and intensity.

Created stop motions using my wire based on tangles and the strain of sperating them. I felt this could pave the way for more ideas, such as force or the frustration that is associated with the idea of tangles.

While brainstorming where I could go with my feather duster and cotton wool, I tried to think about the similarities they share. The most interesting one that came to mind was their countless amount of little tangles that make up their textures. I decided to look at what else possesses this and how I could focus on the nature of tangles. I came to the conclusion that wire was the best idea as I could tangle it myself and play around with it in different ways.

For day 2 of the sculpture electives, we made stop motion aminations using the objects we collected for yesterday. I found it enjoyable bringing inanimate objects to life and creating a story.

Interesting first day of the sculpture electives. We started with a variety of random objects and did everything with them from organizing them based on size, colour and function, to combining them and finding connections between them. A lot of the day was spend analyzing the objects by their shape and space they take up etc as well as trying different ways of correlating them with other objects to create many different bizarre looking pieces.

I’ve been adjusting it quite a bit the past few days so I can now say I’m fully happy and satisfied with my layout.

Printed my hand/monument photos onto photograph paper for display. Tried to adjust them as best I could from what I remembered during my tumblr workshop exercise of the “mini exhibition” as I’ve previously posted about focusing on the skills of curating.

Completed my painting inspired by Surrealism. Quite happy with how it turned out.The paint covered pallet turned out to look quite interesting too.

Some zooming may be needed for the images but here is my completed work of my balloon projections printed onto photograph paper. Very happy with the results.

By using low down angles I was about to create a series of photos where my fathers hand looks monumental. I am using this to represent how I viewed my father in early life. To me his hands were far bigger than they actually were and I decided to play with this idea by making a little sign reading “dad”, emphasizing the hands (exaggerated) size by comparison.

Progression on the painting. I painted the dollhouse window in black and white and it ended up looking like stone or some sort of monument which I like as I believe it complements the open landscape. Barney the sun is also off colour as I wanted to use burning colours to give the feeling of heat.

Happy with the results so far.

I enjoyed the Tumblr workshop as it informed me about the importance of professionalism on Tumblr as it is basically an online portfolio. It also allowed me to look at my work in different ways through the mini exhibition exercise. To create my mini exhibition I took photos of my works close up and from different perspectives focusing on different textures and patterns. I then printed out a select few to put on display. During this I was told to focus on the flow of the visuals and aesthetics, and I found it very helpful in terms of displaying and curating work.

Starting with the background, I felt better painting over my plan and instead keeping an mental note of it so I can make the background flow more instead of having to paint around awkward different shapes. I took inspiration from the small collection of Surrealist paintings as seen above. While I’d prefer to be painting with oils as the Surrealist tended to do, I’m using acrylic because I bought many high quality colours at the start of the year that I want to use. I have oils at home but most of the colours have run out and I want as much colour options as possible. Happy with the results so far.

Really want to do painting for my discipline next year but funnily enough I haven’t done a single painting this semester, having been preoccupied with “exploring and stepping out of my comfort zone” as instructed by my tutors. I love Surrealism and as it focuses on the mind and the subconscious, I felt I could connect that with my theme of memory. I’ve been looking at the surrealists Dali and Magritte as they’re styles are my favourite and their works have inspired me to have a go at doing my own surrealist painting, using the familiar imagery I’ve gathered and been working with this semester.
