One last thing I wanted to do before we finishe this brief was to actually try the ransom lettering physically. I did so much of it on the computer I wanted to try it out for myself. I was throwing out a load of old books I had and I cut letters from them. I enjoyed the process definitely will do it again in a more creative way but I just wanted to do something quickly with it tonight.
Elective Discipline Brief - Pattern Workshop (January 202)
The shape and colour I received was rhombus and baby pink. I played with some ideas of colour combinations and pattern layouts. We didn’t really have much time to think to hard about it but I think that made it more interesting because all of our designs were very different and unique.
ELECTIVE DISCIPLINE BRIEF - Logo Design (January 2020)
I was given Thai cuisine to make a logo for, so I did some research on Thailand and many aspects of Thai culture.
I did a lot of quick thumbnails but I began to become mainly fascinated by Thai dancing and the way they used their hands/fingers so I began to make more detailed thumbnails of that.
I decided to base the logo on the orchid flower because Inthought the shape of the flower would be very interesting to simplify down into a sleek modern logo.
This is the final logo I ended up with. I really like how it turned out as it is very simple and sleek, and has a very sensible feel to it.
Photography Brief: Everyday Things - Day 5
At work today, I was hoovering and thought that the design of the top of the hoover was quite interesting. There is a lot of concentric circle action going on. I think the graphics, the reflections of the lights and all the random scratches and patches make the image so detailed which I think is fascinating, how unique it is, that it would look completely different from any oft her angle.
This next picture is a magnet frame that I broke while doing the last typography brief. I accidentally hit it off of the fridge when I was trying to make letters out of all the magnets😔 I didn’t tell my mom and it’s been sitting(hiding) on my windowsill and will stay there until I’m bothered to hot glue it back together!!
Photography Brief: Everyday Things - Day 4
Today I focused on things high above me that feel gREATER than me and out of my reach. I first captured the ceiling of my work. I love the repeated parallel lines ad the symmetrical patterns of the structures that give the beams support? I don’t even know what those are I think with all the shadows the picture has a great sense of depth
Then on my way home, I saw these GIANT telephone poles. I love the composition of this picture as it really makes use of again symmetry and negative space. I also think it’s interesting that the perspective of the image makes the poles look WAY smaller than they really are.
Photography Brief: Eveyday Things - Day 3
Today I wanted to focus on nature because it really isn’t something we are experiencing a lot of these days as we’ve been forced inside.
For the first picture, I captured a piece of nature that we can have indoors. I think orchids are truly STUNNING like how did something like that evolve, what is the evolutionary purpose of that weird middle bit? I really like the moody lighting contrasting against the bright background. This effect with the blinds and blurred outside kind of creates a trapped feeling.
I decided to actually go outside (within 2km I PROMISE) and got this picture taken from the underside of a tree. I think this lockdown experience is really making me appreciate and respect the UNFATHOMABLE vastness of the natural world’s power which includes both the virus AND all the greenery in the world AND the sun AND US! This picture to me shows both the life that is the all of the trees and the creator, the sun working together harmoniously to continue CREATING more LIFE. stunning
In my boredom, I decided to make one final concert poster because I enjoyed doing the last ones so much. This one is for the Chromatica Ball that Lady Gaga was supposed to perform this summer. All of the dates are probably going to be cancelled/postponed so HOPEFULLY that means I can with some luck attend one somehow. I incorporated the ransom lettering again because I think that it is so fun and interesting to play with the colour combinations and composition of them. The style of the only music video to have come out for Chromatica so far is very retro future so I think that compliments the very 70′s/80′s style of the punk posters that inspired me. I love the diversity in the lettering of all the posters. It all looks so free, handmade and scrapbook-like which is what I tried to achieve. Photography Brief: Everyday Things - Day 2
My first image is of my clear quartz crystal which is cut into a wand shape. I especially love this crystal due to the fact the way light refracts through it. Sometimes I just hold it up to my eye and view the world through her 😫😫 But ANYWAYS, I used small torch and shone it through the crystal and got this picture. I upped the saturation completely and edited the lighting a little bit and I found it so interesting to find all these different colours that were hidden in the picture. STUNNING
My next picture is of the new white candle I got for meditation. I think a new candle always looks so satisfying with a perfect barely melted top. I also just love how peaceful the flame looks, burning alone in the darkness. I definitely love high contrast between light and dark and also the use of negative space. I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about spirituality and pondering the universe during this quarantine so both of these pictures definitely relate to my current daily life.
Photography Brief: Everyday Things - Day 1
The first image I chose was from today at work. It’s of my spray bottle filled with some disinfectant, sanitising, coronavirus KILLER! I placed it alone in the creepy service lift as to me it kind of captures the ominous unknowing sense of this whole pandemic situation alongside the isolation we all are feeling. kinda deep...
This next picture is of orange peels that I displayed on a dinner plate. I have been absolutely ADDICTED to oranges during this situation. It’s been my daily routine to eat like two or three of them right when I come home from work. I played with the rounded reflective quality of the plate which I thought turned out really well in terms of adding some interesting composition.
I found these images on Pinterest of found objects being used to create typefaces, words or just patterns. I think this goes to show that the variety of the types of lettering that can be creating using actual objects is ENDLESS! I love the abstraction in the bottom left image where the letters are kind of difficult to make out. The objects used in the top left image really match the energy of the word they make, alongside the curly fairy tale lettering used which is an example of how effective these custom object fonts can be in conveying a concept.
These are my two finished typefaces.
I like the messiness of the first one that was caused by NOT BEING ABLE TO PLACE THE WIRES WHERE I WANT THEM! The charger cables were slightly thicc so they kind of just did what they wanted. I had to sometimes wrap two wires around eachother to achieve enough stiffness that they would hold in place. I also think the random USB and microUSB plugs and bundles of wire that are dotted around the letters make it look quite interesting.
I had the opposite struggle with my second typeface when it comes to the fact that I had sometimes too much control over the shapes of the letters. Any time I accidentally knocked the sheet the letters would completely dismantle and I had to be so gentle with my placement because the toilet rolls were so light. I really liked the challenge of trying to create curves in interesting ways. I especially like the way I did the ‘B’. I enjoyed playing with different thicknesses in the letters and I think it overall turned out well.
I’m deciding to go with the toilet rolls because although it’s hard to get curved shapes, I think the blocky effect is quite interesting
Some of my tests for my second typeface. I’ve tried to take some inspiration from the whole quarantine and social distancing situation for both of my typefaces.
The idea for the toast and the fridge magnets is based on the fact that I BEEN EATIN (a lot)!! and I know my friends have too. It seems we eat when bored I guess...
I’ve also been spending a lot of time in my garden and that’s where my inspiration for the leaf letters came from.
The used toilets rolls is a THROWBACK to when people were panic buying toilet rolls for no reason 😍😍the good old days
My mom has bought so many disposable gloves for when she goes shopping so I tried those too.

I made a few concert posters inspired by punk posters for the singer MARINA (fka Marina and the Diamonds). I did one for each of her album tours because it gave me the opportunity to play with different aesthetics as each one of her albums have a very distinct sound and the album eras are also very different visually when it comes to the album/single covers, tours, music videos and photo shoots.

My posters are definitely quite different than the ones that inspired me, but that was my whole point. To take inspiration but at the same time infuse the aesthetic of MARINA.

I’ve decided to make more concert posters inspired by those of the punk era for my favourite artists. I wanted to incorporate the handwritten aesthetic onto some of them and I’m aiming for that rough and rugged look of punk and played around with different ways to achieve that and also ways of how NOT to achieve that. I think the bleed pen is very effective because it makes it look as though it’s a real marker bleeding through slightly into the paper. STUN! I honestly just thought that this screen of writing that I had made using Procreate looked interesting so HERE YOU GO!! 😍😍😍
