Experimental time lapse
Unfortunately this isn’t the finished product as I’m having trouble with my laptop abs viewing the file so this is the first half of what the time lapse should look like.
Also excuse my shaky hands trying to record.

Trying out monoprinting!
This was my first time ever doing monoprint and I love it. It’s such a direct way of printing and a great way to layer aswell.
I first printed the wood grain from an old floorboard and then did a loose sketch based off of one of the photos I took as part of my series and mono printed that over it.
I’d love to try this technique again and make it more refined as this was more of a practice run.
Movement Statement
I really struggled at first to come up with a concept as I was in quarantine and found it really hard to get inspiration or motivation. But then I thought I could use that to my advantage. I had to restrict my movements for four weeks altogether and I was confined within the walls of my bedroom. So instead of focusing on movement, I focused on lack of it.
My whole project is based around the inside of my room as I didn’t really have much choice and I knew I would have primary sources to work with so I just got over the hump of it not being the most original idea and tried to make it as personal as possible. I knew this was probably going to be quite a popular theme throughout the course so I really had to trust myself and stick with it.
My aim was to make this project like a sort of diary of my experiences during these challenging times. I wanted to show the polar opposite of what you see on social media around lock down and quarantine so I steered clear away from banana bread, home workouts and the rest of the cliches. Instead I kept it very raw and unfiltered and showed the side that we don’t particularly see.
This was probably one of the hardest projects I’ve done as my theme was obviously lack of movement yet I wanted the art I made to have movement to them. It was also quite hard to motivate myself and looking at the same four walls for four weeks doesn’t exactly stimulate much inspiration or creativity but I worked with what I had at hand and used only materials and subjects from my room to challenge myself.
I’m quite happy with the project overall considering the conditions.
In one of the workshops for photography we were shown some artists who made work while in prison. This really caught my attention because I could sort of relate to it in a way. While restricting my movements and self isolating in my room I felt trapped. It was as if I was a prisoner locked inside those 4 walls. My room was usually my place that I would go to when I wanted a break from my loud busy house but now it was the complete opposite.
Here are some artists that inspire me that made art while serving time in prison.
This is a self portrait by Ronnie Goodman who did time for burglary at Sam Quentin state prison. I love the way he captures a space and a feeling within it. Also the fact he is in a print room and that is one of my electives spoke to me as I immediately recognised some of the equipment.
This piece was created by Gilberto Rivera and titled “an institutional nightmare”. He created this piece after an hour nvohnter with a prison guard and it looks as if this was his way of letting off steam. This speak spoke to me as it reminded me one of my photographs I took of my pile of clothes lying on the floor. At first glance you just see a bunch of jumbled up material but when you read more into it you can understand the story behind it. This is something that I aspire to do in my work also.

Here is my pillow made out of modelling clay.
I did about 5 of these but was unsuccessful every time and couldn’t achieve the look I was going for. This one was the only one I was happy with.
I used a plastic bag to imprint onto the surface of the clay to recreate the folds and creases in the fabric.
I chose a pillow as most of my time restricting my movements and confined to my bedroom was spent in bed. I flock the way that the folds of the pillow are the marks you left behind after you’ve been laying there and although the piece itself has lots of movement and lines and creases to it the concept behind it is static.

My response to the work of Tracy Emmin.
I used a leftover piece of clay that was at the bottom of my box of art things in my room. I didn’t have much to work with so I had to make it quite small scale.
This is my piece based off of the photograph I took of my bed in my room while I was quarantined and restricting my movelments while trying to do college online.
This is a more simplified version simply because I didn’t have any more clay so I just added in the parts I thought were most important.
I would love to add to this in the future or maybe even doing it again on a larger scale as I really enjoyed trying to replicate different surfaces and textures in clay.

Ceramics task.
We were asked to design a mug/cup and a plate that relates to the theme of our project.
I could be sculptural or functional and there were really no limits on what we could and couldn’t do.
Here’s mine!

Finished Lino print!
I took one of my photos that I thought symbolised lack of movement and decided to turn it into a Lino print as I think the lines and shapes work quite well for it.
This particular piece is of the inside of my wardrobe with my nice clothes and jackets hanging up. The kind of clothes I haven’t worn in over a year now because of restrictions. Clothes are a big part of my life they bring me so much happiness so not being able to wear them is one of the worst things about this whole scenario.

Another idea for a ceramic piece.
I think it would be a nice idea to make a pillow from my bed, seeing as that’s where I was most of my time spent isolating. The pillow represents lack of movement yet I want the piece itself to have lots of movement and folds of fabric to it so that it contrasts with its theme.

“ A Moment of Insanity”
I decided to document me cutting my hair. I really don’t think anybody has their normal hair left after lock down and to be honest I’m surprised I’ve lasted this long without touching it.
Its so normal now to just cut your hair yourself at home with the kitchen scissors following along with some amateur on youtube. I guess for some its a coping mechanism, a way to change something they actually have control over. For me, honestly I just thought it needed a trim.
I’m not completely sure why but I keep finding myself being drawn to black and white in this project. I suppose things right now feel a bit dull and gloomy so grey tones probably suit it the best.
I didn’t set up my room or tidy it up or anything, neither did I dress myself up as I’ve said before I don’t want to glamorize things I want them as unfiltered as possible.
So here is me in clothes that could probably do with changing, sitting in my room, taking some time for myself. I didn’t really plan it out or think about what I wanted to do I just decided it would be nice to do something I could change and if it didn’t work it will just grow back. Plus who was going to see me anyways.
I just set my camera up on a tripod behind me and angled it so it wouldn’t be seen in the mirror and set it on a timer.

Pattern making using my stamps I made from Suzannas workshop.
I used the cardboard stamp to create a pattern that resembles floorboards.
I thought it had dried but when I opened my sketchbook this morning it had transferred onto a previous page.
I actually love the side it printed onto by accident with the colours from my room underneath.

Studies of materials found in my room that would be interesting to imitate in clay.
They include my scrunched up bed sheets, a wicker basket and my curtains.

Quick sketch based off the photos I took of my bed inspired by Tracey Emin.
I will use this to create my model in clay. Since I’m doing it in quite a small scale I won’t be able to add as much detail as I would like but hopefully it will still turn out okay.

Time lapse set up!
I got up at about half 7 and set up my camera and tripod. I tried to catch the sunset but there wasnt really a sunrise it just got brighter. I am going to leave it on until about half 5 today or until the sun sets.
I set the shutter speed to automatic so it started off really slow and it’s getting faster as it gets brighter and it will slow down again as it gets darker so that I don’t have to keep changing it. It’s taking a photo every 60 seconds. In the end I will have 630 photos and about 25 seconds of footage.
I should have maybe started a little earlier this morning as it was already getting bright at that time and I wanted to have it on a continuous loop so that it flowed more seamlessly but this is my first try so we’ll see how it turns out.

Stamp making and printing onto different surfaces.
I searched my bedroom for any materials that I could use to make some stamp making tools out of and unfortunately this was all I could find. It consists of some cardboard, padding from an old bra and a cork that was on a jar.
The padding didn’t actually work and I couldn’t really carve into it so i just used the cork and cardboard.
I carved a wood like texture into the surface of the cardboard to replicate my floor boards in my room and I carved some curved lines into the cork that were meant to resemble creased fabric but didn’t really come out as I anticipated.
I printed them with Lino ink that I luckily had with me under my bed and I printed them onto some various surfaces using some more found objects from my room
I used a variety of papers from shoe boxes and parcels, bubble wrap, some sketchbook paper and a cut up face mask.

Colour study of my bedroom.
I’ll use this across all three disciplines just to help with my colour palette for any pieces I want to add colour to.
